In diffraction catastrophes such as the rainbow the wave nature of light resolves ray singularities and draws delicate interference patterns. In quantum catastrophes such as the black hole the quantum nature of light resolves wave singularities and creates characteristic quantum effects related to Hawking radiation. The paper describes the theory behind a recent proposal [U. Leonhardt, arXiv:physics/0111058, Nature (in press)] to generate a quantum catastrophe of slow light.

Traditional attitude control design of reusable launch vehicles involves independent design of autopilot and control allocation modules [SBB99], [SK97], [SHJ00], [PS00], [Hod00]. Unfortunately, this results in the potential for overly aggressive commands in the autopilot resulting in a loss of performance due to actuator saturation, particularly if the autopilot may suffer from integrator wind-up [HH01].

While semisimple artinian rings and semisimple coalgebras over a field can be described in terms of matrices (either matrix ring over division rings or comatrix coalgebras over the ground field), semisimple corings seem to have a more intrincated structure in general. It turns out that some well-known properties of semisimple rings or coalgebras, which are immediately deduced from the aforementioned structure, are not evident over a (left) semi-simple coring. For instance, it is not evident...

Nucleation in the two-dimensional q-state Potts model has been studied by means of Monte-Carlo simulations using the heat-bath dynamics. The initial metastable state has been prepared by magnetic quench of the ordered low-temperature phase. The magnetic field dependence of the nucleation time has been measured as the function of the magnetic field for different q and lattice sizes at T=0.5 Tc. A size-dependent crossover from the coalescence to nucleation region is observed at all q. The...

We investigated the pinning of flux lines in a superconducting film by a regular array of magnetic antidots. The sample consists of a Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in which a regular pattern of submicron holes is introduced and which is covered by a type-II superconducting Pb film. The resulting ferromagnetic/superconducting heterostructure shows a pronounced asymmetric magnetization curve with respect to the field polarity. This asymmetry clearly demonstrates that the...

It is argued that the derivative expansion is a suitable method to deal with finite temperature field theory, if it is restricted to spatial derivatives only. Using this method, a simple and direct calculation is presented for the radiatively induced Chern-Simons--like piece of the effective action of (2+1)-dimensional fermions at finite temperature coupled to external gauge fields. The gauge fields are not assumed to be subjected to special constraints, and in particular, they are not required...

We suggest that quantum mechanics and gravity are intimately related. In particular, we investigate the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the case of two free particles and show that the quantum potential, which is attractive, may generate the gravitational potential. The investigation, related to the formulation of quantum mechanics based on the equivalence postulate, is based on the analysis of the reduced action. A consequence of this approach is that the quantum potential is always...

We describe the BOOMERanG experiment and its main result, i.e. the measurement of the large scale curvature of the Universe. BOOMERanG is a balloon-borne microwave telescope with sensitive cryogenic detectors. BOOMERanG has measured the angular distribution of the Cosmic Microwave Background on $\sim 3%$ of the sky, with a resolution of $\sim 10$ arcmin and a sensitivity of $\sim 20 \mu K$ per pixel. The resulting image is dominated by hot and cold spots with rms fluctuations $\sim 80 \mu K$...

A common proper motion survey of M dwarf stars within 8 pc of the Sun reveals no new stellar or brown dwarf companions at wide separations (~100-1400 AU). This survey tests whether the brown dwarf ``desert'' extends to large separations around M dwarf stars and further explores the census of the solar neighborhood. The sample includes 66 stars north of -30 degrees and within 8 pc of the Sun. Existing first epoch images are compared to new J-band images of the same fields an average of 7 years...

In order to separate electronic and phonon mechanisms of thermal transport in high temperature superconducting Bi2212, we measured thermal conductivity of single crystals of Y-doped Bi2212, an insulating analogue of pure Bi2212, in the temperature range between 40 mK and 2 K. Temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of insulating samples changes from T$^{1.7}$ between 1 and 2 K to $T^{2.6}$ below 200 mK, indicating saturation of the phonon mean free path with decreasing temperature....

Wigner's quasi-probability distribution function in phase-space is a special (Weyl) representation of the density matrix. It has been useful in describing quantum transport in quantum optics; nuclear physics; decoherence (eg, quantum computing); quantum chaos; "Welcher Weg" discussions; semiclassical limits. It is also of importance in signal processing. Nevertheless, a remarkable aspect of its internal logic, pioneered by Moyal, has only emerged in the last quarter-century: It...

Analytic results for the conductance of a molecular wire attached to mesoscopic tubule leads are obtained. They permit to study linear transport in presence of low dimensional leads in the whole range of parameters. In particular contact effects can be addressed in detail. By focusing on the specificity of the lead-wire contact, we show that the geometry of this hybrid system supports a mechanism of channel selection, which is a distinctive hallmark of the mesoscopic nature of the electrodes.

We present a short review of the recent 5D self-tuning solution of the cosmological constant problem with $1/H^2$ term, and present the dual description of the solution. In the dual description, we show that the presence of the coupling of the dual field($\sigma$) to the brane(which is a bit different from the original theory) maintains the self-tuning property.

We present highly time resolved circular-polarization and flux spectra of the magnetic white dwarf LP790-29 taken with the VLT UT1 in order to test the hypothesis that LP790-29 is a fast rotator with a period of the order of seconds to minutes. Due to low time resolution of former observations this might have been overlooked -- leading to the conclusion that LP790-29 has a rotational period of over 100 years. The optical spectrum exhibits one prominent absorption feature with minima at about...

We report the measurement by the MACRO experiment of the ratio of double muon events over single muon events as a function of rock depth. Particular attention has been devoted to the analysis of high zenith angle events. Results are compared to the expectation of a detailed simulation performed with HEMAS-DPM Monte Carlo. No deviations with respect to ``standard physics'' predictions have been found.

Research on accelerator driven systems (ADS), related new fuels and their ability for nuclear waste incineration has led to a revival of interest in nuclear cross sections of many nuclides over a large energy range. Discrepancies observed between nuclear data bases require new measurements in several cases. A complete measurement of such cross sections including resonance resolution consists of an extensive beam time experiment associated to a long process of analysis ans validation. With a...

This short note was born out of discussions on anyons in the FQHE at the YITP workshop "Fundamental problems of quantum field theories" (December 19-21, 2001, YITP, Kyoto). At that time, I felt that there might not be a sound consensus of opinion on the subject. Now, I would like to show my understanding here, the essential part of which is based on hep-th/0110197. The first problem discussed is a notion of ``bosonized electrons (bosonization)", which are unphysical objects from...

Magnetic edge states are responsible for various phenomena of magneto-transport. Their importance is due to the fact that, unlike the bulk of the eigenstates in a magnetic system, they carry electric current along the boundary of a confined domain. Edge states can exist both as interior (quantum dot) and exterior (anti-dot) states. In the present report we develop a consistent and practical spectral theory for the edge states encountered in magnetic billiards. It provides an objective...

I discuss how measurements of the absorption of $\gamma$-rays from GeV to TeV energies via pair production on the extragalactic background light (EBL) can probe important issues in galaxy formation. We use semi-analytic models (SAMs) of galaxy formation, based on the flat LCDM hierarchical structure formation scenario with $\Omega_m=0.3$ and Hubble parameter $h=0.65$, to obtain predictions of the EBL from 0.1 to 1000$\mu$m. SAMs incorporate simplified physical treatments of the key processes of...
