A population of neurons typically exhibits a broad diversity of responses to sensory inputs. The intuitive notion of functional classification is that cells can be clustered so that most of the diversity is captured in the identity of the clusters rather than by individuals within clusters. We show how this intuition can be made precise using information theory, without any need to introduce a metric on the space of stimuli or responses. Applied to the retinal ganglion cells of the salamander,...

Although the concept of a quantum phase transition has been known since the nineteen seventies, their importance as a source of radical transformation in metallic properties has only recently been appreciated. A quantum critical point forms an essential singularity in the phase diagram of correlated matter. We discus new insights into the nature of this phenomenon recently gained from experiments in heavy electron materials.

We determine the leading low-energy fall-off of the integrated density of states of a magnetic Schroedinger operator with repulsive Poissonian random potential in case its single impurity potential has a slow anisotropic decay at infinity. This so-called magnetic Lifshits tail is shown to coincide with the one of the corresponding classical integrated density of states.

In a previous paper [Homology cylinders: an enlargement of the mapping class group, Algebr. Geom. Topol. 1 (2001) 243--270, arXiv:math.GT/0010247], a group H_g of homology cylinders over the oriented surface of genus g is defined. A filtration of H_g is defined, using the Goussarov-Habiro notion of finite-type. It is erroneously claimed that this filtration essentially coincides with the relative weight filtration. The present note corrects this error and studies the actual relation between the...

In this talk we summarize main results of a recent determination of the polarized deeply inelastic parton distributions to NLO from the world data. In the analysis the LO and NLO parton densities and their $1\sigma$ statistical errors were derived and parameterized. The strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ is determined $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.113 \pm 0.004 {\rm (stat.)} \pm~0.004 {\rm (fac.)} +0.008/-0.005 {\rm (ren.)}$ Comparisons of the low moments of the parton densities with recent...

In this talk we discuss the cosmic singularity. We motivate the need to correct general relativity in the study of singularities, and mention the kind of corrections provided by string theory. We review how string theory resolves time-like singularities with two examples. Then, a simple toy model with lightlike singularities is presented, and studied in classical string theory. It turns out that classical string theory cannot resolve these singularities, and therefore better understanding of...

We construct models of triaxial galactic nuclei containing central black holes using the method of orbital superposition, then verify their stability by advancing N-body realizations of the models forward in time. We assume a power-law form for the stellar density, rho ~ 1/r and 1/r^2; these correspond approximately to the nuclear density profiles of bright and faint galaxies respectively. Equidensity surfaces are ellipsoids with fixed axis ratios. The central black hole is represented by a...

The research project explores specific meta-dialogue behaviors in terms of both how a system could be made to perform them, and to what extent they can increase overall system performance. We focus on two types of meta-dialogue capabilities: ability to detect and recover from anomalous dialogue patterns in simple exchanges, and on-line extensions or changes to working vocabulary. Our main method involves detailed representation of the dialogue context, separating domain, language, and dialogue...

This project develops and tests a new approach for improving the effectiveness of personnel selection and classification decisions There are three main data characteristics that cause difficulty for existing classification methods: (1) unbalanced group sizes, (2) unequal misclassification costs, and (3) non-normal data Preliminary research suggests a hybrid method incorporating data envelopment analysis (DEA) and linear programming discriminant analysis (DEA/DA) is effective in this difficult...

When atoms interact with a phase-modulated field, the probability of finding the atom in the excited-state oscillates at the second harmonic of the modulation frequency, 2 omega(sub m). The amplitude of this oscillating probability is a resonant function of the Rabi frequency Omega, and this is termed a beta Rabi resonance. In this work, we examine the line shape of the beta Rabi-resonance both theoretically and experimentally. We find that a small- signal theory of the beta-Rabi-resonance...

Jimmy Twilight's Lonesome Lounge was a radio show which aired on CFUV 101.9 FM in Victoria, B.C. Canada from 10PM to 1AM. The show featured musical selections by the host, James Tuohy, largely from his personal vinyl collection. Programming for each episode was eclectic, but often thematic. A typical playlist would include Wesley Willis, Hank Williams Sr., French pop music, and various folk weirdos all punctuated by organ covers of Rolling Stones songs or crooner lounge. Jimmy would often...

We conduct a systematic search for a viable string/M-theory cosmology, focusing on cosmologies that include an era of slow-roll inflation, after which the moduli are stabilized and the Universe is in a state with an acceptably small cosmological constant. We observe that the duality relations between different cosmological backgrounds of string/M-theory moduli space are greatly simplified, and that this simplification leads to a truncated moduli space within which possible cosmological...

Extensive muon spin relaxation measurements have been performed to determine the magnetic field penetration depth in high-Tc cuprate superconductors with simple hole doping, Zn-doping, overdoping, and formation of static SDW nano islands. System dependence of $n_{s}/m^{*}$ (superconducting carrier density / effective mass) reveals universal correlations between Tc and $n_{s}/m^{*}$ in all these cases with / without perturbation. We consider an application of variational-wavelet approach to nonlinear collective models of beam/plasma physics: Vlasov/Boltzmann-like reduction from general BBGKY hierachy. We obtain fast convergent multiresolution representations for solutions which allow to consider polynomial and rational type of nonlinearities. The solutions are represented via the multiscale decomposition in nonlinear high-localized eigenmodes (waveletons).

It is believed that superselection rules in quantum mechanics can restrict the possible operation on a qbit. If this was true, the model used by Mayers for the impossibility of bit commitment and by Kitaev for the impossibility of coin flipping would be inadequate. We explain why this is not the case. We show that a charge superselection rule implies no restriction on the operations that can be executed on any individual qbit.

The security of two-state quantum key distribution against individual attack is estimated when the channel has losses and noises. We assume that Alice and Bob use two nonorthogonal single-photon polarization states. To make our analysis simple, we propose a modified B92 protocol in which Alice and Bob make use of inconclusive results and Bob performs a kind of symmetrization of received states. Using this protocol, Alice and Bob can estimate Eve's information gain as a function of a few...

A time-dependent Casimir-Polder force is shown to arise during the time evolution of a partially dressed two-level atom. The partially dressed atom is obtained by a rapid change of an atomic parameter such as its transition frequency, due to the action of some external agent. The electromagnetic field fluctuations around the atom, averaged over the solid angle for simplicity, are calculated as a function of time, and it is shown that the interaction energy with a second atom yields a dynamical...
