We study Calabi-Yau manifolds constructed as double covers of ${\mathbb P}^3$ branched along an octic surface. We give a list of 85 examples corresponding to arrangements of eight planes defined over ${\mathbb Q}$. The Hodge numbers are computed for all examples. There are 7 rigid Calabi-Yau manifolds and 14 families with $h^{1,2}=1$. The modularity conjecture is verified for all the rigid examples.

Extending a computation which appeared recently in hep-th/0301173, we compute the transmission and reflection coefficients for massless uncharged scalars and gravitational waves scattered by d>=4 Schwarzschild or d=4 Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, in the limit of large imaginary frequencies. The transmission coefficient has an interpretation as the "greybody factor" which determines the spectrum of Hawking radiation. The result has an interesting structure and we speculate that it...

In 1841, Delaunay constructed the embedded surfaces of revolution with constant mean curvature (CMC); these unduloids have genus zero and are now known to be the only embedded CMC surfaces with two ends and finite genus. Here, we construct the complete family of embedded CMC surfaces with three ends and genus zero; they are classified using their asymptotic necksizes. We work in a class slightly more general than embedded surfaces, namely immersed surfaces which bound an immersed...

How would you feel about having your face scanned and compared against your military identification card when entering a base? How about submitting your fingerprint before entering an airport security area and boarding a plane? Facial scans and fingerprinting are just two examples of biometrics, the automated use of physiological or behavioral characteristics to determine or verify identity, that can reduce fraud and identity theft to dramatically improve physical security. Today, biometric...

We perform a global fit to the inclusive structure function considering a QCD inspired model describing the ep scattering. In lines of a two Pomeron approach, the structure function F_2 has a hard piece given by the model and the remaining soft contributions: the soft Pomeron and non-singlet content. We have investigated several choices for the soft Pomeron and its implication in the data description. In particular, we carefully estimated the relative role of the hard and the soft contributions...

It is shown that the steady unidirectional flow with vanishing heat flux considered by B. C. Eu [Phys. Rev. E 65, 031202 (2002)], and earlier by Uribe and Garcia--Colin [Phys. Rev. E 60, 4052 (1999)], is inconsistent with the exact conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy. The inconsistency does not lie in the assumed symmetry properties of the flow but in the stationarity assumption. The unsteady problem is considered and its solution from the Boltzmann equation for Maxwell molecules is...

In the presence of both spin-orbit scattering and a magnetic field the conductance of a chaotic GaAs quantum dot displays quite a rich behavior. Using a Hamiltonian derived by Aleiner and Falko [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 256801 (2001)] we calculate the weak localization correction and the covariance of the conductance, as a function of parallel and perpendicular magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling strength. We also show how the combination of an in-plane magnetic field and spin-orbit scattering...

It is shown that for a certain class of Yang-Baxter maps (or set-theoretical solutions to the quantum Yang-Baxter equation) the Lax representation can be derived straight from the map itself. A similar phenomenon for 3D consistent equations on quad-graphs has been recently discovered by A. Bobenko and one of the authors, and by F. Nijhoff.

Transverse self-interactions within a "line" bunch of electrons moving in an arc of a circle have been studied extensively by us from an electrodynamical viewpoint. Here we treat an electron bunch with a given vertical (i.e. perpendicular to the orbital plane) size by a generalization of our previous work to the case of a test particle with vertical displacement interacting with a line bunch. In fact, since a bunch with vertical extent can always be thought of as a superposition of...

he Humane Environment (THE) comprises, among other things, a productive editor for quickly creating drafts of documents with a minimum of effort and hassle. It drastically cuts down on the number of keystrokes and mouse moves it takes to do editing tasks compared with GUI editors such as Word or AppleWorks. In this environment, mouse moves are used only when doing graphic operations such as resizing a window or working on a drawing or photo. After you've become familiar with the Humane...

Entanglement sharing among sites of one-particle states is considered using the measure of concurrence. These are the simplest in an hierarchy of number-specific states of many qubits and corresponds to ``one-magnon'' states of spins. We study the effects of onsite potentials that are both integrable and nonintegrable. In the integrable case we point to a metal-insulator transition that reflects on the way entanglement is shared. In the nonintegrable case the average entanglement content...

We present molecular dynamics simulations of the homogeneous (mechanical) melting transition of a bcc metal, vanadium. We study both the nominally perfect crystal as well as one that includes point defects. According to the Born criterion, a solid cannot be expanded above a critical volume, at which a 'rigidity catastrophe' occurs. This catastrophe is caused by the vanishing of the elastic shear modulus. We found that this critical volume is independent of the route by which it is reached...

We have studied the optical properties of metallic nanoparticles with arbitrary shape. We performed theoretical calculations of the absorption, extinction and scattering efficiencies, which can be directly compared with experiments, using the Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA). In this work, the main features in the optical spectra have been investigated depending of the geometry and size of the nanoparticles. The origin of the optical spectra are discussed in terms of the size, shape and...

Highly reflective dust was blowing from the northeast over Lake Chad (green splash at bottom of image) on April 9, 2003. Frequent dust storms are just one of the many factors slowly eating away at this prime source of freshwater for people, animals and plants in (counterclockwise from top left) Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad. Increasing demand for irrigation is draining the lake, and blowing sand and desert dust are creating sand dunes that are encroaching on the vegetation along the...

Particle physics has for some time made extensive use of extended field configuations such as solitons, instantons, and sphalerons. However, no direct use has yet been made of the quite extensive literature on ``localized wave'' configurations developed by the engineering, optics, and mathematics communities. In this article I will exhibit a particularly simple ``physical wavelet'' -- it is a Lorentz covariant classical field configuration that lives in physical Minkowski space. The field is...
