We study Calabi-Yau manifolds constructed as double covers of ${\mathbb P}^3$ branched along an octic surface. We give a list of 85 examples corresponding to arrangements of eight planes defined over ${\mathbb Q}$. The Hodge numbers are computed for all examples. There are 7 rigid Calabi-Yau manifolds and 14 families with $h^{1,2}=1$. The modularity conjecture is verified for all the rigid examples.

Extending a computation which appeared recently in hep-th/0301173, we compute the transmission and reflection coefficients for massless uncharged scalars and gravitational waves scattered by d>=4 Schwarzschild or d=4 Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, in the limit of large imaginary frequencies. We present molecular dynamics simulations of the homogeneous (mechanical) melting transition of a bcc metal, vanadium. We study both the nominally perfect crystal as well as one that includes point defects. According to the Born criterion, a solid cannot be expanded above a critical volume, at which a 'rigidity catastrophe' occurs.
