Given a non-hermitean matrix M, the structure of its minimal polynomial encodes whether M is diagonalizable or not. This note will explain how to determine the minimal polynomial of a matrix without going through its characteristic polynomial. The approach is applied to a quantum mechanical particle moving in a square well under the influence of a piece-wise constant PT-symmetric potential. Upon discretizing the configuration space, the system is decribed by a matrix of dimension three. It...

Chris Piuma, Charlotte Wells, Jake Anderson and Chris Calvert phone it in from Portland, OR. They may have once described themselves as a 'writerly' band, so picture a bunch of drunk grad students singing karaoke to Mountain Goats songs. Anyway, one of my faves. Yes, faves. "The Minor Thirds are sweet and sour sauce. They are agitated and relaxed, confident and insecure, weary and excited to see you. Their smile shines, like a knife. They are ambitious homebodies. I will present a General Linear Camera (GLC) model that unifies many previous camera models into a single representation. The GLC model describes all perspective (pinhole), orthographic, and many multiperspective (including pushbroom and two-slit) cameras, as well as epipolar plane images. It also includes three new, previously unexplored, multiperspective linear cameras. The GLC model is both general and linear in the sense that, given any vector space where rays are represented as points, it...

We study numerically the behavior of continuous-time quantum walks over networks which are topologically equivalent to square lattices. On short time scales, when placing the initial excitation at a corner of the network, we observe a fast, directed transport through the network to the opposite corner. This transport is not ballistic in nature, but rather produced by quantum mechanical interference. In the long time limit, certain walks show an asymmetric limiting probability distribution; this...

Photon counting induces an effective nonlinear optical phase shift on certain states derived by linear optics from single photons. Although this no nlinearity is nondeterministic, it is sufficient in principle to allow scalable linear optics quantum computation (LOQC). The most obvious way to encode a qubit optically is as a superposition of the vacuum and a single photon in one mode -- so-called "single-rail" logic. Until now this approach was thought to be prohibitively expensive...

The six-vertex F model on the square lattice constitutes the unique example of an exactly solved model exhibiting an infinite-order phase transition of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type. As one of the few non-trivial exactly solved models, it provides a welcome gauge for new numerical simulation methods and scaling techniques. In view of the notorious problems of clearly resolving the Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario in the two-dimensional XY model numerically, the F model in particular constitutes an...

A detailed analysis of dynamics of cosmological models based on $R^{n}$ gravity is presented. We show that the cosmological equations can be written as a first order autonomous system and analyzed using the standard techniques of dynamical system theory. In absence of perfect fluid matter, we find exact solutions whose behavior and stability are analyzed in terms of the values of the parameter $n$. When matter is introduced, the nature of the (non-minimal) coupling between matter and higher...

Using mean-field theory, we illustrate the long-range Coulomb effect on the antiferromagnetism in the electron-doped cuprates. Because of the Coulomb exchange effect, the magnitude of the effective next nearest neighbor hopping parameter increases appreciably with increasing the electron doping concentration, raising the frustration to the antiferromagnetic ordering. The Fermi surface evolution in the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ and the doping dependence of the onset...

These notes grew out of several introductory talks I gave during the years 2003--2005 on motivic integration. They give a short but thorough introduction to the flavor of motivic integration which nowadays goes by the name of geometric motivic integration. As an illustration of the theory some applications to birational geometry are also included.

A highly parallel simulation software capable of modeling complex systems at the mesoscale was developed and tested. The scaling of the simulation computer code, called TANTALUS, was found to be excellent, due to the novel spatial decomposition algorithm that was developed. TANTALUS was employed to examine a number of complex systems as demonstration projects.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, heightened Congressional and public interest in federal spending for homeland security. Funding for that purpose is divided among more than 200 appropriation accounts within the federal budget and involves many different functional areas of the government. Much of the funding resides within accounts that primarily finance programs not classified as homeland security activities. That accounting arrangement makes it difficult for budget analysts to...

We have studied the statistical mechanics of money circulation in a closed economic system. An explicit statistical formulation of the circulation velocity of money is presented for the first time by introducing the concept of holding time of money. The result indicates that the velocity is governed by behavior patterns of economic agents. Computer simulations have been carried out in order to demonstrate the shape of the holding time distribution. We find that, money circulation is a Poisson...

In this note is presented a method, given nodal values on multidimensional nonconforming spectral elements, for calculating global Fourier-series coefficients. This method is ``exact'' in that given the approximation inherent in the spectral-element method (SEM), no further approximation is introduced that exceeds computer round-off error. The method is very useful when the SEM has yielded an adaptive-mesh representation of a spatial function whose global Fourier spectrum must be examined,...

We demonstrate that flow of longitudinal unpolarized current through a ballistic two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling will induce nonequilibrium spin accumulation which has opposite sign for the two lateral edges and it is, therefore, the principal observable signature of the spin Hall effect in two-probe semiconductor nanostructures. The magnitude of its out-of-plane component is gradually diminished by static disorder, while it can be enhanced by an in-plane transverse...

The H.E.S.S. collaboration recently performed the accurate measurements of the gamma-ray spectra above 200 GeV for two BL Lac-type AGN in the Southern sky: PKS 2155-304 and PKS 2005-489. The TeV spectrum of the BL Lac object 1ES 2344+514 has also been recently measured by the Whipple collaboration. Using the results of phenomenological calculations of the SED of the EBL we have extracted the intrinsic gamma-ray spectra of these blazars. Consequently we have shown that these spectra can be...

We present evidence for cosmic ray acceleration at the forward shock in Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR) from three X-ray observables: (1) the proximity of the contact discontinuity to the forward shock, or blast wave, (2) the morphology of the emission from the rim of Tycho, and (3) the spectral nature of the rim emission. We determine the locations of the blast wave (BW), contact discontinuity (CD), and reverse shock (RS) around the rim of Tycho's supernova remnant using a principal component...

The candidates were selected from the SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) DA white dwarf stars with Teff obtained from the optical spectra fit, inside the ZZ Ceti instability strip. Considering these stars are multi-periodic pulsators and the pulsations propagate to the nucleus of the star, they carry information on the structure of the star and evolution of the...

We analyse visual observations of the pulsations of the red giant variable L2 Pup. The data cover 77 years between 1927 and 2005, thus providing an extensive empirical base for characterizing properties of the oscillations. The power spectrum of the light curve shows a single mode resolved into multiple peaks under a narrow envelope. We argue that this results from stochastic excitation, as seen in solar oscillations. The random fluctuations in phase also support this idea. A comparison with X...

We discuss the question of recurrence for persistent, or Newtonian, random walks in Z^2, i.e., random walks whose transition probabilities depend both on the walker's position and incoming direction. We use results by Toth and Schmidt-Conze to prove recurrence for a large class of such processes, including all "invertible" walks in elliptic random environments. Furthermore, rewriting our Newtonian walks as ordinary random walks in a suitable graph, we gain a better idea of the...

Starting from generic bilinear Hamiltonians, constructed by covariant vector, bivector or tensor fields, it is possible to derive a general symplectic structure which leads to holonomic and anholonomic formulations of Hamilton equations of motion directly related to a hydrodynamic picture. This feature is gauge free and it seems a deep link common to all interactions, electromagnetism and gravity included. This scheme could lead toward a full canonical quantization.

The task before us in Iraq has never been an easy one. Renewing Iraq's economy after decades of Saddam's totalitarian rule would have been a challenge even in the most peaceful of conditions. With the insurgency, it has proven near impossible. The security, political, and economic situations in Iraq today must be seen as part of an integrated whole. Improving Iraq's economy will not drive success by itself, but it is essential to making progress. Fewer choices remain today because of missed...

We report measurements and analysis of the specific heat and magnetocaloric effect at the phase boundary into the single magnetic field-induced phase (phase II) of U(Ru{0.96}Rh{0.04})2Si2, which yield striking similarities to the valence transition of Yb{1-x}YxInCu4. To explain these similarities, we propose a bootstrap mechanism by which a structural distortion causes an electric quadrupolar order parameter within phase II to become coupled to the 5f-electron hybridization, giving rise to a...

We reexamine here the issue of consistency of minimal action formulation with the minimal coupling procedure (MCP) in spaces with torsion. In Riemann-Cartan spaces, it is known that a proper use of the MCP requires that the trace of the torsion tensor be a gradient, $T_\mu=\partial_\mu\theta$, and that the modified volume element $\tau_\theta = e^\theta \sqrt{g} dx^1\wedge...\wedge dx^n $ be used in the action formulation of a physical model. We rederive this result here under considerably...
