In the present work, ternary Special Quasirandom Structures (SQSs) for a fcc solid solution phase are generated at different compositions, $x_A=x_B=x_C=\tfrac{1}{3}$ and $x_A=\tfrac{1}{2}$, $x_B=x_C=\tfrac{1}{4}$, whose correlation functions are satisfactorily close to those of a random fcc solution. The generated SQSs are used to calculate the mixing enthalpy of the fcc phase in the Ca-Sr-Yb system. It is observed that first-principles calculations of all the binary and ternary SQSs in the...

James states in 4:9 that we are to be wretched, weep, and mourn. Here in this section James states something similar for the rich. However, in this section James gives the declaration that the rich are going to mourn because of the judgment that is coming upon them. If we are those who are to […]

Previous research has shown a strong correlation of protein folding rates to the native state geometry, yet a complete explanation for this dependence is still lacking. Here we study the rate-geometry relationship with a simple statistical physics model, and focus on two classes of model geometries, representing ideal parallel and antiparallel structures. We find that the logarithm of the rate shows an almost perfect linear correlation with the "absolute contact order", but the slope...

We study the 0.57 keV (O VII triplet) and 0.65 keV (O VIII) diffuse emission generated by charge transfer collisions between solar wind (SW) oxygen ions and interstellar H and He neutral atoms in the inner Heliosphere. These lines which dominate the 0.3-1.0 keV energy interval are also produced by hot gas in the galactic halo (GH) and possibly the Local Interstellar Bubble (LB). We developed a time-dependent model of the SW Charge-Exchange (SWCX) X-ray emission, based on the localization of the...

In order to determine the chemical freeze-out parameters of the hadron-emitting source in relativistic heavy ion collisions some studies in literature perform fits by using as data input a subsample of ratios calculated out of experimentally measured hadron yields instead of yields themselves. We show that this is a statistically incorrect method fit, implying a bias in the extracted parameters.

We consider the effect of asymmetric temporal delays in a system of two coupled Hopfield neurons. For couplings of opposite signs, a limit cycle emerges via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation when the sum of the delays reaches a critical value. We show that the angular frequency of the limit cycle is independent of an asymmetry in the delays. However, the delay asymmetry determines the phase difference between the periodic activities of the two components. Specifically, when the connection with...

Twelve years after the discovery of the Top quark, the CDF detector has collected large samples of tt-bar events with integrated luminosities up to 1-1.7 fb^-1, where we are able to probe our knowledge of the Standard Model Top quark. This article will focuss on those analysis results dedicated to find new physics in the Top quark production: measurement of relative fractions of Top pair production mechanisms, searches for a massive resonant state decaying to tt-bar pairs as well as a heavy...

Building on and from the work of Brydges and Imbrie, we give an elementary calculation of the volume of the space of branched polymers of order $n$ in the plane and in 3-space. Our development reveals some more general identities, and allows exact random sampling. In particular we show that a random 3-dimensional branched polymer of order $n$ has diameter of order $\sqrt{n}$.

Since the first demonstration of negative refractive index using nested or edge coupled split ring resonators and posts, various proposals have been made for improvement of the structures. Loss is an ongoing concern for these media at microwave frequencies and above. One alternate design uses broadside coupled split rings printed front to back on a substrate. This approach, which avoids bianisotropic effects of edge coupled rings, has been demonstrated successfully inside waveguide below...

It is known that the defining relations of the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra osp(1|2n) are equivalent to the defining (triple) relations of n pairs of paraboson operators $b^\pm_i$. In particular, with the usual star conditions, this implies that the ``parabosons of order p'' correspond to a unitary irreducible (infinite-dimensional) lowest weight representation V(p) of osp(1|2n). Apart from the simple cases p=1 or n=1, these representations had never been constructed due to computational...

Planetary topography can either be modeled as a load supported by the lithosphere, or as a dynamical effect due to lithospheric flexure caused by mantle convection. In both cases the response of the lithosphere to external forces can be calculated with the theory of thin elastic plates or shells. On one-plate planets the spherical geometry of the lithospheric shell plays an important role in the flexure mechanism. So far the equations governing the deformations and stresses of a spherical shell...

We present a complete calculation of the QCD and SUSY-QCD corrections to neutralino pair annihilation into bottom quark-antiquark pairs through exchange of a pseudoscalar Higgs boson, which is the dominant process in the cosmological A-funnel region of the mSUGRA model. We present numerical predictions for the annihilation cross section and discuss the influence of the correction terms on the cold dark matter relic density with respect to recent cosmological data.

We present a general method based on nonlinear response theory to obtain effective interactions between ions in an electron gas which can also be applied to other systems where an adiabatic separation of time-scales is possible. Nonlinear contributions to the interatomic potential are expressed in terms of physically meaningful quantities, giving insight in the physical properties of the system. The method is applied to various test cases and is found to improve the standard linear and...
