The DREStector concept should enable in situ assessment of the quantity and location of steel present or determination of the absence of steel in a target. When used in conjunction with field engineering skills, the device should assist the military engineer to rapidly identify and/or prepare a structural concrete target for explosive demolition. Other potential applications might include use as a training aid for target recognition and construction engineering uses.

Under Phase I, the TecSec team focused on applying information centric security in a commercial medical and healthcare scenario. Use cases showed the utilization of a portable electronic device (PED) to assure information resident on the PED. However, the platform is not well protected as information is moved along from the host PED to its final destination. As governed by laws (i.e., Healthcare Information Portability and Accountability Act or HIPAA), medical information must be assured of its...

A soldier wearing complete field equipment along with a weapon showing the stress of carrying so much weight. He or she has to climb up and down mountains, cross scorching hot deserts and go through swamps and bushes with thorns to rip up a uniform and the flesh beneath it! After 20 to 30 years, his or her pains will stay with them the remainder of their existence and trip to and from V,A, hospitals.

The long term goal is development and utilization of a suite of laser based particle imaging systems as part of a comprehesive marine particle analysis system. The system is designed with wide dynamic range, thus, it will ultimately be used for high speed, high resolution characterization of water column particle fields in high, medium and low latitudes. Such a system will have broad application to areas of defense and environmental interests such as ecological modeling efforts (e.g....

Seventeen families attempted to build seven types of earth-covered expedient fallout shelters while guided only by one-page shelter-building instructions prepared by DCPA. Within 48 hours of starting, all but one family succeeded in building a shelter affording good fallout protection. Families spent an average of 88 minutes trying to interpret their one page of instructions. The abbreviated DCPA instructions for building an expedient shelter-ventilating pump -- essential for the multiday...

This project allowed students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Ohio State University to compete in the AFRL University Challenge Project. These yearly projects provided an invaluable experience for our capstone students. Approximately 90 design students contributed to the conceptual design of the projects for the first 2 years. Students benefited from understanding the problem, developing innovative concepts and proposing detailed solutions. Smaller teams of students...

Portable, ruggedized computers, capable of administering standard automated tests under harsh environmental conditions, have been needed by researchers for many years. Particularly, military psychologists require tools which will permit the testing of soldiers during operationally-relevant field exercises without problems of equipment malfunctions. In 1984, the U.S. Army Research and Development Command sought to address this requirement by sponsoring a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR)...

The sophisticated electronic devices and sensors that give our dismounted warriors an edge on the battlefield also make them prodigious consumers of energy. Helmet-mounted displays, night-vision devices, image intensifiers, satellite radios, computers, laser range finders, global positioning systems, robots, and autonomous vehicles - all these technologies are straining the ability of ground combat personnel to carry adequate power sources to operate them.

The crampon, developed by the US Army Land Warfare Laboratory, was designed to fit a range of ski and vapor barrier boots used by the US Army. The crampon is lightweight, durable and provides the user with required foot stability to safely cross ice fields. The feasibility of designing and fabricating an adjustable crampon has demonstrated.

Impregnite, Shoe, M1: This material is a paste prepared from Ester gum, Neats-foot oil, paraffin wax and solvent. It is issued to the field in cylindrical cans which contain the proper amount of impregnite for a single pair of shoes. The application of the subject material on the inside and outside of a pair of shoes will provide several hours protection against liquid vesicants.

Since the implementation of distributed operations with a higher density of tactical field radios, optics and electrical tactical equipment, the demand for batteries has increased significantly. While advances in technology have increased the lethality of Department of Defense (DoD) forces, sustainment and increased resupply convoys have increased the risk of logistical support and costs. This thesis examines the viability, cost savings, and operational weight associated with the use of...

Mobile Subscriber Equipment (MSE) is a tactical communications system which provides mobile field radio, telephone, and record traffic for the U.S. Army at corps and division levels. This system went from contract award to materiel fielding in a period of less than two and a half years through the utilization of nondevelopmental item (NDI) acquisition. The accelerated acquisition cycle presented many challenges to the successful deployment of this tactical communications system. This thesis...

The US Army Land Warfare Laboratory (LWL) developed an experimental heat tablet of acetal resin for heating combat rations. To use this new fuel source efficiently and provide a support for the ration can or canteen to be heated, the LWL grid was developed. Field evaluations of the grid were generally favorable, although some comments by the users indicated the standoff height of one inch was too much. A decision was made to modify the grid and reduce the standoff height from one inch to one...

An experimental model of a field reader to be used to interpret a combined neutron/gamma thermoluminescent dosimeter for military personnel has been designed and constructed. This instrument can operate from the 24-V battery of a military vehicle and can read dose to personnel in the range of 1 to 1000 rads. Satisfactory operation has been demonstrated and it has been shown no serious limitations on the accuracy of the dosimetry measurements are introduced by the reader. (Author)

The feasibility of biosynthesis for the production of fuels for Army use in a theater of operations (TO) was investigated. Production of fuels in a TO has the potential for alleviating the logistic burden of both intra- and inter theater movements. The technical feasibility of biosynthesis for the production of hydrocarrbon and alcohol fuels has long been established. Hydrocarbons and alcohol are produced indirectly by anaerobic breakdown of organic matter. Liquid methane and ethyl alcohol are...

Self-recovery anchor capstan kits were developed for the M151 and M35 military tactical wheeled vehicles. The kits consist of wheel-adaptors, wheel capstans, plastic fiber rope, and earth anchor. The kits are employed, in lieu of conventional vehicle winches, to recover the immobilized vehicle. The kits have these advantages: They are simple and thus likely to be available in working condition when needed; application of towing forces is lower and will usually have an upward component which...

Levels of bacteremia associated with common bacterial pathogens in adults and children may be less than 1 CFU per ml (3,6). The use of a low volume of blood for a blood culture is known to reduce the detection of bacteremia in adults (5). In an effort to understand how bacterial concentration could contribute clinically significant capabilities to PCR detection systems, blood culture techniques provide relevant information. Tenney et al have shown that 7 ml blood samples resulted in 29 % more...

For the first time, the circular pipeline as a means to significantly improve the throughput achieved in the search for bent functions is presented in this thesis. Linear cryptanalysis attack is a threat to modern symmetric encryption systems. A good defense is the use of a primitive based on Boolean functions having the highest nonlinearity possible-a bent function. Bent functions are extremely rare and, therefore, difficult to find. The implementation of a sieve on a field programmable gate...

The Marine Corps requires a food service system that can be housed, for portability, within the 8 by 8 by 20 foot shelters of the Marine Corps Expeditionary Shelter System. This food service system is intended for use aboard container ships when such ships are used for troops transport. After the troops disembark, the food service unit will be used for base camp feeding. This report contains a design concept for such a food service system.
