The objective of this thesis was to further the development of a personal position tracking system using MARG sensors. This work advanced the method by which distance and heading were calculated of an individual wearing one MARG sensor on his/her foot when moving about under normal walking conditions. Data was collected from the foot-mounted sensor while walking a straight-line path, a square path, and climbing stairs. The corresponding data from these activities was then used in a Matlab...

Two methods of estimating the attitude position of a spacecraft are examined in this thesis: the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and the unscented Kalman filter (UKF). In particular, the UnScented QUaternion Estimator (USQUE) derived from [4] is implemented into a spacecraft model. For generalizations about the each of the filters, a simple problem is initially solved. These solutions display typical characteristics of each filter type. The UKF is very attractive in spacecraft attitude estimation,...

The Vee-Trough/Evacuated Tube Collector (VTETC) was analyzed rigorously and various mathematical models were developed to calculate the optical performance of the vee-trough concentrators, and the quasi-steady state thermal performance of the evacuated tube receivers. Tests were run to verify the mathematical analyses. Back-silvered glass mirror, Alzak, Aluminized Teflon, and Kinglux (electropolished aluminum reflectors) were tested. Additional tests were run at temperatures ranging from 80 to...

The NPSAT1 project is a Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) educational small satellite combining student education in satellite systems and operations, institutional research, and sponsored experiments with the objective of testing technologies for applications in space flight. The micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) rate sensor is one of these experimental technologies. Packaging three of these MEMS sensors together makes a 3-axis rate sensor suite. The MEMS experiment was originally conceived...

The primary objectives of the Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS)-5 Pathfinder Project were the following: (1) to evaluate GMS-5 data for sources of error and develop methods for minimizing any such errors in GMS-5 data; (2) to prepare a GMS-5 Pathfinder data set for the GMS-5 Pathfinder Benchmark Period (1 July 95 - 30 June 96); and (3) show the usefulness of the improved Pathfinder data set in at least one geophysical application. All objectives were met.

The Liquid Motion Experiment (LME), designed to study the effects of liquid motion in rotating tanks, was flown on STS 84. LME was essentially a spin table that created a realistic nutation motion of scale-model tanks containing liquid. TWo spherical and two cylindrical transparent tanks were tested simultaneously, and three sets of such tanks were employed to vary liquid viscosity, fill level, and propellant management device (PMD) design. All the tanks were approximately 4.5 inches diameter....

The goal of this program was to identify applications for which the unique properties of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) diamond magnetometer gives a significant advantage. Most of the effort concentrated on improving the sensitivity of a single NV to the level where it could be used to detect a single nuclear spin at a distance of 10 nm. Scanning NV nanoprobe development was also explored and significant progress was made.

MSLAP is a software for analyzing spectra, providing the basic structure to identify spectral features, to make quantitative measurements of this features, and to store the measurements for convenient access. MSLAP can be used to measure not only the zeroth moment (equivalent width) of a profile, but also the first and second moments. Optical depths and the corresponding column densities across the profile can be measured as well for sufficiently high resolution data. The software was developed...

THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE CONCENTRATION PRODUCTS AND TEMPERATURE IS DISCUSSED IN THE COMBUSTION OF MIXED GASES. IT IS SHOWN THAT IN THE SIMPLEST CONDITIONS THESE CONCENTRATIONS AND TEMPERATURE AT THE SURFACE OF A FLAME ARE THE SAME AS IN THE COMBUSTION OF PREVIOUSLY PREPARED STOICHIOMETRIC MIXTURES OF THE SAME GASES. A POSSIBLE LIMIT WAS FOUND TO THE INTENSIFICATION OF COMBUSTION OF UNMIXED GASES, DEPENDING UPON THE LIMITING RATE OF THE CHEMICAL REACTION. IN ORDER OF MAGNITUDE, THIS LIMIT IS...

The NASA Charging Analyzer Program (NASCAP) computer code is a three dimensional finite element charging code designed to analyze spacecraft charging in the magnetosphere. Because of the characteristics of this problem, NASCAP can use an quasi-static approach to provide a spacecraft designer with an understanding of how a specific spacecraft will interact with a geomagnetic substorm. The results of the simulation can help designers evaluate the probability and location of arc discharges of...

We batch fabricated gyroscope cells with a yield exceeding 85percent and achieved (129)Xe T2 time of 300 sec and (3)He T2 time of 3.9 hours in a 2 mm cell. We developed techniques to supress (87)Rb spin-exchange relaxation, (129)Xe back-polarization, and (3)He dipolar magnetic field. In a 10 mm cell we achieved Angle Random Walk (AFR) of 0.025 deg/hour(1/2), bias drift of less than 0.01 deg/hour, and absolute bias of...

This paper describes an update of the Space Telecommunications Radio System (STRS) open architecture for NASA space based radios. The STRS architecture has been defined as a framework for the design, development, operation and upgrade of space based software defined radios, where processing resources are constrained. The architecture has been updated based upon reviews by NASA missions, radio providers, and component vendors. The STRS Standard prescribes the architectural relationship between...

The DREStector concept should enable in situ assessment of the quantity and location of steel present or determination of the absence of steel in a target. When used in conjunction with field engineering skills, the device should assist the military engineer to rapidly identify and/or prepare a structural concrete target for explosive demolition. Other potential applications might include use as a training aid for target recognition and construction engineering uses.

Our objective was to build, test, and characterize a diver-held ferrous metal detector array with real-time processing algorithms that accurately determines the position, depth, and size of magnetic anomalies from unexploded ordnance (UXO). This was accomplished by using an array of low power, miniature, total field atomic magnetometers, with a new miniaturized electronics design using a novel digital approach. We achieved order of magnitude reductions in the size and power consumption of total...

We investigated the feasibility of a femto-Tesla level scalar atomic magnetometer operating in Earths field. Our approach is unique in using multi-pass alkali-metal cells, quantum-non-demolition measurements, and suppression of spin-exchange relaxation to achieve the highest sensitivity per unit volume. We developed a new multi-pass cell geometry with a small internal volume and experimentally verified the predictions of our model for quantum spin noise. We also investigated the availability of...

The preliminary results of the study of several high resolution spectrograms (lambda 3500 - lambda 7000 A), obtained at the Haute Provence Observatory (OHP) in France, at different epochs before, during and after the eclipse are reported. Some of these spectrograms are compared with corresponding IUE high resolution observations, in order to study the effects of the intrinsic UV activity, towards the longer wavelengths.
