An overview and functional description of an editor for host files using Direct View Storage Tubes (DVST) with enhanced refresh capabilities is given. Tekedit is an editor designed to augment a system editor for creating or modifying host files using a graphics terminal as the display device. The initial implementation of Tekedit is for a Tektronix 4114 on an IBM 4341 running VM/CMS.

The objective of this study was to develop a systematic procedure for pinpointing areas for future funding requests aimed at improving production methods. The approach taken was to describe current manufacturing processes in terms of the functions they performed, thus allowing assessment of costs without reference to the methods employed. Such 'technology-independent' assessment allowed cost comparison both within and among end items, thereby highlighting the high-cost functions.

Although process planning is more of an art than a science today, its automation is both possible and feasible. Variant computer aided systems exist and can be applied now. These systems should not have a great effect upon organizational structure. Generalized generative process planning does not exist and probably will not in the near future. However, several special purpose generative systems are available in experimental form. The capabilities of these systems must be planned during the...

This report details the engineering design, development and application of equipment to produce step threads (constant lead thread on two or more diameters) on the breechblock of cannon. The equipment uses a blade type tool with the part being threaded through shaper type cuts until finish size is reached. The use of this equipment will reduce the floor to floor time from 7.5 hours to 2.0 hours while producing better thread finishes and more accurate dimensional sizes.

Most of the earlier results for residual stresses are based on the assumption of elastic unloading. In this report, the prediction of residual stresses for the case of reverse yielding including the combined Baushinger and hardening effect will be reported for an autofrettaged thick-walled cylinder. The Bauschinger effect factor is varying as a function of overstrain. The strain-hardening effect is considered with different parameters used for loading and unloading process. The new results...

Several series of fracture toughness measurements were made in 4340 type steels, using both the standard K(Ic) test method and the J(Ic) test method described by Landes and Begley. K(Ic) results and J(Ic) results converted to K(Ic) units are nearly identical for a given steel over a range of specimen size. The fracture toughness of steels produced by vacuum-degassing, remelt, and airmelt processes are compared over a range of yield stress. Simplified J(Ic) test procedures are suggested for use...

A recommended practice for preparation and evaluation of steel specimens for automatic inclusion assessment was developed. The polishing procedure involved the use of diamond abrasives on rotating paper laps. This technique preserved the true morphology of the non-metallic inclusions. Evaluation of a properly prepared sample was accomplished using the sensitive tint condition of Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy.

The effect of the area of interconnection between the ends of fast-acting bearings such as those of recoil mechanisms used with American tank guns was studied with an apparatus which simulated a concentric recoil system. It was studied with an apparatus which simulated a concentric recoil system. It was found that these bearings do not starve with a small interconnection area, but a larger area would probably produce a faster-acting bearing. It would also result in a thinner fluid film but this...

This report reviews two new recoil systems as possible replacements for the conventional mechanisms currently in use on medium and large size cannon. One uses compressible fluid to dissipate energy in viscous friction and store elastic energy for counter recoil. The other uses coulomb or dry friction for dissipation of the recoil energy.

The transit time for passage of longitudinal and shear ultrasonic waves through polycrystalline depleted uranium - .78 weight percent titanium (Ti) alloy was determined as a function of pressure in a hydrostatic medium. Specimens of two thicknesses were used in order to eliminate bond-transducer effects from transit time determinations. The longitudinal velocity vL increases 3.5 percent from one atmosphere to a value of 3.48 km/sec at 1.6 GPa; the shear velocity vs increases 5 percent to 2.08...

The effects of a water, oil and 400 F salt quench upon mechanical properties and microstructure of a 2-in. thick block of gun steel were studied. The 400 F salt quench was found to be the mildest quenchant. The water and oil quenching effects were compared to the empirical predictions of Grossman with good qualitative agreement.

Many ductile metals in intimate contact with thin coatings of low melting solid metal which exhibit liquid metal embrittlement, also manifest severe embrittlement when tested at temperatures below the melting point of the coating. A significant decrease in stress, strain, and reduction-in-area occurs at fracture. Fracture propagates fast, but at a rate which is one or two orders of magnitude slower than that in liquid metal environments. Fracture occurs by brittle intergranular or...

The effect of interrupted current (IC) plating on the visual crack morphology, crystallography, and residual stresses of electrodeposited chromium has been investigated. Varying the process parameters such as the on/off plating cycle and current density resulted in changing the crystallographic fiber texture of the deposit from the conventional 111 orientation to a combination of 211, 111, and a small fraction of randomly oriented crystallites. Under these plating conditions, it was also found...

When an otherwise homogeneous material under stress contains small defects (i.e., internal cracks and/or voids), the stresses at parts of the material-defect interface significantly exceed the ones anticipated at that location in the absence of such irregularities. Consequently, a structural member, otherwise calculated to safely sustain the applied loads, might unpredictably fail. That branch of engineering which intends to account for such 'stress-raisers' is known as fracture mechanics....

Gun erosion is a complicated process which involves a number of interrelated factors. There is general agreement that erosion is a function of bore temperature but this does not eliminate controversy about its causes or the relative importance of different factors. The three effects involved in gun erosion are thermal, chemical, and mechanical. In the case of the most important erosion, that of steel bores at the origin-of-rifling, the chief factor is probably thermal. However, no matter what...
