Analyses of Instructor Pilot functions in training pilots using simulation were performed. The functions were based on the review of current simulation training conducted in the Phase I study NAVTRAEQUIPCEN 75-C-0093-1 (AD-A023 546). Feasible allocations of functions were made and modular implementation concepts developed.

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the institutional framework of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the implementation and enforcement of nonpoint source (NPS) pollution control measures in the state's urbanizing areas. The institutional framework is developed primarily around the existing governmental framework. The federal, state and local roles are examined in terms of the relevant legislative and executive NPS control activities already taking place. The judicial function is considered...

Firing tests were conducted to determine the effects on the stability and control characteristics of the AH-1G helicopter caused by firing the twin XM-134 minigun 7.62 machine guns in the XM-28 chin turret. Firing the two XM-134 miniguns in the XM-28 turret does not cause any objectionable aircraft reactions which would restrict the flight envelope. The deficiencies and shortcomings detected during this test are discussed.

The MPL 60 Model 10,000 filter is a six-channel integrated circuit electronic filter, adjustable over a frequency range from 1 Hz to 90 kHz. The passband gain is selectable, 0 or 20 db except in the x 10 kHz high pass mode. The filters are selectable high pass (HP) or low pass (LP), second order maximally flat Butterworth providing a skirt rolloff of 12 db per octave. The filters exhibit a high input impedance and a low output impedance with special output decoupling to handle highly capacitive...

The Architecture Machine Group has been developing an experimental information system which exploits the user's sense of spatiality to organize and access data. Conceptual roots lie in the observation that one can readily locate and retrieve some book from one's bookshelf, or the appointment calendar from one's desktop, on the basis of where it is, or where one put it, in a well- learned, familiar space. A prototype system has been developed that uses wall- sized, full color digital television...

Symbology to represent fixed-wing and rotary-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) was developed and compared to MIL-STD-1787C symbology. The symbology was evaluated in several simulated UAV operator tasks. In the first portion of the study, static screen-shots from a simulated UAV control station display screen were presented to participants. Participants were required to determine how many air vehicle symbols of a particular type or affiliation were present in the screen-shot. The results...

To be most efficient, an intelligent tutoring system must be based on a thorough analysis of the task that is being trained, and the knowledge, both declarative and procedural, that the learner must acquire in order to perform the task. This paper explores the thesis that constructing a cognitive simulation model of the task is an efficient approach to characterizing this content. Because the simulation model must be explicitly stated in order to carry out the task properly, the model acts as a...

This thesis research addresses the problem of mounting human entities to other non-human entities in the virtual environment. Previous human entities were exercised as individual entities in the virtual environment. Yet there are many applications (i.e. shipboard damage control, amphibious landings, helicopter vertical assaults) where human entities need to mount other vehicles within the virtual environment. The approach taken was to re-engineer the Naval Postgraduate School's Shiphandling...

Interfaces to military Virtual Reality (VR) systems, such as NPSNET IV.9, have been limited mainly to keyboard, mouse, and joystick devices. This presents two major problems; remembering how to access all the functionality of the system, and using the interface when the user is otherwise physically constrained. This can occur during the use of body-position tracking devices and Heads-Up-Displays (HUD). Voice recognition and Natural Language Processing (NLP) were used as a solution to both...
