We automated a visual physiology experiment that formerly was performed manually. The control of a light stimulus was synchronized with the collection of nerve cell response from kitten visual cortex, using Digital Equipment Corporation's MINC. The computer was integrated into several aspects of the experiment, ranging from data manipulation, storage, and histogramming, to the control of the stimulus sweep, orientation, speech, and duration. The computer also directed nerve spike output to a...

This document describes a VLSI design representation developed at USC as part of the USC Expert Synthesis System project. The data structure is implementation-independent and can be regarded as a general hardware design representation schema. It is characterized by four nonisomorphic hierarchies, which collectively describe the system under design. It is useful for the analytic detection of some kinds of design errors. (Author)

Very large sets of simultaneous linear equations can usually be solved to reasonable accuracy more quickly by an iterative method than by a direct one, but most iterative methods only converge if the elements of the principal diagonal of the coefficient matrix dominate all the other elements. This paper describes an iterative method which depends for its convergence only on domainance by the elements of an arbitrarily wide band of diagonals centred on the principal diagonal. The theory of the...

Problems associated with measuring randomness in the dynamic case of a generator continually producing binary digits are investigated. The mathematics of Bernoulli trials serves as the model against which the performance of the generator is compared. It is shown that there are a large number of ways in which a measuring system might be attempted. Such systems are based on explicit functions (called measure functions) of p; the probability that a one is generated.

The flow field for velocity and temperature is assumed to be made up of regions in which uniform flow of the primary and secondary fluids exist, and which diminish with axial distance from the ejector entrance. The velocity and temperature distributions in the mixed region are assumed to have cosine shaped profiles. The compatible solutions are given an...

The numerical analyst is not versed in VLSI design; the VLSI designer is not versed in algorithmic development. A primary implication of VLSI technology on the numerical analyst is locating the communication interface in order to optimize the talent of the numerical analyst and the VLSI designer. A viable alternative is to automate the algorithmic translation, accepting the inherent inefficiencies, and allow the numerical analyst full control of VLSI implementation. Regardless of the mechanism...

Numerous computational methods for generating and simulating binary and grey-level natural digital-image textures are proposed using a variety of stochastic models. Pictorial results of each method are given and various aspects of each approach are discussed. The quality of the natural texture simulations depends on the computation time for data collection, computation time for generation, and storage used in each process. In most cases, as computation time and data storage increase, the visual...

The design of a control system using the linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) control law theory for time invariant systems in conjunction with an incremental gradient procedure is presented. The incremental gradient technique reduces the full-state feedback controller design, generated by the LQR algorithm, to a realizable design. With a realizable controller, the feedback gains are based only on the available system outputs instead of being based on the full-state outputs. The design is for a...
