The thesis is on the instrumentation and in-situ measurement of vector electric fields at stratospheric height from National Balloon Facility, TIFR, Hyderabad on 14 December 2013. The presence of mV/m electric field at stratospheric heights is demonstrated. The diurnal and seasonal variation of AC part of global electric circuit (Schumann Resonances) is studied from the search coil magnetometer data installed in Antarctica for the year 2011.

Since the advent of meteorological satellites in the 1960's, numerous experiments have been conducted in order to evaluate the impact of these and other data on atmospheric analysis and prediction. Such studies have included both OSE'S and OSSE's. The OSE's were conducted to evaluate the impact of specific observations or classes of observations on analyses and forecasts. Such experiments have been performed for selected types of conventional data and for various satellite data sets as they...

This viewgraph document describes the data mining system developed at NASA Ames. Many NASA programs have large numbers (and types) of problem reports. These free text reports are written by a number of different people, thus the emphasis and wording vary considerably With so much data to sift through, analysts (subject experts) need help identifying any possible safety issues or concerns and help them confirm that they haven't missed important problems. Unsupervised clustering is the initial...

Child and Langmuir introduced a solution to space charge limited emission in an infinite area planar diode. The solution follows from starting with Poisson's equation, and requires solving a non-linear differential equation. This approach can also be applied to cylindrical and spherical geometries, but only for one-dimensional cases. By approaching the problem from Coulomb's law and applying the effect of an assumed charge distribution, it is possible to solve for space charge limited emission...

Problems in collecting and shipping human sera for clinical chemical analyses affect their stability and require proper preservation methods. It is shown that glutamic pyruvate transaminase is very unstable and serum cannot be shipped unless the shipping time is carefully controlled and is less than two days under refrigeration. A limit of four days handling time and avoidance of light exposure are required in bilirubin testing of specimens. Addition of 11 mg of a 10 to 1 mixture of finely...

A parametric analysis of the telecommunications support capability of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) was performed. Emphasis was placed on maximizing support capability provided to the user while minimizing impact on the user spacecraft. This study evaluates the present TDRSS configuration as presented in the TDRSS Definition Phase Study Report, December 1973 to determine potential changes for improving the overall performance. In addition, it provides specifications of...

A theoretical study was made to delineate the effects of thermochemical nonequilibrium in the inviscid flow field of a representative space shuttle orbiter configuration. The study was based on experimental pressure data which was used as an input to a stream tube computer program. The pressure data from two configurations are tabulated. Calculations were restricted to the windward plane of symmetry and the calculations covered an altitude range from 200,000 to 250,000 feet at velocities of...

The Rolls-Royce Transit Anemometer was applied to several rigs in the Whittle Laboratory. These included a 14 inch calibration jet, to demonstrate the intrinsic accuracy of the machine, and a static turbine cascade in which midspan traverses were produced of the entire duct and a boundary layer. Both of these plots accorded well with previous data and were very much more easily obtained. Data from a rotating cascade was encouraging. First, some measurements were made upstream without time...

Nanotubes, because of their very high strength, are attractive as reinforcement materials for ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Recently there has been considerable interest in developing and applying carbon nanotubes for both electronic and structural applications. Although carbon nanotubes can be used to reinforce composites, they oxidize at high temperatures and, therefore, may not be suitable for ceramic composites. Boron nitride, because it has a higher oxidation resistance than carbon,...

The development of a novel and inexpensive sensor network for detecting the electrostatic field (ESF) of a charged bullet was explored in this paper. The principle method used to measure the ESF of the passing object was based on a voltage-controlled variable capacitance. This method utilized a varactor pair and sinusoidal input signal to produce a significant change in voltage proportional to the minute change in capacitance caused by the passing object's ESF. A wired network was used to...

The Wanapitei impact structure is approximately 8 km in diameter and lies within Wanapitei Lake, approximately 34 km northeast of the city of Sudbury. Rocks related to the 37 Ma impact event are found only in Pleistocene glacial deposits south of the lake. Most of the target rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Huronian Supergroup. An almost completely vitrified, inclusion-bearing sample investigated here represents either an impact melt or a strongly shock metamorphosed, pebbly...

This paper reports on the navigation activities during Rosetta s Mars swing-by. It covers the Mars approach phase starting after a deterministic deep-space maneuver in September 2006, the swing-by proper on 25 February 2007, and ends with another deterministic deep-space maneuver in April 2007 which was also foreseen to compensate any navigation error. Emphasis is put on the orbit determination and prediction set-up and the evolution of the targeting estimates in the B-plane and their...

Pyrotechnic systems, high burn rate propellant and explosive-actuated mechanisms, have been used extensively in aerospace vehicles to perform a variety of work functions, including crew escape, staging, deployment and destruction. Pyrotechnic system principles are described in this report along with their applications on typical military fighter aircraft, Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and a representative unmanned spacecraft. To consider the possible pyrotechnic applications on the space shuttle the...

Conventional CMOS based logic and magnetic based data storage devices require the shuttling of electrons for data processing and storage. As these devices are scaled to increasingly smaller dimensions in the pursuit of speed and storage density, significant energy dissipation in the form of heat has become a center stage issue for the microelectronics industry. By taking advantage of the strong correlations between ferroic orders in multiferroics, specifically the coupling between ferroelectric...

PROTO-II is a nominal 10 TW, 320 kJ accelerator which has been used to study imploding plasma physics for the last few years. The machine has been modified to make it useful as a bremsstrahlung radiation source and to lower the inductance for better energy coupling to gas puff loads. The triplate water transmission line has been converted to a 4-line horizontal 8-plate transformer section feeding a 4-layer insulator stack, using a multiple rod crossover network. Hinged plates allow a constant...

A method of measuring the voltage produced by a helical explosive flux compression generator using a remote electric field antenna is described in detail. The diagnostic has been successfully implemented on several experiments. Measured data from the diagnostic compare favorably with voltages predicted using the code CAGEN [1], validating our predictive modeling tools. The measured data is important to understanding generator performance, and is measured with a low-risk, minimally intrusive...

It was reported in the late 1960s [1] that gas breakdown occurs during explosive and electrical operation of magnetic flux compressor generators (FCGs). Recently [2,3], we reported on experimental evidence of the formation of plasma and its propagation in the gas within the FCG with no electric field in the system. We named this phenomenon electric-field-free gas breakdown. In this paper, we discuss possible mechanisms for this type of gas breakdown. The first mechanism is related to the...
