A survey of temperature, heat-flux, and pressure measurements was obtained at speeds through Mach 8.0 on the second flight of the Pegasus air-launched space booster system. All sensors were distributed on the wing-body fairing or fillet. Sensors included thin foil-gauge thermocouples installed near the surface within the thermal protection system. Thermocouples were also installed on the surface of nonablating plugs. The resulting temperature time history allowed derivation of convective heat...

Improvements in spiral-bevel gear design were investigated to support the Army/NASA Advanced Rotorcraft Transmission program. Program objectives were to reduce weight by 25 percent, reduce noise by 10 dB, and increase life to 5000 hr mean-time-between-removal. To help meet these goals, advanced-design spiral-bevel gears were tested in an OH-58D helicopter transmission using the NASA 500-hp Helicopter Transmission Test Stand. Three different gear designs tested included: (1) the current design...

Aerodynamic, heat transfer, and system design studies to determine removable modifications for the Space Shuttle orbiter that would extend its forward center-of-gravity triom capability are summarized. Wind-tunnel tests were conducted at Mach numbers ranging from 0.25 to 20.3 to determine the most effective aerodynamic modifications. Heat transfer and system design studies determined the impact of the modifications on the thermal protection system and structural weight of the vehicle. The most...

As Oprah would say: "YOU get a fillet, YOU get a fillet, EVERYBODY gets a fillet!" I lost count after the first few. There are many fillets in this model, of various sizes and types. This is a raccoon bowl. I have hungry raccoons in my backyard, and I am clearly crazy that I want to feed them. But I do. Here's a timelapse video of about an hour compressed down into two minutes, if you'd like to see night vision raccoons: https://youtu.be/4aq2v68vPWc My next version will have...

This module accepts 3 points and a radius value and draws an arc of the supplied radius at the middle point as a polygon. Since it can't know what side of the angle should be filled, it assumes you're supplying the points in a clockwise manner. There is a 5th parameter for the number of segments to use when drawing the arc. This module uses my 2dWedge module [here](http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1843282) as a dependency - make sure you download all the files on this page.

As part of the continuing effort to identify approaches to improve the safety and reliability of the Space Shuttle system, a Five-Segment Booster (FSB) design was conceptualized as a replacement for the current Space Shuttle boosters. The FSB offers a simple, unique approach to improve astronaut safety and increase performance margin. To determine the feasibility of the FSB, a Phase A study effort was sponsored by NASA and directed by the Marshall Space Flight Center. This study was initiated...

Whether you need to mark out a rounded corner on the inside edge of a part you are making or measure out a fillet on an object you need a part to fit around, the fillet square is the right tool for the job. It includes four common fillet/round sizes: 1/8", 1/4", 1/2", 1". Just place, trace, and make.

The magnitude and variation of tooth pair compliance with load position affects the dynamics and loading significantly, and the tooth root stressing per load varies significantly with load position. Therefore, the recently developed time history, interactive, closed form solution for the dynamic tooth loads for both low and high contact ratio spur gears was expanded to include improved and simplified methods for calculating the compliance and stress sensitivity for three involute tooth forms as...

Vortex flows produced by submersibles typically unfavorably influence key figures of merit such as acoustic and nonacoustic stealth, control effectiveness/maneuverability, and propulsor efficiency/body drag. Sources of such organized, primarily longitudinal, vorticity include the basic body (nose and sides) and appendages (both base/intersection and tip regions) such as the fairwater, dive planes, rear control surfaces, and propulsor stators/tips. Spur gear stress analysis results are presented for a variety of loading conditions, support conditions, root radii, and rime thicknesses. These results are obtained using the SAP-IV finite element code. For fully supported rims (that is, with tight fitting hubs), the root surface stresses slightly decrease with decreasing rim...

Camera based tasks are commonly performed during orbital operations, and orbital lighting conditions, such as high contrast shadowing and glare, are a factor in performance. Computer based training using virtual environments is a common tool used to make and keep CTW members proficient. If computer based training included some of these harsh lighting conditions, would the crew increase their proficiency The project goal was to determine whether computer based training increases proficiency if...

Selection of the best shape of a fillet in a tension bar such that no yielding occurs has long attracted the attention of engineers. Dimensions and notations for the bar and fillet are shown. With symmetry, only the upper half of the bar is considered. The optimal design problem is to find a boundary shape to minimize the total area of the fillet such that no yielding occurs. The classical boundary value problem is reduced to a variational or energy related problem which not only has excellent...

// This routine creates a fillet between two arbitrary shapes. // It works by expanding each shape by some distance and then creating a very thin shell around these expanded shapes. These two shells are then intersected to give one point along the fillet. The distances are chosen so that, for a two shapes that intersect under right angle, these intersection points lie on a quarter circle, with fn_fillet=16 faces. // The hull() command is then used to hull two adjacent intersection points...

The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method of comparing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, Airline Quality Rating 2002, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for 2001. AQR scores for the calendar year 2001 are based on 15 elements that focus on airline performance areas important to air travel consumers. The Airline Quality Rating 2002 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings...

Adhesively bonded lap joints involve dissimilar material junctions and sharp changes in geometry, possibly leading to premature failure. Although the finite element method is well suited to model the bonded lap joints, traditional finite elements are incapable of correctly resolving the stress state at junctions of dissimilar materials because of the unbounded nature of the stresses. In order to facilitate the use of bonded lap joints in future structures, this study presents a finite element...

The design for RACE, a Rb-clock flight experiment for the ISS, is described. The cold collision shift and multiple launching (juggling) have important implications for the design and the resulting clock accuracy and stability. We present and discuss the double clock design for RACE. This design reduces the noise contributions of the local oscillator and simplifies and enhances an accuracy evaluation of the clock. As we try to push beyond the current accuracies of clocks, new systematic errors...

This a module for OpenSCAD to create a cube with rounded edges (fillets). It doesn't use minkowski or hull, thus it renders fast (enought). Usage: Like the build in module cube(), the first parameter is an array [x,y,z] The second, third, and fourth parameters are for the side, top and bottom fillet radius. They can be adresses with side=, top= and bottom=. Theese parameters work with arrays and take four values. Each value is the radius of the fillet on an edge, counted clockwise. The cube can...

With examples, we illustrate how implicitly specified surfaces can be used for grid generation with GridPro/az3000. The particular examples address two questions: (1) How do you model intersecting tubes with fillets? and (2) How do you generate grids inside the intersected tubes? With the results in a forthcoming paper which develops an easy-to-follow procedure for implicit surface modeling, we provide a powerful means for rapid prototyping in grid...

Procedures for automatic computation of wing-fuselage juncture geometry are described. These procedures begin with a geometry in wave-drag format. First, an intersection line is computed by extrapolating the wing to the fuselage. Then two types of filleting procedures are described, both of which utilize a combination of analytical and numerical techniques appropriate for automatic calculation. An analytical technique for estimating the added volume due to the fillet is derived, and an...
