Program KRASH has several features which can be used effectively to evaluate crashworthiness capability of vehicles during the initial stages of a design. Conceptually the program is designed to define the general behavior of structure and to provide data which can be utilized to assess chances of occupant survivability during a severe crash environment. While KRASH currently contains one measure of injury potential (Dynamic Response Index, DRI), the data obtained from KRASH are more useful as...

Results of a research program to determine the impact of towing transport airplanes at Boston-Logan Airport are presented. This study includes the measurement of actual towing loads during airline operations with the L-1011 at Los Angeles International Airport and Dorval, Quebec. The measured towing loads were obtained with an instrumented towbar and portable data recording package. Towing loads were also measured during controlled test conditions at Palmdale using the flight-test L-1011...

The results of an effort to develop a method of analysis of the structural response of general aviation airplane subjected to a crash environment are presented. A review and evaluation of 8491 obtained from National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) tapes are presented. Eighteen (18) accident cases from the FAA Civil Aeromedical Institute (CAMI) files are discussed. The performance parameters and structural design characteristics associated with 61 general aviation airplane models are used to...

Program KRASH, originally developed under Federal Aviation Administration sponsorship for predicting the response of general aviation airplanes to an impact environment, has been enhanced to include features that would facilitate the modeling of transport category airplanes. This document is the User's Guide which defines the input and output formats appropriate for this new version of Computer Program KRASH known as KRASH 85. Keywords: Crash dynamics; Nonlinear analysis; Transport aircraft;...

This document provides a comprehensive description of program KRASH, as modified. Included in this User's Manual are the Program KRASH (Description and Theory), Program Controls, and Listing. The User's Manual is part one of a three-volume document. The second volume describes modeling technique applicable to program KRASH to assist in the development of improved structural crashworthiness designs, as well as the detailed input requirements and output capabilities of KRASH. Volume III contains...
