Tiny metallic nanoparticles have the potential to change the landscape of defense technology, from obscuring warfighters from view to providing transparent displays in aircraft and vehicles. A nanoparticle is defined as a particle with one or more dimensions measuring 1 billionth of a meter (1 nanometer [nm]). Typical nanoparticles range from 1 to 1,000 nm. A typical human hair is about 90,000 nm thick. Therefore, an item of 1 nanometer would be invisible to the naked eye. Scientists at the...

Previous investigations studied the diffusion of nickel into copper bicrystals, while the present experiments have been concerned with the diffusion of gold into copper bicrystals. The theoretical solutions and approximations were evaluated mathematically and the results used for the analysis of the experimental data. The case of surface diffusion in metal systems is comparable to that of grain-boundary diffusion in that both involve concomitant volume diffusion. Therefore experimental and...

This work had three results: 1) construction of gold bipyramid nanostructures for tuning the plasmon resonance between visible/IR wavelengths; these structures with a high aspect ratio allowed extension of the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) toward IR wavelengths as far as 1850nm. 2) Optical transmission properties of dispersions of self-orienting gold nanoparticles (spherical and bipyramidal) in sol-gel hybrid silica, which could be used as optical limiters (transmitting at low levels...

Using scanning tunneling microscopy we observed reaction products of two chemisorbed thiolate species, methylthiolate and phenylthiolate, on the Au(111) surface. Despite the apparent stability, organometallic complexes of methyl- and phenylthiolate with the gold-adatom (RS-Au-SR, with R as the hydrocarbon group) undergo a stoichiometric exchange reaction, forming hybridized CH3S-Au-SPh complexes. Complementary density functional theory calculations suggest that the reaction is most likely...
