The grades of stainless steel have several applications such as aerospace, medical, power plants, and automobile industry. Especially stainless steel 316L (SS316L) has been successfully utilized in many sectors because of its excellent corrosion resistance, self-healing property, biocompatibility, high fatigue life and creep resistance. This reported work is a study of SS316L in gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) in order to enhance the strength of the weldment. The GTAW butt joint of SS316L was...

Aluminum MMC’s are widely used in various applications because of their higher mechanical and physical properties when compared with their base Al alloy. This paper focuses on the change in mechanical properties of various Al/SiC composites fabricated by using stir casting method. Effect of SiC reinforcement in different Al alloys on mechanical properties like hardness, tensile strength, wear test, percentage elongation, residual stress measurements are discussed in detail. For this purpose...

Experiments were conducted to study the cohesion of metals with surface films of varying thickness and hardness. It was established that the deformation necessary for the occurrence of cohesion is determined by the correlation of mechanical properties of the films and the base metal. The greater the relative hardness of the film the lower the deformation necessary for the occurrence of cohesion. The films are as plastic as the base metal prevent cohesion, since in this case it is impossible for...

The adhesion, friction, and micromechanical properties of ion-beam-deposited boron nitride (BN) films are reviewed. The BN films are examined in contact with BN metals and other harder materials. For simplicity of discussion, the tribological properties of concern in the processes are separated into two parts. First, the pull-off force (adhesion) and the shear force required to break the interfacial junctions between contacting surfaces are discussed. The effects of surface films, hardness of...

Since 1987 experiments dealing with comet nucleus phenomena have been carried out in the DFVLR space simulation chambers. The main objective of these experiments is a better understanding of thermal behavior, surface phenomena and especially the gas dust interaction. As a function of different sample compositions and exposure to solar irradiation (xenon-bulbs) crusts of different hardness and thickness were measured. The measuring device consists of a motor driven pressure foot (5 mm diameter),...

A diamondlike carbon film is deposited in the surface of a substrate by exposing the surface to an argon ion beam containing a hydrocarbon. The current density in the ion beam is low during initial deposition of the film. Subsequent to this initial low current condition, the ion beam is increased to full power. At the same time, a second argon ion beam is directed toward the surface of the substrate. The second ion beam has an energy level much greater than that of the ion beam containing the...

Pd-Cr alloys were investigated by thermal analysis, hardness measurements, X-ray analysis, microscopic examination of etched pieces, and temperature-resistance curves of the solid alloys. Only one compound, Pd2Cr3, m, 1389 deg, is formed. It possesses a cubic face centered lattice and forms with excess Pd a series of solid solutions with a minimum m.p. at 45 atoms% Pd. Hardness maximum appears at the Pd2Cr3 point. Pd2Cr3 forms no solid solutions with Cr but eutectic point appears at 25 atoms%...

This work outlines a procedure for simulating the flow field within multistage turbomachinery which includes the effects of unsteadiness, compressibility, and viscosity. The associated modeling equations are the average passage equation system which governs the time-averaged flow field within a typical passage of a blade row embedded within a multistage configuration. The results from a simulation of a low aspect ratio stage and a one-half turbine will be presented and compared with...

Created in 1959, "Paths of Steel" shows United States Steel and its operations in Pittsburgh at the height of the company's dominance of the steel industry. The movie looks at some of the research being applied to create innovation in the materials industry through alloys, heat treatment, and forging or rolling. The film was directed by James Petrie, a cameraman, editor, and director who made training and motivational films with Louis de Rochemont and via Potter, Orchard &...

The shapes of single event transients in linear bipolar circuits are distorted by exposure to total ionizing dose radiation. Some transients become broader and others become narrower. Such distortions may affect SET system error rates in a radiation environment. If the transients are broadened by TID, the error rate could increase during the course of a mission, a possibility that has implications for hardness assurance.

Short-term hot-hardness studies were performed with carburized and hardened AISI 8620, CBS 1000, CBS 1000M, CBS 600, and Vasco X-2 steels. Case and core hardness measurements were made at temperatures from 294 to 811 K (70 to 1000 F). The data were compared with data for high-speed tool steels and AISI 52100. The materials tested can be ranked as follows in order of decreasing hot-hardness retention: (1) Vasco X-2; equivalent to through-hardened tool steels up to 644 K (700 F) above which Vasco...

A theory for describing the evolution of the median/radial crack system in the far field of sharp-indenter contacts is developed. Analysis is based on a model in which the complex elastic/plastic field beneath the indenter is resolved into elastic and residual components. The elastic component, being reversible, assumes a secondary role in the fracture process: although it does enhance downward (median) extension during the loading half-cycle, it suppresses surface (radial) extension to the...

Hardness is defined as the withstanding capability of metal against penetration. Welding produces metallurgical transformations. Evaluation of hardness gives insight into these transformations. A proper study on weldment micro hardness will pave the path to enhance the mechanical reliability of the weldment. Thus, a study on mechanical and microhardness properties of 5052 aluminum alloy weldment using nonpulsed and pulsed current welding at frequencies of 2,4,6Hz has been carried out in the...

The effect of various quenching media on the hardness and microstructure of 60 NITINOL (60 NiTi) were evaluated. Specimens of 60 NiTi were heat treated in air at 1000 degC for 30 min or 2 hr, then quench cooled by one of seven different methods. The microstructure and hardness of this material was examined post heat treatment. The results indicated that the quench method had little effect on the resulting hardness and microstructure of 60 NiTi.
