The bandwidth and frequency enhancement of the free electron laser instability in a mildly relativistic (gamma or = 1.15) electron beam propagating through a dielectric loaded waveguide is presented. For an appropriate choice of the dielectric constant epsilon and the thickness of the dielectric material, it is shown that the instability bandwidth and frequency can be greatly enhanced for specified values of the beam energy and the wiggler wavelength. Ocean wave statistics were obtained from twenty recordings of fifteen minutes each. Spectral densities are presented together with amplitude distributions and the results are discussed in light revelant theories. In particular, it is shown that the sea surface fluctuation is a Gaussian statistic in the majority of cases; but that non-Gaussian fluctuations are observed from time to time.

The gyrotron amplifiers in two slow wave structures, the disk and the helix loaded waveguides, are investigated for wide band applications. For each structure, properties of the vacuum waveguide mode are examined in connection with the gyrotron application, and the gyrotron dispersion relation is obtained. For the disk loaded gyrotron, it is found that the group velocity of the waveguide mode can be easily varied by the disk parameters, and the gain and the bandwidth are at least comparable to...

Available data from four different gap tests were compared. The study indicated a linear relation between the critical gap lengths (50% point) of the NOL LSGT and those of each of the other three tests, hence a linear relation for any pair of the 4 tests. On the other hand, the approximate equivalency curve between the 50% gaps of the NOL LSGT and those of the recently developed expanded LSGT has been drawn with some curvature. The reasons for this are presented, and the detonation properties...

A high-powered, continuous beam laser system is examined in terms of the physical conditions which exist if the laser beam is brought to a diffraction-limited, real focus in a moderate vacuum environment. Ionization of the gas at the focus by multiphoton processes is extensive, but it is shown that neither reflection of the beam by the plasma at the focus nor absorption by ionization is sufficient to disrupt propagation of the beam through the focus.
