Space agencies are under pressure to utilize better bandwidth-efficient communication methods due to the actual allocated frequency bands becoming more congested. Also budget reductions is another problem that the space agencies must deal with. This budget constraint results in simpler spacecraft carrying less communication capabilities and also the reduction in staff to capture data in the earth stations. It is then imperative that the most bandwidth efficient communication methods be...

The purpose of this study is to investigate the question: Would eliminating the crucible eliminate the wall-induced nucleation of one of the liquid phases in an immiscible alloy and result in undercooling of the liquid into the metastable region thereby producing significant differences in the separation process and the microstructure upon solidification. Another primary objective of this research is to study systems with a metastable miscibility gap and to directly determine the metastable...

The Delco Electronics three-phase static frequency converter uses the Power Center approach to precision waveform generation. With this technique, 80% of the power to the load is controlled directly by a thyristor bridge circuit between a dc voltage supply and a three-phase load. The remaining 20% of the power is transferred to the load via a series of low impedance taps on an autotransformer. The taps are sequentially connected to the load such that a low harmonic content, stair-step...

The initial phase of the project was the development of a breadboard circuit capable of performing all the electrical functions of a three-phase frequency converter. After demonstration of three-phase performance, the work scope was extended to further develop the breadboard circuits to produce 10 kW of single-phase power at 60 Hz or 400 Hz. Concurrent with development of the 10 kW frequency converter, Delco developed improved step voltage commutation methods for a 100 kW frequency converter...

A 60 watt portable power fuel cell system has been built operating on ambient air and hydrogen as supplied by the deactivation of lanthanum nickel hydride. The use of the endothermic hydride deactivation process in conjunction with the fuel cell considerably reduced steady state system operating temperatures. The hydride reaction was initially sustained through use of heating coil, but thereafter could be maintained at 20 C by transferring waste heat from the fuel cell.
