As the Kaiserdom (the “Imperial Cathedral) of Aachen also referred the Aachen Cathedral, of great religious, architectural and historical importance is the building. In 805 AD by Charlemagne was built, on German church architecture was highly influential its unique design and for many centuries it was a site of pilgrimage and imperial coronations.

To hang over the shrine Barbarossa provided a bronze chandelier in 1168, which still today remains. In a splendid golden shrine had put Charlemagne’s bones the Frederick II in 1215, in the middle of the Octagon beneath the chandelier which was originally placed. 10 years later received another honor the Charlemagne, in Chartres Cathedral was devoted to him when an entire window.

The Palatine Chapel and the Treasure of it – Originally are from the Carolingian era the bronze gate of the gallery and the columns, but survives none of the decoration which is original. In a Cosmati style is the fine marble floor but from 1913 it dates.

The Gothic Choir and the Treasure of it – The Octagon which forces the main altar, known as the Pala d’Oro with a magnificent golden frontal is decorated. From about 1000 AD it dates and of either Heinrich II or Otto III was a gift. With a wooden frame are held together the golden panels and of their original order may be out.
