The memorandum considers the detection of overhead nuclear explosions in space by riometer measurement of the effects of explosion-induced ionization on the absorption of high-frequency cosmic noise. The induced ionization is calculated as a function of height and time for a 1-kT X-ray impulse having temperatures of .5, 1.0, and 2.0 kev and having burst heights from 1,000 to 100, 000 km. The absorption at each height due to the induced ionization is then calculated at a radio frequency of 30...

This report describes the prototype 16-beam, 38.6 MHz riometer system developed by APTI and the University of Maryland for the HAARP program. The prototype system is the forerunner for a full-scale imaging riometer diagnostic instrument for characterizing the ionospheric volume perturbed by controlled RF heating experiments. The prototype system, installed at the HAARP site near Gakona, AK, consists of a 1 x 16 antenna array phased in one dimension (beam width of 6.7 deg) and oriented...

Seasonal variations of ionospheric absorption were studied using riometer (A2) measurements over a wide latitude range. In agreement with the results of earlier studies of A1 radiowave absorption, equinoctial maxima of approximately equal amplitude are observed in the auroral zone and near the equator. However, at intermediate latitudes riometer absorption maximizes during the fall season, whereas the A1 data show a semi-annual variation with maxima occurring in summer and winter. The autumn...

Polar Cap Absorption (PCA) events have been observed at Thule, Greenland, using a ground-based riometer for the past decade. The riometer was operated at a fixed frequency of 30 MHz, and used a two-element Yagi antenna directed toward the zenith. This report provides information for operational systems personnel and systems designers concerning the mean behavior of PCAs and other aspects of the phenomenon; for example, the extreme cases in duration and magnitude. In addition, included as an...

A detailed investigation of the approximate square-root relationship between riometer absorption and solar proton fluxes has been carried out. The relationship is shown to be valid for night as well as day conditions, with differences in the constants. The atmospheric chemistry basis for the differences in the constants is discussed. Results of the Chatanika DNA 617 Radar support coverage of the EXCEDE rocket experiment are presented, along with magnetometer and riometer data to give a more complete picture of ionospheric processes. The EXCEDE rocket was launched at 0546:40 UT on 28 February 1976. The purpose of the experiment was to stimulate and measure shortwave infrared emissions under quiet ionospheric conditions. The Chatanika radar supported the experiment in two ways--first, by monitoring the ionosphere and assuring...

A list of the significant solar proton events for the period 1955 through 1969 has been prepared with identification limited to events with solar proton induced absorption as measured by a riometer in the earth's polar caps. A total of 139 events were identified over this 15-year period. This table was compiled after a thorough search of primary data sources in order to ascertain an onset time, a time of maximum absorption, the value of the maximum absorption, and the duration of each event....

Two case studies are presented of the global auroral responses to shocks in the solar wind at Earth. The z component of the interplanetary magnetic field, Bz, is negative ahead and behind the first shock and positive for the second case. A sudden-commencement geomagnetic storm develops in each case, with maximum D sub st somewhat 190 nT. An immediate auroral response is detected at all longitudes around the auroral oval, in which auroral luminosities increase by a factor of 2-3 with the first...

The onset of auroral breakup was studied by using a variety of instruments with time resolution of some tens of second. Rapid sequences of all-sky photographs, and fast meridian scans by photometers, show that breakup is usually preceded by moderate brightening, followed by fading of the auroral brightness lasting one or two minutes, before the actual breakup itself. This optical activity is closely correlated with the development of auroral radar echoes. Data from a magnetometer network...

Both the anisotropic and isotropic diffusion theories can be used to extrapolate proton fluxes for E greater than or equal to 10 meV for over 50% of the particle events. The isotropic diffusion theory uses a diffusion coefficient: D = Mr sup beta. It was found that M and beta tended to be functions of flare position on the solar disk. A measurement of the interplanetary flux in near earth space gives a good indication of the polar cap fluxes. It was found that the 30 MHz absorption over the...

The interaction between the geomagnetic and interplanetary magnetic fields is studied through its effects upon the intensities of solar electrons reaching the polar caps during times of strongly anisotropic electron fluxes in the magnetosheath. During the particle event of November 18, 1968, electrons of solar origin were observed outside the magnetopause with detectors aboard OGO-5. Correlative studies of these satellite observations and concurrent measurements by riometers and ionospheric...

A practical scheme for using Solar Radio Burst Data of U-shaped spectra to predict the slope as well as the magnitude of the associated proton spectra has been developed, based on empirical correlation studies. A prediction scheme for riometer absorption, using proton spectral parameters as the input has been developed. Theoretical studies relate the source electron distribution parameters to those of the radio spectra, based on the model that the U-shaped spectra originate from a single group...

This is the final report on NASA Grant NAG5-9706. This project explored riometer (relative ionospheric opacity meter) antenna designs that would be practical for a Mars surface or balloon mission. The riometer is an important radio science instrument for terrestrial aeronomy investigations. The riometer measures absorption of cosmic radio waves by the overhead ionosphere. Studies have shown the instrument should work well on Mars, which has an appreciable daytime ionosphere. There has been...

The spatial and temporal variations in cosmic radio noise absorption were investigated at College, Alaska, during 1962-1963 by means of riometers using one narrow beam antenna and two relatively broad beam antennas which were pointed at different directions along the magnetic meridian. The narrow beam antenna had a 12 deg beamwidth and was periodically swung in the magnetic meridian from 12 deg north of zenith to 12 deg south of zenith. Each of the broad beam antennas had a 26 deg beamwidth and...
