One could tell branch and rank insignia by the the gold stripes on the collars, trousers, rank straps, cap device, etc. In 1869 the various cap devices for the line officers and branches was replaced by a small eagle atop a large U.S. shield with over crossed anchor, later the eagle was increased in size remained almost the same except in the early 1940s the eagle changed with looking to the opposite direction.

Gold and silver-wire bullion embroidered branch and rank insignia attached to the high collar coats worn by officers of the United States Navy from 1881 to 1917.
