Flag rank officers of the U.S. Navy start with one star for Commodore, two stars for Rear Admiral, three stars for Vice Admiral, four stars for Admiral and four stars and two anchors for Admiral of the Navy George Dewey. At the end of World War Two the rank of Fleet Admiral was created for five admirals and it was five stars forming a pentagon. These pictures were drawn by hand by Herbert Booker, a retired insignia artist.

One could tell branch and rank insignia by the the gold stripes on the collars, trousers, rank straps, cap device, etc. In 1869 the various cap devices for the line officers and branches was replaced by a small eagle atop a large U.S. shield with over crossed anchor, later the eagle was increased in size remained almost the same except in the early 1940s the eagle changed with looking to the opposite direction.

Twenty years ago I illustrated these rank mores from the actual insignia to show those worn by Admiral of the Navy George Dewey to the Fleet Admiral rank created toward the end of the Second World War for Halsey, King, Leahy and Nimitz between 1944 and 1945. Photographs were looked at for detail as well as actual rank marks (shoulder boards).

This rank marks commonly referred to as "shoulder boards," were drawn with a drafting pen filled with India ink on velum 300% to 400% larger than actual size. These pictures were based on actual rank marks, believe it or not?

Gold and silver-wire bullion embroidered branch and rank insignia attached to the high collar coats worn by officers of the United States Navy from 1881 to 1917. The coats and trousers were navy blue with black mohair trim in the fashion of the United States Military Academy cadet service uniform. These uniforms also came in all white with white mohair trip for wear in hot climates like the Canal Zone, Cuba, the Philippines and Puerto Rico, rank was also wore in stripes on the lower sleeves...
