Intriguing catalytic activity of silver and ruthenium nanoparticles has potential application as a nanostructured catalyst. Metal nanoparticles are of wide interest because of their large surface area and some of the properties which differs them from those of bulk metal solids. The increased catalytic activity of these metal nanoparticles is attributed to their size and shape, which can be controlled be controlled by an insoluble polymer stabilization. The present study is aimed to synthesis,...

The next generation of rocket engine turbopumps is being developed by industry through Government-directed contracts. These turbopumps will use fluid film bearings because they eliminate the life and shaft-speed limitations of rolling-element bearings, increase turbopump design flexibility, and reduce the need for turbopump overhauls and maintenance. The design of the fluid film bearings for these turbopumps, however, requires sophisticated analysis tools to model the complex physical behavior...

Highly active Ru/TiO2 catalysts for Sabatier reaction have been developed. The catalysts have shown to be stable under repeated shutting down/startup conditions. When the Ru/TiO2 catalyst is coated on the engineered substrate Fe-CrAlY felt, activity enhancement is more than doubled when compared with an identically prepared engineered catalyst made from commercial Degussa catalyst. Also, bimetallic Ru-Rh/TiO2 catalysts show high activity at high throughput.

The electronic spectra and electrochemical potentials of the species Ru(bipy)x(NN)3-x(2+)(bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, NN = unsaturated diimine, x = 1,2) are correlated via fundamental relationships involving reorganisation and solvation energies. It is argued that the presence of two distinct Ru yields ligand charge transfer transitions allows comparison of the reorganisation energies therefore. Originator supplied keywords include: Ruthenium, Bipyridine, Reorganisation energy, Electrochemistry,...

For equilibrium studies, pure solutions of ruthenium(III) and ruthenium(IV) perchlorates or sulfates are needed. A survey is given of synthetic and analytical methods reported in literature. Since none of them was suitable for our purpose, new or modified methods were worked out. For the preparation of ruthenium(IV) sulfate solution, RuO4 was reduced with H2O2 in dilute H2SO4 and the ruthenium(IV) cations separated from complex anions by a cation exchanger. For the preparation of...

Our aim was to design soft, active materials that: 1) function in an autonomous, self-sustained way, 2) perform multiple, complex functions, and 3) alter their functionality in a programmable manner in response to external stimuli. We took advantage of the unique properties offered by polymer gels undergoing the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. The BZ gels can transduce chemical energy into mechanical oscillations in the absence of external stimuli. Consequently, these polymer networks can...

New supported ruthenium caytalysts have been prepared a) by diffusing Ru(CO)5 into the pores of faujasitic zeolites, and b) by sorbing ruthenium carbonyl cluster compounds onto oxide supports. After thermal activation, the supported ruthenium systemes catalyse the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide to mixtures of paraffins and olefins, but the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide hydrogenation results in typical Anderson-Schulz-Flory (A-S-F) product distributions, ie. low in C2 and C3 hydrocarbons,...

Designing a hypersonic vehicle is a complicated process due to the multi-disciplinary synergy that is required. The greatest challenge involves propulsion-airframe integration. In the past, a two-dimensional flowpath was generated based on the engine performance required for a proposed mission. A three-dimensional CAD geometry was produced from the two-dimensional flowpath for aerodynamic analysis, structural design, and packaging. The aerodynamics, engine performance, and mass properties arc...

Ru, Mo and Pd are very useful indicators for the identification of nucleosynthetic components. We have developed techniques for Pd isotopes, in an effort to check the extent of isotopic effects in this mass region and for a Pt-group element which is less refractory than Ru. Stable Pd isotopes are produced by the process only (102Pd), the s-process only (104Pd), the process only (Pd-110) and by both the r- and s-processes (Pd-105, Pd-106, Pd-108). Kelly and Wasserburg reported a hint of a shift...

Aryidene complexes of ruthenium have been successfully prepared. These complexes possess reasonable stability and undergo cyclopropanation reactions with olefins. Cis-stereochemistry predominates in the latter reactions. A remarkably stable cyclopropyl substituted carbene complex of iron has been prepared. This complex also undergoes cyclopropanation reactions. (Author)

Fuel cells are attractive power sources for a variety of Department of Defense (DoD) needs. Among the various types of fuel cells, direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are particularly well-suited for mobile applications (such as soldier power, unmanned underwater systems, and communication devices) since DMFCs employ easily manageable liquid methanol fuel with excellent energy storage densities. However, the adoption of DMFC technology has been hampered by high system costs and complexity, low...

We have found ferromagnetism in epitaxially grown superlattices of CaRuO3=CaMnO3 that arises in one unit cell at the interface. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy indicate that the difference in magnitude of the Mn valence states between the center of the CaMnO3 layer and the interface region is consistent with double exchange interaction among the Mn ions at the interface. Polarized neutron reflectivity and the CaMnO3 thickness dependence of the...

Cyclopentadienyl carbonyl complexes of iron and ruthenium have been shown to have broad applications in organic synthesis. The viability of these complexes as intermediates is dependent upon convenient and rapid synthetic routes for their preparation. This research has primarily been directed towards the extension of phase-transfer techniques to the preparation of iron and ruthenium allyl and crotyl complexes. In addition, the synthesis of iron and ruthenium olefin complexes by photochemical...

A wet oxidation process was developed for oxidizing waste materials, comprising dissolved ruthenium salt in a reactant feed stream containing the waste materials. The feed stream is introduced into a reactor, and the reactor contents are then raised to an elevated temperature to effect deposition of a catalytic surface of ruthenium black on the interior walls of the reactor. The feed stream is then maintained in the reactor for a period of time sufficient to effect at least partial oxidation of...

The heterogeneous decomposition of liquid hydrazine on a supported ruthenium catalyst is a complex reaction. The kinetics have been analysed in terms of two simultaneous reactions: 3N2H4 to N2 + 4NH3 and 2N2H4 to N2 + H2 + 2NH3. Both reactions are first order with respect to hydrazine concentration. It is suggested that the first reaction occurs when hydrazine is associatively adsorbed on the catalyst but that when it is dissociatively adsorbed the second reaction occurs.

A ruthenium porphyrin catalyst with styrene side chains was incorporated into a highly cross-linked polymer by co-polymerization with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in the presence of a chloroform porogen. Oxidation reactions catalyzed by the resulting polymer were accelerated when perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PFMC) was used as a co-solvent. Moreover, the PFMC co-solvent was found to change the substrate selectivity of the catalytic reactions. Both effects could be explained by a PFMC-induced...
