The aim of this paper is to show that Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) and a recent theory of plausible and paradoxical reasoning introduced by Dezert and Smaradache and thus called Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT), can be successfully applied to improve a supervised classification of remotely sensed data.

Sea level rise (SLR) in response to looming climate change is being considered as a major impediment to coastal areas. Acute wave activities and tidal propagations of semi-diurnal to mixed type are impairing the morphology of the Indus Delta in Pakistan. In this study a synthetic approach has been adopted using multi sensor satellite and ground data in order to integrate the individual effect of topography, oceanic activities and vegetative canopy for deduction of a synergic impact over the...

A study of aerosol variations in the Central Pacific was conducting utilizing NOAA-9 AVHRR data and concurrent shipboard measurements from the NOAA R/V OCEANOGRPAHER during the RITS-88 cruise. The transect was conducted 7 April to 5 May 1988 along longitude 170 degrees W from latitude 50 degrees N to 12 degrees S. Aerosol physiochemistry measurements were provided every 1 degree of latitude. Satellite observations of optical depth, Aerosol Particle Size Index (S12), channel 1 (0.63 um), and...
Topics: Aerosol-cloud interaction, AVHRR satellite imagery
This study appraises the conditions of the existing drainage network of Samaru, Zaria, Nigeria, in order to identify areas constantly affected by flood on yearly basis and hence measures are put forward that will adequately cater for the incessant flood problems bothering the community. The entire catchment has been sub-divided into 13 sub-catchments from which the catchment areas, composite runoff coefficients, lengths of the farthest points to the outlets, and elevations were obtained from...

Using three microphone array configurations at two aircraft body stations on a Boeing 777-300ER flight test, the acoustic radiation characteristics of the sidewall and outboard floor system are investigated by experimental measurement. Analysis of the experimental data is performed using sound intensity calculations for closely spaced microphones, PATCH Inverse Boundary Element Nearfield Acoustic Holography, and Spherical Nearfield Acoustic Holography. Each method is compared assessing...

A better understanding of the role mesoscale convective systems (MCS) play in the genesis stages of tropical cyclones will increase the ability to predict their formation. This thesis employs polar-orbiter microwave and geostationary infrared satellite imagery to document MCS structure and evolution during tropical cyclone genesis. Microwave imagery at frequencies of 19.35 GHz and 85.5 GHz are used to define convective and stratiform cloud areal amounts, percent coverage, and time-integrated...

A one year record of AVHRR satellite images, beginning October 1, 1988, was processed and evaluated to determine the source of cold, nutrient-rich water in Monterey Bay. Wind records indicated a strong correlation with the intensity of upwelling at Afio Nuevo and Point Sur as seen in numerous satellite images. Close quantitative agreement between satellite derived multi-channel sea surface temperature and in situ observation of sea surface temperature by oceanographic research ships support...
