In this report we describe a compact, easily deployed, moored system for oceanographic and meteorological observations in the coastal ocean. The system consists of a surface and subsurface mooring pair deployed adjacent to one another. Compared to a single catenary surface mooring, this arrangement allows the entire water column to be instrumented. All of the instruments in the system log high resolution time series data. Additionally, the mooring line instruments periodically report averaged...

Since the end of the Korean war in 1953, the United States has been the guarantor of peace and stability on the Korean peninsula. Today, after thirty-six years of U.S. military protection, the South Korean economy is one of the world's most dynamic, fully capable of financing its own national defense. Its freely elected democratic government has dropped its hard-line, anti- communist rhetoric and is pursuing a northern diplomacy aimed at a peaceful reunification. Finally, its military stands on...

The United States Navy plans to decommission several classes of warships in the next decade. Each of the major Southern Cone countries of Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, and Chile) perceives a geopolitically-driven need for a blue-water navy. Many catchment hydrologic and ecologic processes are impacted by the storage capacity of soil water, which is dictated by the profile thickness and water retention properties of soil. Soil water retention properties are primarily controlled by soil texture, which in turn varies spatially in response to microclimate-induced differences in insolation, wetness, and temperature. All of these variables can be strongly differentiated by slope aspect. In this study, we compare quantitative measures of...

When the American Civil War ended in 1865, Northern expectations were that a properly executed reconstruction plan would result in the South's restoration and rapid entry back into the Union.
