EJECTION STATISTICS OBTAINED FROM THE AIR FORCES OF SEVEN NATIONS ARE ANALYZED, INCLUDING FIGURES ON THE INCIDENCE OF DEATH, THE INCIDENCE OF FRACTURE AND MULTIPLE FRACTURES, AND PREFERENTIAL FRACTURE SITES. A BASIC REVIEW OF THE ANATOMY OF THE SPINE IS FOLLOWED BY A DISCUSSION OF THE MECHANICS OF SPINAL FRACTURE. IT IS DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE THE STAGE OF EJECTION AT WHICH FRACTURES ARE MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR -- EXPULSION FROM THE AIRCRAFT OR LANDING -- BUT THE POSITION OF THE PILOT AT THE MOMENT...

The general topic was in the area of display design alternatives for improved man-machine performance. The intent was to define and assess a display design concept oriented toward providing this task-oriented information. The major focus of this concept deals with the processing of data into parameters that are more relevant to the task of the human operator. Closely coupled to this concept of relevant information is the form or manner in which this information is actually presented....

The mutual influences of compression shocks and friction boundary layers were investigated by means of high speed wind tunnels.Schlieren optics provided a clear picture of the flow phenomena and were used for determining the location of the compression shocks, measurement of shock angles, and also for Mach angles. Pressure measurement and humidity measurements were also taken into consideration. Results along with a mathematical model are described.

Information is one of an organization's most important assets. For this reason the development and maintenance of an integrated information system environment is one of the most important functions within a large organization. The Integrated Information Systems Evolution Environment (IISEE) project has as one of its primary goals a computerized solution to the difficulties involved in the development of integrated information systems. To develop such an environment a thorough understanding of...

The barium ion cloud experiment involved the release of about 2 kg of barium at an altitude of 31 482 km, a latitude of 6.926 N., and a longitude of 74.395 W. Significant erosion of plasma from the main ion core occurred during the initial phase of the ion cloud expansion. From the motion of the outermost striational filaments, the electric field components were determined to be 0.19 mV/m in the westerly direction and 0.68 mV/m in the inward direction. The differences between these components...

With the launch of the telecommunications Olympus satellite a new area began for the Olympus Propagation Experiments (OPEX) group. The years of preparations are now paying off - the experiments are underway and the co-operative effort is now turning its attention to the processing and analysis of data and to the interpretation of results. The aim here is to give a short review of the accomplishments made since NAPEX 13 and the work planned for the future. When ESA's Olympus was launched in...

Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) studies are carried out on nitric oxide and oxygen molecules in the arc jet flows at the NASA Johnson Space Center Reentry Testing Facility. Measurements are taken in the free stream and from a blunt body shock layer. Tests are performed under different flow conditions to determine the feasibility and sensitivity of the LIF technique for various species. This is developed as a part of high enthalpy flow diagnostics and will be useful to elucidate the rotational...

The purpose of the Galileo missions is to make observations of Jupiter and its satellites using an orbiting spacecraft and an atmospheric entry probe. The mission will determine the chemical composition and physical state of the Jovian atmosphere and its satellites, and the topology and behavior of the magnetic field and energetic particle flux of Jupiter. The mission plan calls for a Venus Earth Earth Gravity Assist (VEEGA) trajectory having a launch to end of mission duration of approximately...

A compact and rugged probe based on the phase Doppler method was evaluated as a means for characterizing icing clouds using airborne platforms and for advancing aircraft icing research in large scale wind tunnels. The Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) upon which the new probe was based is now widely recognized as an accurate method for the complete characterization of sprays. The prototype fiber optic-based probe was evaluated in simulated aircraft icing clouds and found to have the...

Realistic tradeoff data and evaluation techniques were studied that permit conceptual design of operational earth resources ground processing systems. Methodology for determining user requirements that utilize the limited information available from users is presented along with definitions of sensor capabilities projected into the shuttle/station era. A tentative method is presented for synthesizing candidate ground processing concepts.

Wave equations with damping in the boundary conditions are considered. Techniques to ascertain the uniform preservation under approximation of exponential stability are presented. Several schemes for which preservation can be guaranteed are analyzed. Numerical results that demonstrate the lack of stability under approximation for several popular schemes (including standard finite difference and finite element schemes) are given.

This work describes two algorithms for computing the angular rate and attitude in case of a gyro and a Star Tracker failure in the Microwave Anisotropy Probe (MAP) satellite, which was placed in the L2 parking point from where it collects data to determine the origin of the universe. The nature of the problem is described, two algorithms are suggested, an observability study is carried out and real MAP data are used to determine the merit of the algorithms. It is shown that one of the...

A theory is presented for computing waves radiated from waves on a smooth surface. With the assumption that attention of the surface wave is due only to radiation and not to dissipation in the surface material, the radiation coefficient is derived in terms of the attenuation factor. The excitation coefficient is determined by the reciprocity condition. Formulas for the shape and the spreading of the radiated wave are derived, and some sample calculations are presented. An investigation of...

The correspondence between robotic manipulators and single gimbal Control Moment Gyro (CMG) systems was exploited to aid in the understanding and design of single gimbal CMG Steering laws. A test for null motion near a singular CMG configuration was derived which is able to distinguish between escapable and unescapable singular states. Detailed analysis of the Jacobian matrix null-space was performed and results were used to develop and test a variety of single gimbal CMG steering laws....

Although pyrotechnics have successfully accomplished many critical mechanical spacecraft functions, such as ignition, severance, jettisoning and valving (excluding propulsion), failures continue to occur. Provided is a listing of 84 failures of pyrotechnic hardware with completed design over a 23-year period, compiled informally by experts from every NASA Center, as well as the Air Force Space Division and the Naval Surface Warfare Center. The difficulty of developing reliable distributed software is an impediment to applying distributed computing technology in many settings. Experience with the ISIS system suggests that a structured approach based on virtually synchronous process groups yields systems which are substantially easier to develop, fault-tolerance, and self-managing. Six years of research on ISIS are reviewed, describing the model, the types of applications to which ISIS was applied, and some of the reasoning that...

A wind-tunnel investigation has been conducted at Mach numbers of 1.50, 2.16, and 2.86 to obtain axial-force data on a metric rectangular-box cavity with various length-to-depth ratios. The model was tested at angles of attack from -4 deg to -2 deg. The results are summarized to show variations in cavity axial-force coefficient for deep- and shallow-cavity configurations with detached and attached cavity flow fields, respectively. The results of the investigation indicate that for a wide range...

Optical sensors have been developed to detect lightning from space during both day and night. These sensors have been fielded in two existing satellite missions and may be included on a third mission in 2002. Satellite-hosted, optically-based lightning detection offers three unique capabilities: (1) the ability to reliably detect lightning over large, often remote, spatial regions, (2) the ability to sample all (IC and CG) lightning, and (3) the ability to detect lightning with uniform (i.e.,...
