The purpose of this study was to determine the problems and possibilities of developing a digitized mapping system for the ground tactical commander. The specific tactical units targeted were the Marine Infantry regiment and below. Particular emphasis was placed on the microcomputer as the implementation hardware. A review of the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) database was conducted and related Department of Defense programs were studied. To develop insights and to provide a graphical tool for...

Over the past few decades man has concentrated considerable effort in deriving algorithms that can classify terrain in a manner similar to the human visual system. If an implementable algorithm were obtained, man could use this algorithm to add vision to autonomous land vehicles. The applications of autonomous land vehicles are numerous. Movement of large military equipment to previously inaccessible areas and the exploration of unknown areas are examples. The scope of this study is to develop...

The purpose of this investigation was twofold. The first goal was to develop an understanding of the flow behavior and interaction with the blades of a paddlewheel type Surface Impulse Propulsion (SIP) system operating ever a water surface. The second goal was to experimentally evaluate the effect of interblade webbing and wheel internal pressure on the thrust performance of a webbed SIP system. A series of configurations of forward speed, wheel rpm f blade immersion depth, web length, and...

NPSNET is a low-cost visual simulation system designed and constructed at the Naval Postgraduate School. NPSNET uses digital terrain data and renders scenes involving vehicles, aircraft, cultural features, and natural features in real-time. The implementation of a terrain paging algorithm in NPSNET is discussed. Terrain paging expands the terrain area available for simulation and overcomes the limits of main memory size. Hierarchical data structures commonly used in visual simulation systems...

The purpose of this study was to determine if a Virtual Environment (VE) model of a natural environment could provide familiarity training transfer. The methods used included aspects from sport orienteering. 15 male participants comprising three ability groups participated within three treatment groups. The treatment groups were comprised of a map study, map and VE study, and an actual environment study. The results indicated that navigational ability had a more pronounced effect on performance...

Terrain navigation is a critical skill in the military. Virtual environments (VEs) have been suggested as a possible tool in training spatial knowledge. However, little research has been conducted into the ability of VEs to impart spatial knowledge of a real world area. This thesis research addresses the utility of VEs to impart spatial knowledge of a natural terrain area compared to traditional methods. Twenty subjects were divided into four training conditions in two experiments. The first...

The modern tactical commander has a flood of sensory and intelligence information at his disposal. A tool is required to sort that information, allowing the commander to choose the information that is most pertinent to the decisions he must make at that time. This study is the preliminary work on the command and control workstation of the future. The focus of this effort is in two areas. One is a user interface using multiple windows and a mouse controlled cursor. This interface allows the user...

The ability of man to scan terrain, compare it with a topographical representation, and make decisions based on his analysis is a unique and complex talent. Teaching a machine to make these same comparisons and analyses is a formidable task. However, the development of acceptable algorithms to permit the appropriate classifications of terrain will expand the capabilities of machines in a number of endeavors including route planning and movement across selected terrain. Recent research in...

Fractal Geometry is a recent synthesis of old mathematical constructs. It was first popularized by complex renderings of terrain on a computer graphics medium. Fractal geometry has since spawned research in many diverse scientific disciplines. Its rapid acceptance has been achieved due to its ability to model phenomena that defy discrete computation due to roughness and discontinuities. With its quick acceptance has come problems. Fractal geometry is a misunderstood idea that is quickly...

The terrain of a battlefield is in a constant state of change. There are new berms and emplacements being built, and bombs are falling leaving a crater marked terrain behind. There are bridges that must be crossed and bridges that may not be crossable. Dynamic terrain is currently not implemented in virtual battlefield simulators such as SIMNET and NPSNET, and as a result there is a lack of needed realism to the battlefield. This work adds the dynamic features: berms, craters and bridges into...

Many current army combat simulation models require digitized terrain inputs for their execution, resulting in a costly and time-consuming operation. A methodology to generate parametric terrain as a function of the number of hill masses and the height, location, spread, and slope of the hills is presented in this paper. Modified bivariate normal (MBVN) distribution function and a linear function cutting the MBVN function are employed to achieve the terrain representation. Analysis of various...

This thesis develops a prototypical model for the planning of maneuver unite and engineer obstacle placement for the Airland Research Model under development at the Naval Postgraduate School. The model utilizes a multidimensional network for the representation of terrain and presents two algorithms for combat panning. A mid-European scenario for a brigade in defense is used to contrast the model solution to combat planning problems with established tactical doctrine. The prototypical model...

This thesis presents an interactive computer program called MASK which generates radar and optical line-of-sight coverage envelopes based on terrain masking and refractive propagation effects. MASK is designed primarily as an aid in planning air strikes against radar defended land targets and has additional applications to air defense network planning. A large digital terrain data base provides extensive coverage of potential areas of interest to the tactical planner.

Department of Defense (DOD) senior leaders are chartered to make decisions on proceeding or canceling programs based on cost data. Affordability is one of the biggest reasons for the DOD to cancel programs. When making affordability decisions, DOD leaders weigh the life cycle costs from research and development, technology maturation, system testing, procurement and operations, and support. The authors developed an affordability decision model to be used to make affordability decisions for...

This thesis research addresses the problem of mounting human entities to other non-human entities in the virtual environment. Previous human entities were exercised as individual entities in the virtual environment. Yet there are many applications (i.e. shipboard damage control, amphibious landings, helicopter vertical assaults) where human entities need to mount other vehicles within the virtual environment. The approach taken was to re-engineer the Naval Postgraduate School's Shiphandling...

The importance of maximizing one's Line of Sight (LOS) while minimizing enemy LOS is of critical importance in war. LOS between an observer and a target exists if a straight-line vector between the observer and target is not intersected by terrain. Many sensors and kinetic or non-kinetic weapons and enablers require intervisibility between the shooter and target for employment. A means to analyze a terrain map and determine one's LOS would aid route planning onboard aircraft to minimize...

Some anti tank obstacles for a 28 mm wargaming layout (1/56 scale). There are two versions, with either three or four obstacles grouped together on a base. The base is 150 mm long and 40 mm wide. From a visual point of view, I prefer the version with four obstacles per base. Also because it is closer to the original design ([link](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/69/Serine03.JPG)). However, the design with only three obstacles per base allows for a miniature on a 25 mm base to...

My first ever creation in Blender, hopefully I'll keep at it and make more! A Dwarven Treasure chest, for keeping all your dwarven treasure, like gold, and ale, and golden ale tankards! Should print to be a large chest for 28mm models, scaled to 50% it makes a nice smaller chest, though you may find your printer cuts off a couple of details. I do have a copy of this which is open but I need to fiddle with the lid to make it actually printable, let me know if there is any interest. Edit...

I use a cheapish foam for my D&D boards, so I needed an alternative to the Openlock options for pools found in a dungeon. I modeled these entirely in Solid Works. I made a squiggily spline to make the water and revolved it. It doesn't look bad, but it looks more like a portal than a pool at the moment. I'm hoping painting it will tone down the rings a bit.

I just don't like the non-realistic look of miniature scenery houses that are placed next to a road without a pavement between them. The scale is 1/100th, so for 15mm wargaming. It's a modular system. Update sept 19 2018; corner piece now added.

These barricades are usable with 28mm miniatures as half barricades or full height barricades with 15mm miniatures.By combining them you can construct vast networks of them. The side angles are compatible with AT-43 barricades like https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2775413 or https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:156149 . if you want a bigger size, simply scale them. as long as you scale them proportionaly, they are compatible with each other.

As if Vikings in the Aegean weren't anachronistic enough! (This faction is just for fun.) The Ancient Philippine Navy uses special ships, which you can find for free on Thingiverse here. Unlike the Greek ships which are the mainstay of Ortus Novae: Trireme, Philippine ships are not built to ram. As a faction, the Philippine Navy gains a +3 to move range for all ships. If they take over a Greek ship fitted for ramming, they can certainly use it for such, but the stock Philippine vessels are not...

Vikings? In the Aegean? During the Peloponnesian War? Madness! (This faction is just for fun.) Ortus Novae: Trireme is a modification to the Ortus Novae rules that will allow you to conduct massive tabletop armada battles using ancient Greek warships (and now, Vikings!) that you've assembled (or printed) yourself. Using the same quick and frantic rule set as the core game of Ortus Novae, you can simulate clashes between massive hordes of triremes, biremes, pentecounters and quadremes without...

Some dead Troopers that I plan on turning into scatter terrain and also battle markers. Could plane cut them in Meshmixer so they sit flat on board. Or print as is and base them. Will update once they are printed. The scale was a bit off. Adjusted. Also sliced them so that they would lay flat on the ground.
