An optically controlled welding system (10) wherein a welding torch (12) having through-the-torch viewing capabilities is provided with an optical beam splitter (56) to create a transmitted view and a reflective view of a welding operation. These views are converted to digital signals which are then processed and utilized by a computerized robotic welder (15) to make the welding torch responsive thereto. Other features includes an actively cooled electrode holder (26) which minimizes a blocked...

wave/particle 2002 The screen is divided into three sections in which fluids and chiming spheres float and fall through changing gravitational fields. This is a strange and mesmerising meditation on the nature of matter, a painterly and dance-like work enveloped in a rich, immersive soundtrack. This extraordinary film was made by taking a tank of glycerine, water and oil, and a box of Chinese health balls on a parabolic flight. Such flights are used at the Space Centre in Star City, Moscow for...

In this chapter an approach is presented that for a given G/T at the Earth terminal, provides the satellite EIRP required for a given data rate in terms of minimum technology risk design, as defined in section 7.1.1. The approach starts from an initial design made according to the criterion of minimum total mass of the antenna and RF power subsystems. Using definitions of technology risk, or complexity, for both subsystems, the design is refined such that the minimum technology complexity is...

Development of highly capable small UAVs present unique challenges for technology protagonists. Size constraints, the desire for ultra low cost and/or disposable platforms, lack of capable design and analysis tools, and unique mission requirements all add to the level of difficulty in creating state-of-the-art small UAVs. This paper presents the results of several small UAV developments, the difficulties encountered, and proposes a list of technology shortfalls that need to be addressed.

Carbohydrate metabolism has been shown to be affected in a number of ways by different models of hypokinesia. In vivo glycogen levels in the soleus muscle are known to be increased by short-term denervation and harness suspension. In addition, exposure to 7 days of hypogravity also caused a dramatic increase in glycogen concentration in this muscle. The biochemical alterations caused by unloading that may bring about these increases in glycogen storage in the soleus were sought.

Previous work has demonstrated the large potential for hybrid active-passive systems for attenuating interior noise in aircraft fuselages. The main advantage of an active-passive system is, by utilizing the natural dynamics of the actuator system, the control actuator power and weight is markedly reduced and stability/robustness is enhanced. Three different active-passive approaches were studied in the past year. The first technique utilizes multiple tunable vibration absorbers (ATVA) for...

THE AIR FLOW IN THE REGION OF A CHANGE OF CROSS SECTION IS QUASI-STATIONARY AT LOW FREQUENCIES. IN THIS CASE THE INFLUENCE OF FLOW VELOCITY ON THE REFLECTION COEFFICIENT OF THIS CHANGE IN CROSS SECTION CAN BE EXPLAINED BY THE DIFFERENTIAL FLOW RESISTANCE. THE CHANGE OF THE REFLECTION COEFFICIENT IS CALCULATED IN THE SAME MANNER AS POWELL TREATED CONTINUOUS CHANGES OF THE CROSS SECTION. WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY, THE INFLUENCE OF THE PRESSURE GRADIENT BEHIND THE CHANGE OF CROSS SECTION ON THE...

NASA's Microgravity Science and Applications Program is directed toward research in the science and technology of processing materials under conditions of low gravity. The objective is to make a detailed examination of the constraints imposed by gravitational forces on Earth. The program is expected to lead ultimately to the development of new materials and processes in Earth-based commercial applications, adding to this nation's technological base. The Harrier YAV-8B aircraft is capable of vertical and short-field take-off and landing (V/STOL) by directing its four exhaust nozzles toward the ground, or conventional flight by rotating its nozzles into a horizontal position. The British Royal Air Force and the United States Marine Corps have used this aircraft for more than 30 years to provide a quick reaction time for troop support, and reduce the need for long runways. The success of this powered-lift (PL) vehicle has also prompted the...

Investigations concerning maximum permissible safe flow rates for condensed oxygen in steel pipelines were conducted. It was found that solid dirt particles, such as rust, roll scale, and flakes, in the steel pipeline will not ignite as long as practical flow rates which do not cause significant pressure drop are maintained. At flow rates above eight meters per second, restrictions, such as valves, may constitute a danger. The problem is eliminated by using copper tubing instead of steel pipe.
