On May 13, 2002, MODIS detected numerous bushfires in northern Australia. It is still fairly early in the fire season there, and these fires may be agricultural or prescribed burns intended to lower the risk of more sever fires later in the dry season. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 5/13/02.

A straight line of fires (marked with red dots) in Australia’s “Top End” is probably the result of aerial burning, where prescribed fires are set using incendiaries dropped from aircraft. This false-color image over Australia, produced using NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data, shows where pollution from human industry reduced clouds' particle sizes. Polluted clouds may rain less frequently then unpolluted clouds because the pollutants prevent water droplets from growing large enough to precipitate. Blue areas are cloudless, while purplish-red areas are covered by thick clouds comprised of large droplets. The yellowish-green and orange streaks are clouds...

North Australia has the largest and most frequent fires on the whole continent. Grasslands and tropical savannas dominate the region, flourishing during the rainy season and drying to tinderbox conditions after the rains pass. By some estimates, as much as half of the area covered by savanna woodlands, such as the Cape York Peninsula (shown at right), burns every one to two years. The most devastating fires usually occur late in the dry season, which runs from May until October. In this...

The normally dry salt pan lakes of Western Australia began to fill in the wake of two tropical storms, Monty and Evan, in late February and early March 2004. Salt pan lakes form where evaporation exceeds rainfall. Such lakes typically fill seasonally, and then disappear, leaving the salty minerals that give them their name. Heavy rains starting on January 12, 2004, brought widespread flooding to Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Though high rivers have isolated towns and destroyed livestock, the water is a welcome relief after years of drought in the region. The waters have caused more than $20 million in damage to roads in Queensland, and sections of New South Wales have been declared natural disaster zones. But despite this, damage has been minimal. The floods are a normal part of the wet season, and,...

A massive low-pressure system treated eastern Australia to wild weather on February 2, 2005. The storm brought destructive winds, heavy rain, low temperatures, and even snow to parts of Australia when the southern continent should be at the peak of summer. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (<a href="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov">MODIS</a>) image, captured at 2:10 p.m. Queensland time by NASA’s <a...

In the dry grasslands and savannas of eastern Northern Territory, Australia, bushfires spread rapidly in dry fuels during the transition from dry season to wet. This pair of images from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (<a href="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov">MODIS</a>) on NASA’s <a href="http://terra.nasa.gov/">Terra</a> satellite shows how rapidly three large fires, marked with red dots, spread between...

Near the center of the SeaWiFS image lies a region whose greenness is in stark contrast to the surrounding landscape. This site comprises the more or less contiguous floodplain in the middle reaches of the Fortescue River and is a major breeding ground in Western Australia. Sensor: OrbView-2/SeaWiFS. Data Start Date: 6/13/00.

By Tuesday evening (local time), January 24, 2006, news reports from southwestern Western Australia indicated that damp, cool weather had lessened—but not eliminated—the fire risk posed by a large blaze that had been threatening the towns of Yarloop, Waroona, and Hamel. This image shows the fires in that region on January 22, 2006. The image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer <a...

These true-color images from NASA’s <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov" target="outlink">Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer</a> (MODIS) show a portion of the eastern hemisphere Antarctic coastline. The image from October 18, 2001, shows the sculpted Sabrina (left) and Banzare (right) Coasts. On the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia, numerous large fires were detected by the <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov">Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer</a> on the <a HREF="http://aqua.nasa.gov">Aqua</a> satellite on October 19, 2002. Burn scars are especially prominent on the western half of the Peninsula as dark brown patches against the dun-colored landscape. Sensor: Terra/MODIS.

Grasslands and tropical savannas dominate northern Australia. These landscapes dry dramatically after the rainy season and become extremely fire prone. The most devastating fires usually occur late in the dry season, which runs from May until October. In this true-color <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov">Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer</a> (MODIS) image from October 10, 2002, numerous large fires on the Cape York Peninsula are marked with...
