Rivers that empty into large bodies of water can have a significant impact on the thawing of nearshore winter ice. This true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from May 18, 2001, shows the Nelson River emptying spring runoff from the Manitoba province to the south into the southwestern corner of Canada's Hudson Bay. The warmer waters from more southern latitudes hasten melting of ice near the shore, though some still remained, perhaps because in shallow coastal...

With the coming of spring, the ice on Canada’s Hudson Bay has begun to break up. Large chunks of ice float near the eastern shore of the bay, while to the west, the center of the bay remains frozen. In the upper right corner is the Ungava Peninsula, the northern part of the Canadian province of Quebec. With its sub-arctic climate, the snow-covered peninsula is home to the Inuit and Cree Nations. To the south green vegetation slowly blends into the winter-brown landscape, another sign that...

SeaWiFS captured this view of a large smoke plume that is blowing southward across the Great Lakes -- hiding much of Lake Superior from view. The smoke is coming from fires raging in northern Alberta. In the image you can see the path of the smoke from the northwest corner of the image and then arcing southward over Hudson Bay where its brownish color is most evident against the icy white background. Sensor: OrbView-2/SeaWiFS. Data Start Date: 5/30/01.

To the southwest of Hudson Bay (upper right), multiple large fires were burning across Manitoba (left) and Ontario (right) on July 2, 2003. In Ontario, there were 25 active fires of various sizes burning over an area of 262,715 hectares (almost 650,000 acres) as of June 30. These images and fire detection were made by the <a...

The normally pristine Hudson Bay was suddenly paved over in late November 2005. This rapid “urbanization” wasn’t accomplished with asphalt or concrete, but with clouds. Heat, moisture, and wind collaborated over the bay to build “cloud streets,” parallel lines of clouds that align with the wind. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard the <a...

Fields of sea ice melt in northeastern Canada’s Hudson Bay in this false-color Aqua MODIS image acquired on July 5, 2003. The ice in this image is bright turquoise blue, while liquid water is black. Land appears in shades of green and brown, and clouds are white and light blue. During the winter, sea ice accumulates to the point where the ice is so thick as to prohibit the passage of all but the sturdiest of ice-breaking ships, and oftentimes prohibits even them. But as the spring and summer...

The ice in Hudson Bay, Canada, is beginning its spring thaw, although most of the land was still blanketed in snow when this image was captured by MODIS on April 23, 2002. The advancing spring has a long way to go thaw Hudson Bay and it southern extension, James Bay. The large inland sea, formed when glacial retreat allowed seawater to fill in the vast depression caused by the glaciers Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 4/23/02.

This true-color MODIS image from April 27, 2002, shows the beginning of the spring thaw in James Bay, Canada. James Bay is the southern extension of the much larger Hudson Bay, and it separates the province of Ontario (left) from Quebec (right). At the southwestern tip of the Bay, the wetlands around the Moose River appear to be thawing some as well. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 4/27/02.

Intruding between Ontario (left) and Quebec (right), James Bay extends southward from the larger Hudson Bay to the north. In this true-color MODIS image, the Bay is melting and is full of brown sediment washed in from numerous rivers. The island in the Bay is called Akimiski Island. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 5/31/01.
