In the Idaho wilderness, scattered fires continued to burn in early September 2005. This image of the area was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer <a href="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov">(MODIS)</a> on NASA’s <a href="http://terra.nasa.gov">Terra</a> satellite on September 6. Actively burning areas detected by MODIS are outlined in red. Smoke has settled into the Selway River valley. In the...

By late August 2000, severe forest fires had been burning in Montana and Idaho for more than a month. As of Aug. 29, a total of 57 fires were burning in both states. The smoke from these fires is considered a health risk, especially for the very young and very old, and health advisory has been issued for those with respiratory problems who live in the area. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) shows smoke in the Bitterroot Mountains on the morning of August...

This visible light/infrared composite image over Montana and Idaho was acquired by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on Aug. 23. The image shows the locations of actively burning wildfires (red pixels) and the thick shroud of smoke they produced (grey-blue pixels). There were 57 wildfires burning across both states. A single MODIS image can be up to 2,330 kilometers wide, allowing fire scientists to monitor a much larger area than can be covered on the ground or by aircraft....

A handful of wildfires sprang up in Idaho in the third week of August 2008, affecting hundreds of acres in forests and wilderness areas west of the Bitterroot Range Mountains. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite shows the area on August 18. Places where MODIS detected active fires are outlined in red. A few of the larger fires are labeled. According to the August 20 morning report from the National Interagency Fire Center, the...

This visible light/infrared composite image over Montana and Idaho was acquired by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on Aug. 23, 2000. The image shows the locations of actively burning wildfires (red pixels) and the thick shroud of smoke they produced (grey-blue pixels). There were 57 wildfires burning across both states. A single MODIS image can be up to 2,330 kilometers wide, allowing fire scientists to monitor a much larger area than can be covered on the ground or by...

Dozens of large fires were burning across British Columbia, Canada, on August 20, 2003. The fires (marked with yellow) have forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes and put thousands on evacuation alert. This image of the fires was captured by the <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov" target="outlink">Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer</a> (MODIS) on the <a HREF="http://aqua.nasa.gov"...

Dozens of large fires were burning across the Rocky Mountains in Canada (top), Montana (bottom right), and Idaho (bottom center) on August 14, 2003. This image shows smoke plumes trailing from the fires, which were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite and are marked with red dots in the image. Sensor: Aqua/MODIS. Data Start Date: 8/14/03. Data End Date: 8/14/03.

This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (<a href="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov">MODIS</a>) image captures the transition from the plains of Central Canada to the rugged mountains of Western Canada. In the lower left corner of the image, the Rocky Mountains form a grey-brown arch, and a few of the peaks are still capped with snow on July 24, 2004. A few clouds also hang over the mountains. To the east of the mountains, agricultural fields appear as...

In the Northern Rockies in mid-August 2005, more than a dozen fires were burning across Washington, Idaho, and Montana. This image of the tinder-dry, flammable region was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer <a href="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov">(MODIS)</a> on NASA’s <a href="http://aqua.nasa.gov">Aqua</a> satellite on August 15. Locations where MODIS detected active fires are marked in red....
