Dozens of large fires were burning across the Rocky Mountains in Canada (top), Montana (bottom right), and Idaho (bottom center) on August 14, 2003. This image shows smoke plumes trailing from the fires, which were detected by the modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite and are marked with red dots in the image. The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this...

Fire season is winding down in western North America, but this false-color image from the modis.gsfc.nasa.gov Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite reveals the season's fire-scarred landscape. Vegetation is in shades of green, while burned areas are red. Scars dot the Northern Rockies from Canada (roughly top half of image) to Montana (bottom right) and Idaho, to its west. Additional large scars are visible in the Coast Mountains (left) which...

Extreme heat lingered over much of the western United States in early July 2007. Temperatures soared to triple digits, meeting or breaking records from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Great Falls, Montana, said news reports. The oppressive heat contributed to creating prime fire conditions, so that, when dry thunderstorms (lightning storms accompanied by little or no rain) rolled through on July 7, lightning sparked dozens of fast-moving...

In southeastern Washington, the School Fire was raging through the Umatilla National Forest about 16 miles south of the town of Pomery. According to reports from the National Interagency Fire Center on August 8, 2005, the fire had grown to 32,000 acres and was not at all contained. This image of the region was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov (MODIS) on NASA's aqua.nasa.gov Aqua satellite on August 7. Although most of the United States enjoyed clear skies on April 19, 2006, North and South Dakota and sections of Montana and Wyoming were hammered with a late-spring snow storm. The storm dumped up to two feet (60 centimeters) of snow on the northwestern Plains, knocked out power in thousands of homes and businesses, and closed highways, reported the Associated Press. The storm was also blamed for four deaths, most of which occurred in a single accident on an ice-covered road. The Moderate...

This image of the charred landscape was captured by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on August 2. The Missouri River and its surrounding ecosystems are struggling in the tight fist of a 6-year drought. In North Dakota, 374-kilometer-long Lake Oahe, the nation's fourth largest reservoir, is so low that it has left the state. The long, thin reservoir extends upriver from the Oahe Dam on the Missouri from Pierre, South Dakota, to Bismarck, North Dakota. North of the state line, more than 100 kilometers of the lake that were formerly about 8 kilometers wide have reverted to a narrow river. The...

As the Mars Global Surveyor Primary Mission draws to an end, the southern hemisphere of Mars is in the depths of winter. At high latitudes, it is dark most, if not all, of the day. Even at middle latitudes, the sun shines only thinly through a veil of water and carbon dioxide ice clouds, and the ground is so cold that carbon dioxide frosts have formed. Kaiser Crater (47Ê_S, 340Ê_W) is one such place. At a latitude comparable to Seattle, Washington, Duluth, Minnesota, or Helena, Montana,...

California was not the only western state affected by fire during the last weekend of July. Parts of Montana and Wyoming were covered by a thick pall of smoke on July 30, 2000. This true-color image was captured by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS). It is much easier to distinguish smoke from cloud in the color SeaWiFS imagery than the black and white Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) imagery. However, GOES provides almost continuous coverage <a...

Fast-moving forest fires raced through Glacier National Park in northwest Montana on July 25, 2003. The fires (marked in red) forced thousands of tourists and staff to evacuate the park (image center). This image of the fires was captured on July 25, 2003, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. Sensor: Aqua/MODIS.

On August 1, 2003, dozens of large fires were burning across western North America in Canada (top half of image) and the United States (bottom half). Huge plumes of smoke were streaming northeastward from massive fires in Canada’s British Columbia (left) and Alberta (right) provinces, while across the international border, fires were burning in (left to right) Washington, Idaho, and Montana. More than 20 large fires are burning in the Northern Rockies region of Montana and Idaho as of September 4, 2003. Nearly half a million acres in the U.S. have been affected by the fires, which are marked in red in this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the <a HREF="http://terra.nasa.gov/"...

Fast-moving forest fires raced through terrain at the front range of the Rocky Mountains in northern Montana (bottom right)) and Alberta, Canada (top right), in July 2003. In Montana, the fires (marked in red) forced thousands of tourists and staff to evacuate Glacier National Park (image center) in late July, while in Canada, the blaze forced many residents of the small community of Hillcrest to evacuate their homes on Sunday,July 27, as the fire, moving through the nearby forest at almost 27...

Wildfires in the western United States have consumed about 6 million acres of forestland, as of Aug. 25. In Montana alone, fires have consumed more than 600,000 acres and show no signs of letting up. Fire officials, calling this the worst fire season in 50 years, have asked for help in battling the blazes. President Clinton ordered U.S. Army troops from North Carolina and Kentucky to help combat the flames. This image animation is based on a time series of NOAA GOES-10 satellite data, extending...

Roughly 2,000 fires burned across portions of Montana and Idaho, consuming more than 400,000 acres. This false-color image was acquired by MODIS on Sept. 7, after rains helped extinguish the flames. Burn scars left by the fires appear as dark purple patches. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 9/7/00.

Clear skies over a large portion of the North American West reveal smoke from forest fires burning in the region. The large fires currently burning in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States are producing a significant amount of air pollution, as indicated by the elevated levels of carbon monoxide over the region. This false-color image shows the concentrations of carbon monoxide at an altitude of roughly 3 km (700 millibars) in the atmosphere. These data were taken by the Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument aboard NASA?s Terra satellite for the period Aug. 1-7, 2003....

The Missouri River and its surrounding ecosystems are struggling in the tight fist of a 6-year drought. In North Dakota, 374-kilometer-long Lake Oahe, the nation’s fourth largest reservoir, is so low that it has left the state. The long, thin reservoir extends upriver from the Oahe Dam on the Missouri from Pierre, South Dakota, to Bismarck, North Dakota. North of the state line, more than 100 kilometers of the lake that were formerly about 8 kilometers wide have reverted to a narrow river....

Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming are captured in their entirety in this true-color Terra MODIS image acquired July 12, 2002. The Rocky Mountains first enter the United States in northern Idaho and Montana, and continue their way south through Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. Farther north, in Canada’s Alberta, the Rockies still seem to have some snow on them. Also present are a few scattered fires—at Alberta’s eastern edge; in northwest Saskatchewan; in northwestern Montana; in northwestern,...
