Twenty-two teams of undergraduate and graduate students from throughout the country tested their robot designs in a "head-to-head" challenge at the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, near NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla., May 27-28. Teams remotely controlled their excavators or "lunabots" to determine which one could collect the most simulated lunar regolith, or dirt, in a given time. The 1st place winning team was Montana State University, whose lunabot excavated 21.6 kilograms,...

A major snow storm slid across the United States over the weekend of December 15, 2007, laying down ice and snow across the country from the Rockies to the Great Lakes. More than a foot of snow fell in some places, canceling air travel and causing some states to forbid all but emergency vehicles from being on the roads. This was the second major storm to wallop the country's mid-section in December; the earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images.php3?img_id=17850 first arrived at the...

According to the September 4 report from the National Interagency Fire Center, 24 large fires burned in Montana and Idaho in early September 2007. Many of these fires had been burning in the states' remote, mountainous terrain for more than a month. Throughout the summer, the fires occasionally produced thick clouds of smoke that spread across the Great Plains and as far as the East Coast. An anomalous warming of the central and eastern Pacific along the equator is part of a well-known climate event called El Nino. An El Nino began in the spring of 2006 and reached its peak in November and December. El Nino has far reaching effects. The anomalous warming of sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific affects general atmospheric circulation patterns, which impacts both temperature and precipitation patterns well into middle latitudes. Deviations in the rainfall patterns across...

From December to March, snowfall was light in the northwestern United States. Now at winter's end, the Pacific Northwest is facing ongoing drought. Melting snow feeds the region's streams and rivers throughout the summer, so if little snow falls, drought ensues. By March 17, 2005, snowpacks in the mountains of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and western Montana were at near-record lows, nearly guaranteeing low water levels on rivers and streams during the summer. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric...

In eastern Montana, the Missouri Breaks Complex Fire burned more than 100,000 acres in late July 2003. This image of the charred landscape was captured by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on August 2. In this false-color image, water is deep blue, vegetation is shades of green, naturally bare ground (or very low vegetation) appears light purple, nad the burned area south of the Missouri River appears charcoal. The large fires currently burning in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States are producing a significant amount of air pollution, as indicated by the elevated levels of carbon monoxide over the region. This false-color image shows the concentrations of carbon monoxide at an altitude of roughly 3 km (700 millibars) in the atmosphere. These data were taken by the Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite for the period Aug. 1-7, 2003....

Fires continued to burn in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada (top), and northwest Montana (center) on July 28, 2003. Several fires were burning in Glacier National Park in Montana, forcing the continued evacuation of tourists, park staff, and residents in nearby communities. The Wedge Canyon Fire -- the northernmost of the Montana fires -- has burned almost 18,900 acres and destroyed or damaged 29 structures. Meanwhile, in Alberta, the Lost Creek Fire is keeping about 1,000 people away...

This false-color image creates a dramatic contrast between vegetation (green) that was spared by the Wedge Canyon Fire in northwest Montana and the burned area (bright pink). This image is from the Advanced Land Imager sensor on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite on July 29, 2003. The image uses observations made by the sensor in the Short Wave Infra-Red part of the electromagentic spectrum. These wavelengths of light aren't visible to the human eye. The scar stretches over the thin blue...

Through a shroud of smoke, the scorched, brown landscape left by the Wedge Canyon Fire in northwest Montana is visible in this image from the Advanced Land Imager sensor on the Earth Observing 1 satellite. The brown scar stretches over the tan ribbon of the Flathead River, which runs diagonally from top center to right center edge. At the time this image was acquired on July 29, 2003, the southwest perimeter of the fire appears most active, with a thick cloud of smoke rising from the fire. The...
