Bushfires in southeast Australia are still burning out of control, threatening farmland, livestock, and homes in Victoria and New South Wales, Australia. According to news reports, the fire situation in New South Wales and Victoria, Australia, is grave. Hot temperatures and winds gusting up to 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour have kept bushfires burning out of control in southeastern New South Wales and northeastern Victoria. The fire situation may be the worst the area has experienced in more than 50 years, and in Victoria, government officials are making plans to call up the army for firefighting assistance. Smoke continues to pour from the...

Nearly six years of regional drought and rapidly increasing demand for water have resulted in decreasing water levels in lakes throughout East Africa. Water levels in Africa's largest lake, Lake Victoria, have dropped by about 1 meter (3 feet) over the past 10 years. The drought has similarly impacted the source regions of the Nile River, reducing water flows downstream into Egypt and Lake Nasser. This pair of images documents recent drops in water levels in the Toshka Lakes region of Egypt....

Everyone knows that NASA studies space; fewer people know that NASA also studies Earth. Since the agency’s creation almost 50 years ago, NASA has been a world leader in space-based studies of our home planet. Today, NASA operates 18 of the most advanced Earth-observing satellites ever built. In honor of the deployment of this Earth Observing System, NASA is pleased to share the next generation of its series of stunning “Blue Marble” Earth images. This image of Africa from March 2005 is...

Much of the lushness of vegetation surrounding Lake Victoria (top center) appears to have faded with the lengthening of the season. (Compare to image from June 2, 2002.) Now fires (red dots) dominate the landscape as the agricultural burning season gets underway. This image was acquired on July 9, 2002, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on the Terra satellite. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 7/9/02. Data End Date: 7/9/02.

Firefighters in southeast Australia got a small break over the weekend of Jan. 25, as cool, damp weather gave an opportunity for fire control lines to be established around many threatened communities. Conditions are expected to become dangerous by mid-week, with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and gusty winds. So far the blazes in Victoria and New South Wales have scorched more than 1 million acres. This true-color <a HREF="http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov"...

While winter approaches the Northern Hemisphere, Australia is welcoming a productive spring growing season. In 2002, drought kept crop production well below average in many parts of the country, but in 2003, much of the country is on track for a record or near-record grain harvest.Satellite images of vegetation greenness are a comprehensive and consistent way to track growing conditions of both natural vegetation and crops. By comparing the ratio of different kinds of energy reflected back to...

In the Great Rift Valley in eastern Africa, scores of fires were burning on February 22, 2005, when this image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite. A massive plume of smoke from a large fire event dominates this image of Victoria, Australia acquired on January 24, 2005. This raging brushfire is still occurring in and around Grampians National Park, west of Melbourne. As of January 26, 2006, some 700 firefighters on the ground supported by a dozen or more aircraft were unable to contain the blaze as their efforts were being hampered by heat and high winds – with gusts upwards of 50 kilometers per hour (30 miles per hour)- that are...

Bushfires were burning out of control in several locations in southern Australia in mid-January 2006. Firefighters faced blazes across southern Western Australia, South Australia, and Victoria, which is pictured in this image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite. Everyone knows that NASA studies space; fewer people know that NASA also studies Earth. Since the agency's creation almost 50 years ago, NASA has been a world leader in space-based studies of our home planet. Today, NASA operates 18 of the most advanced Earth-observing satellites ever built. In honor of the deployment of this Earth Observing System, NASA is pleased to share the next generation of its series of stunning ''Blue Marble'' Earth images. This image of Africa from March 2005 is just...

On January 28, 2002, MODIS detected several fires burning in the African countries of Uganda (top center) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (left), and the smoke from these fires is partially obscuring Lake Albert, Lake Edward, and Lake Kivu (in order from top to bottom). The grayish cast to Lake Tanganyika to the south and Lake Victoria, to the east is due more to sunglint than smoke. These lakes all fall along Africa's Great Rift Valley, where three tectonic plates are pulling away from...
