The aim of this dissertation is to explicate memory's role in catechesis. Catechesis is a term that early Christians chose to describe their "...work of teaching the gospel and...to mean 'instruction given by word of mouth.'" A brief historical overview confirms the continuity between catechesis and memory from apostolic to present times. Selected tasks of catechesis, liturgy and worship, modeling, personal relationship, verbal instruction or explanation, listening attentively,...

The early life and professional career of Dr. Satoru Takeuchi, a noted Japanese librarian, educator, and author, are explored here within the context of Japanese library education since World War II. Professor Takeuchi, now retired from the University of Library and Information Science (ULIS) in Tsukuba, Japan, has been an influential educator, administrator, and author in Japan for well over 40 years. He has written and translated books on children's literature, storytelling, library...

Tests were conducted to determine the size at which different-shaped symbols of the same color appeared equivalent. Subjects included sixth-, ninth-, and eleventh-grade students, cartographic university students, and advanced design students. A preliminary evaluation indicating little difference in the response of sixth graders and design students suggested the existence of basic rules of viewing the shapes. Further studies with spot, line, word, and over-all pattern symbols are planned to...

This paper is primarily based upon an analysis of faculty workload at several midwestern universities. A faculty member's total workload consists of three different assignments: teaching, research, and public service. The average faculty member spends from 50 to 55 hours each week in these pursuits. The time spent in teaching is usually expressed in terms of contact hours and credit hours which, in turn, are controlled by three factors: (1) the class level of the student; (2) the accustomed or...

An aspect of an undergraduate psychology course on adult development was the preparation of case records on adults who consented to be studied. Participants (1) developed their abilities to observe and accurately record adult behavior across a variety of ages and contexts; (2) withheld judgments about behavior when evidence was lacking; (3) substantiated statements about behavior with evidence; (4) sought the meaningfulness and/or function of behavior; (5) gained knowledge and appreciation of...

Students in a large human development course (n=306) took two measures of academic causal attributions: a general measure of perceived contributors to a cross-section of course outcomes and a specific measure of perceived contributors to performance on the course examinations. Results indicate that students perceive personal effort as the primary contributor to a cross-section of course outcomes. Teacher input, personal ability, and luck followed in rank order as perceived contributors. In...

The role and extent of adult education in community colleges were examined in this paper. The literature indicated no common definition of adult education except that it involves lifelong learning. One source identified five forces causing adults to seek further education. They are: basic education, degree objective, occupational training, homemaking education, and avocation and geriatric courses. Unfortunately, development of adult education programs at community colleges is often frustrated...

Over 50% of American universities have special programs for high risk or disadvantaged students, most of whom come from different ethnic or cultural backgrounds and whose educational and economic background is considered markedly inferior to that of regular university students. Many of these programs, however, are token efforts, e.g., 100 high risk students in a student body of 20,000. Although the most common characteristic of high risk students is a lack of funds, their economic deficiency...

Black culture has always been considered inferior, as the patterns of integration testify: the Black child has been sent to the white school but never vice-versa. The net result of America's history of discrimination has been a negative self-image for the Black person, an image which the "Black is Beautiful" movements are trying to counteract. Positive self and cultural images are necessary for raising expectations and helping Blacks to unite to gain civil rights. [Not available in...

Ability tests in use today and the educational programs of the schools are examined from a Black perspective. It is stated that it is incumbent upon educators to develop appropriate learning experiences in the classroom which relate to the Black child's background experiences. The following issues are raised: (1) I.Q. tests (predictor variables) are biased in favor of white children and against Black children, (2) educational programs (criterion variables) are biased against Black children, (3)...

This article tells the story of a writer for whom "voice" is an important element that he feels he once had but has lost in his writing. The article mostly places the blame on his trying to please teachers and professors and listening to their comments about his writing. It quotes many scholars (such as Lev Vygotsky and Jerome Bruner) and authors (such as Truman Capote and T.S. Eliot) on just what "voice" is, but the writer's own definition does not exactly satisfy him. It...

This study first determined how well two types of critical thinking measures, generic and subject-specific, predicted performance on course tests. Secondly, the study examined the extent to which critical thinking changed from the beginning to the end of the course. Two generic and one subject-specific measure of critical thinking were used in the study. A total of 428 college students participated in various phases of the study across 3 semesters. All the critical thinking measures better...

Presented here are kinematic equations for a six degree of freedom force-reflecting hand controller. The forward kinematics solution is developed and shown in simplified form. The Jacobian matrix, which uses terms from the forward kinematics solution, is derived. Both of these kinematic solutions require joint angle inputs. A calibration method is presented to determine the hand controller joint angles given the respective potentiometer readings. The kinematic relationship describing the...

The increase in our night fighting capability is a recognition that the various threats to the United States will be operating at night. Fighting at night is not new, but until recently our tactical air forces were ineffective at it for many reasons. The human element must also be integrated into the effectiveness...

In recent operations, Regional Combatant Commanders (RCCs) have been tasked with new challenges in providing for the treatment, care, and accountability of detainees. Included in this tasking is the responsibility to insure detainees have the latitude to exercise their religious faith. These new challenges in relationship to religious support include understanding the boundaries set in the law of...

The report details insertion loss measurements from multiple types of hearing protection devices in order to examine the nonlinearity of insertion loss. Tests were conducted in continuous noise from 55 to 130 decibels (dB) and impulsive noise from 110 to 170 dB peak sound pressure levels. Results show that predictive models for the protective capacity of hearing protection should account for variability in insertion loss, depending on the incident sound pressure level.

This study sought to combine FCM analysis of DNA with a proliferation-associated antigen widely used in immunocytology, Ki-67. This antigen is expressed in the nucleus of proliferating cells throughout the cell cycle, but not in nonproliferating cells. Existing methods for simultaneous staining of DNA and Ki-67 are unreliable. Therefore, our efforts were directed to developing a satisfactory staining technique. Major problems in the American workforce are absenteeism, tardiness, disorganization, off-task behavior, and limited teamwork. Attacking such problems by promoting effective work habits in schools should be an educational priority, with teachers, counselors, and school psychologists all playing a role in the process. Scores on a vocabulary test given at the beginning of two semesters in a large entry-level course predicted performance on multiple-choice exams more strongly than pre-course knowledge and critical thinking. Words on the vocabulary instrument were derived from multiple-choice exam items in the course. Although commonly used in the course, these words were not specific to the technical content of the course. Students took the vocabulary instrument at the beginning and end of the semester, with...
