Computers have the potential of creating new barriers and widening the gap between disabled and able-bodied people, because computers are extending the capabilities of non-handicapped individuals at a greater rate than for the handicapped. Access to standard computers and standard software must be provided to handicapped individuals by either modifying the software, which is prohibitively expensive, or by providing transparent access via a keyboard emulator or tactile and voice devices. The...

The New York State Child Care Coordinating Council recently released "Investing in New York. An Economic Analysis of the Early Care and Education Sector". This report is based on New York City specific information and data provided in their report and focuses on the economic impact of the early care and education sector in New York City. To most consumers, taxpayers, and political leaders, child care means a vital service for families and a meaningful experience for children. However,...

This paper summarizes a new methodology to design sequential non-diagonal QFT controllers for multi-input multi-output MIMO systems with uncertainty, which is a central issue in UAV control systems. It also demonstrates the feasibility of that methodology to control the position and attitude of a 6x6 MIMO spacecraft with large flexible appendages. The last part of the paper introduces a new practical methodology to design robust controllers that work under a switching mechanism, going beyond...

In the design of SPUR, a high-performance multiprocessor workstation, the need for large snooping caches suggests a new approach to virtual address translation. By performing this translation in each processor's virtual cache, the need for separate translation lookaside buffers is eliminated. Trace-driven simulations show that normal cache behavior is only minimally effected, and that unless an extremely large and complex TLB were built, using a separate device would actually reduce system...

This document describes how to incorporate multiple SUN Interface Boards into an Intel iWarp parallel processing array. The described procedure was originally developed at Carnegie-Mellon University, and was applied to a 64-cell iWarp array at NUWC/NL. The addition of multiple SIBs significantly improves the input/output capacity of the array.

This programmer's guide is intended to supplement the user's guide (AD-B007 214). The purpose of Phase 1 is to assemble most of the data and to check it for consistency and completeness. Phase 2 makes further checks on linkages and network integrity. Phase 2 prepares lists of names, student demands, trainee source lists and resource lists. Phase 3 resolves the trainee demands into classes and determines the amount of resources used by simulating the training system. Phase 4 computes the amount...

Mixed numeric and character arrays can be read into or read out to formatted or comma delimited ASCII files. Alternatively a bulk mode input facility allows for rapid direct data entry, or data can be examined and edited cell-by-cell in the usual way. Columns, rows or blocks of data can be highlighted in a chosen color, shadowed, moved or copied. In addition...

A computer program was written for the HP 9845 and the HP 9816 to calculate the directivity index directly from the beam pattern. A graphics tablet and stylus is used to digitize data points used to compute the directivity index. Graphical output is produced on a printer and plotter. This program was developed to enable the user to digitally input beam pattern data points into a computer and calculate the directivity index from this data. It eliminates the slow and monotonous task of visually...

Chaosnet is a local network, that is, a system for communication among a group of computers located within about 1000 meters of each other. Originally developed by the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory as the internal communications medium of the Lisp Machine system, it has since come to be used to link a variety of machines around MIT and elsewhere. This memo describes both the hardware and software protocols. It is intended to be the definitive documentation for Chaosnet. (Author)

This paper describes a chip for performing the 2-D (two-dimensional) convolution in signal and image processing. The chip, based on a systolic design, consists of essentially only one type of simple cells, which are mesh-interconnected in a regular and modular way, and achieves high performance through extensive concurrent and pipelined use of these cells. Denoting by u the cycle time of the basic cell, the chip allows convolving a kxk window with an nxn image in O(sq m)(u/k) time, using a...

An algebraic method for the analytical determination of an expression for the reaction coordinate in an arbitrary potential energy surface is presented. The method is applied to the thionyl imide - thiazyl S hydroxide isomerization reaction. The extent to which the method leads only to required reaction coordinate is dependent upon the manner in which the potential energy surface is sampled to obtain input data for the calculations. The fundamental efficiency of adaptive algorithms is analyzed. It is found that noise in the adaptive weights increases with convergence speed. This causes loss in mean-square-error performance. Efficiency is considered from the point of view of misadjustment versus speed of convergence. A new version of the LMS algorithm based on Newton's method is analyzed and shown to make maximally efficient use of real-time input data. The performance of this algorithm is not affected by eigenvalue...

This document considers the problem of control of a beam which is moving in the x-y plane. It extends from x=0 to x=L. The left end at x=0 is clamped to an actuator which moves the beam along the v-axis. The control input is the force u(t) in y direction. While moving, the beam may vibrate. Let z(t) denote the displacement of the left from y=0, and w(t,x), the displacement of the beam from the line y=z(t) at position x and time t. Suppose a position sensor is place on the beam and the sensing...

We present analytical results for the steady-state signal and phase-conjugate fields interacting with smoothly varying nondepleted pump waves in a nearly degenerate four-wave-mixing geometry. Signal depletion is retained in the equations and we study the effect that detuning on the input signal from the degenerate pump amplitudes has on the reflected conjugate wave and the transmitted signal wave. A general result is derived for the appearance of spontaneous amplification under weak...
