tiJ^M eplNGto murder the old skin-flint!"
■"^J^ Paul Crcs^wcll reached ihis decision in his
rninda^tong ti^ie before he actually got^around to
carryirtg'it out, -.

*'He*s eighty ytars old, miserly, bed-rid'den and
Useless'*, Raul continued to himself; "And, ungen-
erous with his only s^n'', he added, with a touch
of ^clf^righteousncss. ' "^ ^ '<

" l*aul was over forty, debt-ridden and greedy.
His creditors were pressing him;" his father, had
Paul asked for help, would only have refused ir,
' "It's time that I began to live", reflected Paul.

^'^^T^ime 'that I came ihto the inheritance \vhieh is
- really mine — time to dispose of the old man — once

■ and for all!"

Once Jie had decided to murder his fathrr, P^ul,
like ail good murderers, prepared himself well m^
advance. Knowing that his father was addicted to
the use of sleeping tablets* and kept a supply al-
ways at hand, Paul procured a supply of simijar
tablets m a distant city. These he p<ninded to a
powder and carried always with him in a medicine
bottle. - .

"Ready for the day!" he murmured, as he parted
the bottle, in his pocket.

Paul lived with his father on the ourskirts of a
suburb, from, which he drove to his work in rht
city every day. The two men lived alone, attended
only by an old woman who came ui the morning
and J^ft in the evening, IT.c old Cresswell manse
stood in a lonely place; there were no inconvenient
neighbors.

As Paul was about to leave for work on the morn-
ing of the murder, his father, querulous as usual,
called him.'

"Stop in a drug store and have my prescHprion
re-filled, will you Paul:", whined the old man,

"Certainly, father!" replied Paul, His "heart
leaped as he took the prcscripriOn from his father.

"Tm stopping off ;it a cocktail party alter \\ork*\
added Paul. "I'll be a littlt- laic gt-tnn^ honu-T'

"Cocktail pHrty)*\ griuited the old niiin, di^v-
iJSaragingly. "Well, I dou'i nt'cd the prtscriptioii in
a harry, anyway."

"I'll bring it to you at dinner time, father",
promised Paul.

VX^is is itr^ he told himself. "Everything is

perfect for it! Today's ihc day— for NIURDER!" .

Paul was delighted. \\tHn, upon filling the pre-
.scription in the city, he saw that it w'as a hlmy,
mifk-like liquid. His plan was ready to hand. He
took his medicine bottle, half-iilled with powdered
sleeping tablets, and filled it with milk/ This he
replaced in one packet. The bottle contaifiing the
prescription went in aq^other pocket/ - '-'-^". ^'

^*

After work, Paul drove to the Lasslters cocktail
|iarry, a scant mi!e from his home, Paul parked
his new car in a prominent spot, where it would
be seen by any guests entering or leaving. 1 hank-
ing his stars that his hosts were wealthy and cursed
with a rambling^ old-fashioned house, Paul en-
tered, greeted hi.s host and hostess, and made a
point of speaking to everyone in sight. Half an
hour later, he disappeared unobtrusively. He ^ould
be gone for twenty minutes .without being missed.
Leaving the house by the rear entrance, unseen,
he cut across the fields, dark in the winter -evening.
It took him eight minutes to get to^his father's
house. ' - "

r J

r.ntering, Tie ran to tTie old man's room,

"I lere*s your prescription, father", he said.

Wouldn't yoLi like a dose fight now:'* ~'

"^'HiatV \vhat it's ft>r isii't it?" replied the old

man^ testily. i ' . ■■ ' '

b I

Paul was renio\'ing the stopper from the bottle
when the old man rasped,

"Don't forget to shake it, you ]d:oTl"

Paul shook the niedicme vigorously. He was
about tn pnur the nulkv hquid nUo a glass when
he said suddenly:

"1 think 1 hear the telephonel" " . .

Smce the old man was deaf, he confined himself
to saying, simply: .,

**Answcr it, rhcn!"

Pau!. obeying, left the room with the bottle of,
medicine and the ijlass. ' - ' ''

Once iuitsidi.' the r'loni, Paul took the mixture ■

L " ^

iA sk-L'ping rjhk'Ts and milk from his pocket, pomed

h;iH tIic contemns iiuo ilie glass, and replaced the

horrk' in his p<icket. 'Ihen h^ put the ftiedicine

boctk, un-opened,' in another pocket. He returned ^

- to his father's room with a glass containing the

filmy liquid. ■'.-...' ^

bottie'', Paul assured hims&U.

. "Who was it?" aslied his father,

V'Wrong number", murmured Paul. Uis father,
took the gla^fs greedily, as he took everything, and
finished tx at one swallow. In less than a minute,
he lay baek and closed his eyes- Death would come
shortly, very (juietly, and Ai'ould need no further
assistance from Paul;,

He took t)ie bottle containing the prescription,
wiped it carefully,' and placed it on the bedside
tabic. Then he has^tenedback to the cocktail party.
His watch told hini that he had been gone less than
twenty mintites; his conversation with the other
guests told him that it was assumed that he had
not been absent from the parry.

It was ahiiost two'houTs later wherrhe remem-

r

bered, with a shock, that he had made a mistake,
although not an irretrievable one. He should never
have left the medicine behind him! But as lonj; as
he was the first one to enter the ohl man^s room,
all would be well!

Paul thank<^d his hosts for a pleasant-eveniug,

climbed into his car and drove home. His father

w&s dead, in the exact position in which he had left

him- ' '- ^" ' - ..

" ''A sick old man!" thought PauI.,'^No coroner's

jyry could bring in^a verdict other than suicide —

eSpeciallj' since he ^vas known to have sleeping
tablets in his pos^ejisionf"

Going to the telephone. Panl dialed hurriedly.
. *'Dr. Griswokir' he asked. **j*aul CresswelL Tve
jusi come hojuc and found my father dead! You'll
come at once? Good!" I Ic hung up. ^

"An old country quack," he thought happily,
"and js stupid as- they come!"

Griswold arrived within (en minutes. He ex-
amined the body of the old man, sniffed at the
medicine and held it up to the light.

'*!& anything wrong with that medicine, sir?"
asked Paul.

■ "lt*s the prescription 1 gave him, all righf'\ re-
plied Griswold. '*\Vhen did you have it re-filled?"

"*Today in the city", replied Paul.

"And when did you bring it to him?'* asked
Griswold. . ■

. "Actuallyjl iliihrr",s:iid I'ai^d. "I carried, it ahoiir
in my pocket ;d I il:!)'- AtriT wink, I went to ihe
Lassiivrs' cockiad party, where I stayed lor a
couple of hours. 1 hen I drtnc home with chc pre-
scription, and arrived here to hnd him dead. Na-
turally, he didn!^, ^akc any of that niedicinc, be-
cause it wasn^t here. He probably becsme morose
and took sleeping tablets'", Paul hazarded.

"He was killed by an overdose of steeping tab-
lets!" adnnttcd Griswold. "I understand you to
say that yoa haven't been" bomtN^.all, dajJ^rUHtil
about Hftccn minutes ago?" he addti^;A^i^?^- -

^That^s ri^ht. Doctor", said PauL..; ^^r''""

"Alii] you carried this prescription in ydur poc-
ket all <iay, until aboOt fifteen mi;iutes ago,^ In
fact, you Jrove home with it from th© cocktail
party?"

"Certainly!" Paul replied teslily,'**Is there any-
Thing wrong in that?*' - . ■

"I'm afraid there is, sir"> said the doctor. '.'Look
here!" _ -. .:

\\'ith thuEnb and forefinger he held the. bottle
up before PauFs eyes. TRk medicine was solid white
at the bottom, clear as water on top.

"Had you carried this about all day with you
until a few niinutc^s ago, this medicine would have
bccji quite thoroughly shaken up. As you see, it is
now settled. It takes two houri> for this niedicinc
to soiclu, Mr. Cresswdl, although you tell me that
you carried ic about with you all day, placiitg it on
this table only fifieen minutes ago."

**Wh-what's \^ rong with that?" gasped PauL

*'Had you carried it about with you all day, it
M'ould still be shaken up!" replied the doctor. "You
force me to conclude, by your own statements, that
for some reason this medicine was plac«d on this
table ar [east'n\o hours ago! Because of this dis-
crep-mcy in your story, sir, I must call the p^licel"

Dr^ Griswold went intp the next room, where
I'aul heard him dialing. ' K.' .

"Hello!" Police Department? This is Dr, Gris-
wold. Please send a man to the Cresswell house

ri;:ht away. There's been a murder!"

Ar the last word, Paul slumped to the bed on
which his father's bodv lav dead.

"Gris\votd knows!" he thought. "The police will
come . . . they*ll ask thousands of questions • . .
soon they'll know, too!"

P-uiI knew that he was at the beginningof the
ttail that Itads to the condemned cell. He had
planned the perfect murder; he had failed. '

''No!" thought Paul. "1 haven't failed com-
pIctL'lyl I cau still escape!"

Fumbling in his pocket, he brought out the bottle
siill half iillud with the solution of sleeping pills
jjid milk — ^the Mjlution that had so etfe'ctively
dis[>osed of his tjihcf.

Qtiickly, he raised it to his lips and drank.

When Dr. Griswold entered, with the police,
Paul and his father were side by side tti death.
