QUILLAUMO FERMI was a sor-
cerer — but people of 16th century
Florence did not fear him. On the con-
trary, they reverenced him, because he
used his magical arts for their good.
But there was one person who hated
him — Baroni, the moneylender. He hated

him because the old sorcerer cortdemned
'him for the usurious rales of interest he
charged—had, in fact, used his sorcery to
enter Baroni's home and secure evidence
of his illegal practices. The evidence had
been handed over to the authorities, who
had arrested the olfender, fining him
heavily for usury. Guillaumo Fermi was
lauded on every side for his act — but he
wasn't satisfied. Baroni, he said, was a
man of evil who would go on stealing
till the end of his day£, and therefore the
sorcerer was determined never to rest until
Baroni was jailed.

Small wonder that Baroni hated him
— and Baroni's haired was a thing to
fear. AVithin him there burned a lust
for revenge. And within a few days, the
whispers spread throughout Florence.
Guiltaumo Fermi had disappeared! In-
vestigation proved that this was a fact,
and that quantities of fresh blood had
seeped into the flooring of his bedroom.
What other conclusion that murder — and
what other suspect than Baroni? Specially
when a large and .heavy cleaver with a
peculiarly-nicked blade, found in Baroni's
home, bore unmrstakable traces of b'ood.
Baroni didn't deny it. but produced the
body of a ho^ he had just slaughtered,
claiming that this accounted for the blood.
Yes, he admitted coolly, he had haled
die sorcerer — what about it? How can
you prove a murder without a body — let
alone pm il on him?

It was true, and the matter might have
rested there — except for a strange paper
which was found at thai time among
Guillaumo Fermi's effects. "It shall come

to pass ihat I <Jied b}^ violence^** it read,
"but mjj dead flesh shall speak '" Ictlers
of flamCt <xnd crj? out the name of him
mho struck '"c down!" What did it
mean? Nobody knew — except that this
was further evidence of the sorcerer's
supernatural power. If he had been able
to foresee his own death, who knew but
that his magic might make the rest of his
prediction come true?

People wondered — then gave up won-
dering, and the case was forgotten. Then»
suddenly, a myiterious fire burned the
sorcerer's old bcwse to the ground. Then
another fire damaged Baroni's home. An
old oak was blasted by flames — and the
mysterious conflagrations broke out in
several other quarters. And nowhere was
there a reason for the fire! A supernatural
agency was at work, it was felt — and then
somebody recalled the old sorcerer's
prophesy. ''Afjj dead flesh shall speak '"
letters of flame,** it had said^-couid there
be a connection? In an effort to find out,
the pblice dug under the ashes of Cuil"
laumo Fermi's house — and uncovered
the remnants of his severed h^^d- The
earth under the old oak yielded his arms,
and various parts of his body were dis-
covered beneath the site of every strange
fire. It ended with his torso being un-
earthed under the flooring of Baroni's
home.

The letters of flame had sookcn — had
cried aloud from beyond the gates of
death! Taken into custody. Baroni still
protested his innocence — until his cleaver
was brought forth in evidence against
him. When it was demonstrated conclu-
sively that its peculiarly-notched blade
matched perfectly the brutal scars in the
segments of dead flesh that had once been
Guillaumo Fermi, the case was complete.
And so it was that Baroni died scream-
ing on the block — his guilty deed pro-
claimed in fire!

Well! It looks as .if the haU is bulging
with enthusiastic mcmhers of our fan dub —
all loyal supporters of yours and our favorite
comics magazine — '*0u( o\ The Nighl"! All
gathered to hear our short, impromptu talk
on sapcrstUion and terror. All set? Okay —
listen lo what we've got to say, and if you
don't agree, speak up — weMI be glad to gel
your letters!

Superstition is terror — a blind fear of un-
known forces- And like all blind, unreasoning
fears, it can be destructive. When it saddles
one's life, we have a good example of the
damage that ignorance can cause- It should
be eradicated — there are no two ways about
it. This attitude on our part may occasion
surprise in many quarters. *'Oon't you make
a itving out of superstition?" may be the
question- We have a prompt answer for it.
No, we don't make our profits from actual
^Hef in the creatures of the unknown — but
through the sheer entertainment which we
provide in publishing tense, challenging
stories, which, stthough their background
frequently deals with the supernatural, have
as their sole purpose to thrill and entertain.
We don't for one moment claim that zombies,
VMnpires and vere wolves really exist — but as
long as imagination can conjure up such tense
Mid wonderful lale^, let us by all means bring
them to you^ our readers! i ,

Thrilling and imaginative stories — that's
what "OiU of The Ni^hC* has always brought
yftu-^and will continue to do! Always, we
will be on the alert to feature only the best
in exciting narrative. And here*s news that
may interest you! We\e conducted, our own
tittle private survey into just what you, the
reader, would like to see in future issues.
And we've decided to include examples of
the shocker-ending type oF story, wherein
suspense builds lo'a dramatic pitch, and a
terrific surprise finish brings you right out
of your seats! Walch this magazine for out-
standing examples of this great story trend
— and meanwhile, send in your votes nn the
fine traditional types of stories which this
present issue features. What do you think

of TAc Terror of The LabyritUli^ — a tense
tale of a monster that rose out of the ancient
. legends which enshrouded it? Then, for a
change of pace, we offer "The Professor anjl
The Pixie^ — a gay spook story that^ll thrill
as it amuses! Thin, there's The Fantastic
Fan,*^ an absorbing and challenging yarn
that packs a supernatural kick— from start
lo finish! We think they all add up into a
banner issue, but what do you think? Ad-
dress your letter to The Editor, "Out of The
NighC 45 We^t 45th Street, New York 36,
N, Y- Meanwhile, let*s sec what some of our
other readers think!

Dear Editor:-

IVe just finished reading '<3ut of The
Night,' and I think it's great! Oh, if
only ive could have more magazines like
this — with stories such as you carry!
Some of my recent favorites were 'The
Amazing Ray* and 'Process of Etimina^
tioH^' I*ve been one of your fans for a
long time, and like your magazine best
of all the supernaturals on the stands.
Thrilling — exciting — what more could
I ask?

■ — Purcell Kendall, Baltimore, Md.**

"Dear Editor:-

It was by accident that I happened
to pick up itiy first copy of 'Out of The
Night/ and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It's far better and more exciting than
others IVe read in the same field. Keep
up the good workt

— Mrs. Mary Lowe, Los Animas, Colo."

"I>ear Editor:-

I like spooky stories — and that's why
I like 'Out of The NightP Your pic-
tures are beautifully drawn, and some-
times seem to be almost alive. And your
^rriters sure have got imagination 1
That's what makes yours the best mag-
azine out! Congratulations!
