Introduction

This directory is part of a program developed by the Mon-
tana Renewable Resources Bureau of the Energy Division to
provide the public with a current guide to renewable energy-
related services and information available in the state. Ser-
vices and suppliers listed in the directory completed an ap-
plication form which had been distributed statewide to
businesses engaged in alternative energy use. Inclusion in it
is not to be construed as an endorsement of the service or
equipment mentioned.

The directory is arranged by energy sources; in each
energy category contractors are listed by the service they of-
fer. A section of consumer information is included, to assist
in planning the purchase of equipment and installation ser-
vices.

Consumer Information

If you are considering the purchase of a renewable energy
system, exercise care in your decisions. Consider your investment
in the same way you would regard buying a car or a major appliance.
Your first job is to acquaint yourself with how the system works.
You will probably want to look at systems that are already in opera-
tion. Then shop around, checking with several suppliers or in-
stallers before making the final decision. If you need engineering
help, choose your consultant carefully.

Supplier/Installer

Before you sign a contract with a supplier or installer, check the
firm's track record. How many systems have they installed? Do any
members of the firm have heating, plumbing, or engineering ex-
perience? Have they received formal training from the manufacturer
on how to install the system? If not, will the manufacturer have any
control over the installation process?

Costs/Repairs

Be sure to obtain a cost estimate in writing. Find out how much of
the cost is for the system itself, and how much is estimated for in-
stallation. Also, inquire whether any regular maintenance will be re-
quired, and if so, how much it will add to the initial cost. See if the
installer will offer you a service contract. If the installer does not
perform repairs, find out who will, and check to find out whether the
manufacturer offers a complete supply of parts.

When shopping for any system that uses renewable energy, try to
find out about the past performances of both the product itself and
the installer. Try to obtain a list of previous buyers of the system
you are considering and check with some of them to see if it lived
up to its advertising.

Warranties

When examining the warranty be sure to find out:

A. Is it a full or limited warranty? If it is limited, find out what
is covered and what is not.

B. What responsibilities will you have to keep the warranty cur-
rent? What must you do to file a warranty claim?

C. How long will the warranty last? Long-term warranties are
appealing, but some may be misleading. Be wary of extended
guarantees or promises which appear unrealistic; make sure
the company you are dealing with is financially able to back
them up.

Before any system is installed, be sure your installer checks local
building and zoning regulations. Also, find out whether you will gain
any tax advantages from owning such a system; you may be eligible
for a reduction or exemption on sales, income or property taxes.
Finally, make sure that your system is covered by your home in-
surance policy.
