CARNIVOROUS PLANT NEWSLETTER

SPECIAL PROJECT SUPPLEMENT NO. 1 (1974)

WORLD CARNIVOROUS PLANT LIST.

With this issue we begin a comprehensive check list of the carnivorous plants of the world.
In addition to the preferred species name, the list will include geographic distribution
notations and Important synonyms. Early experience with the CFN seed and plant exchange
was frought with problems of nomenclature and synonymy. Seeking relief we turned to
Index Kewensls and summarized all of Its supplements to obtain a list of the "valid"
species and applicable synonyms. This list was Inadequate. Index Kewensls Is a
librarian'3 attempt to provide some order In the literature of plant.© by listing a
source In which a plant name first appeared. There Is no attempt by the authors of
Index Kewensls to correct errors of the taxonomist or to referee legitimate argument.

Using the compilation of Index Kewensls as a base point, Bob Ziemer and Joe Mazrlmas
began to search the literature for reasonably definitive treatments of CP genera. In some
cases, there was a recent and comprehensive monograph, such as Casper’s 1966 treatment
of Plngulcula . Peter Taylor has done an admirable Job on the extensive and complicated
Utrlcularla . In other cases, such as with Drosora, no recent comprehensive work has been
published. In these cases, we have combined a number of regional studies. In all cases,
we will cite the literature and our other sources used to compile the check list for each
genus.

There will still bo Inevitable errors and legitimate debate associated with such an under¬
taking, Indeed, comments and discussion are axpeoted and Invited. These check lists are
by no means the final word In the taxonomy and nomenclature of CP, but we feel they fairly
represent "the state of the art" In most cases. New llteraturo appears regularly on cyto-
taxcnomlc and ecological studies with live specimens from the field rather than the classic
reliance on dried and pressed herbarium specimens studies, Kondo's excellent work on the
differentiation of Utrlcularla cornuta and U. ,1 uncea 13 a good example of this more per¬
spective and definite© approach. Vie believe discussion and debate are healthy and hope
the check lists can be used as starting point In Identifying and clarifying areas of
taxonomic confusion. In the meantime, we believe these lists will be useful to our readers.

Soma very small and/or as yet poorly understood genera such as Plonaea, Polypompholyx and
Hellamphora are not Included In the lists.

Very little definitive work has been done on Genllsea St, Hil,, a taxonomlcally difficult
genus. Most herbarium specimens are poorly preserved due to the delicate nature of the
plant, and furthermore herbaria are usually Incomplete, Taylor has observed that many of
the speoles are polymorphic, and this factor along with tho wide distribution of the genus
has led to too many described species. This check list is the result of Peter Taylor’s
published verk from South America and Africa along with his current thoughts on the genus.

This genus was the subject of a recent thesis by Sidney McDaniel while at Florida State
University. McDaniel's nomenclature was used the base for species and natural hybrid names
used in this listj Bell's work was used for the srtifiolal hybrids 0 We have deviated from
these authors in that we recognize S_^ rubra ssp, Jones11 , S, purpurea ssp, purpurea and
S, purpurea ssp. venosa as useful designations. The listing of hybrids is perhaps more
extensive than need be, but we note that a horticultural hybrid name may occasionally be
used in the literature and the check list will thereby provide ready access to hybrid
composition and synonymy. We prefer the use of the fonsfclsi name to the horticultural name
in order to eliminate confusion. However, we realize that the formula names become quite
long for F2 and above hybrids and authors may prefer horticultural names for brevity.

The use of an X before the subgeneric portion of the horticultural name has been main¬
tained according to the literature.

P INGUICUL A

Th® g®nufii Plngulcula L. has been extensively studied within the past ten yemro by
S. Jortt Casper of the Inatitut fur Spozlelle Botanlk dor Prledfflrlch-Schlller-UnlTrorsltnt
Jena. Dr. Casper has published a number of monographs and shorter regional papers on the
genus P lngulowlsi from which wc have compiled this check ll3t. There are still a number of
areas of oosafcrovprsy. For example, Casper separated P, mao roc eras from vulga ris as a
distinct species, the former ranging from northern Californio through Alaska and to Japan,
the latter from northern Europe through 3Iberia, northern Alaska, Canada (And the north¬
eastern Unitor States. Tho only Interface Is In northwestern Camffitd® and Alssfcp, Other
taxenomlcto prafer to combine the two Into Pj_ vulgarln .

A second area of dispute concerns the Mexican Plngulculas. McVaugh and Nickel( 1963 )
prefer to combine many of the species found In Mexico while Casper pr«fers to separate
thorn. We feel Casper presents a good argument for his decisions and wo have consistently
followed his approach in this check list.

In the preparation of this listing, we relieri upon the early work of two great botanists,

J. M. Macfarlane and B. H. Danser. This genus Is especially complex to decipher taxn-
nomically because of 1 ts polymorphous nature and the relftlvely few constant characters
within the species. As a result, the listing bulges with synonyms which %re tried our best
to record for you. Hybrids present even a greater problem since much of the time, the same
cross made on different occasions was given a different name, or names have been mixed and
various back and secondary crosses not pronerly recorded. Here, we relied on various
horticultural encyclopedias to give us the moat consistent Information. Finally, many of
the Japanese books and Journal papers yielded helpful clues,

The genus Utrlcularla L. has been the subject of exhaustive morphologic studies by eminent botanists for
many years. As a result, a large number of species have boon described In the literature. Until re¬
cently, objective taxonomic work on the genus has been wanting, primarily because of the Inadequacy
of the material available for study. Most of the specimens available In herbaria are dried and In
varying states of preservation and completeness.

This list was initially complied from Index Kewensls and Peter Taylor’s published work, including of
course errors In both, and subsequently revised by Taylor to express his current views on the genus.
However, It must be borne In mind that whereas Taylor has now virtually completed his studies of the
African and New World species, further studies on the Aslan and Australian species will Inevitably
entail some revision of the list. Some of the opinions now expressed regarding African and American
species are at variance with Taylor’s published work, representing yet unpublished revisions. In a fev?
cases, due to the absence of type material and Inadequate original descriptions, it Is not possible to
state that a name represents a good 3peclos or a synonym. In the list, these are Indicated by a query
(?) sign. In some difficult Aslan groups not yet sufficiently studied, names are referred to as aggregate
species followed by a ’sensu lato'(l.e. In the broad sense) Implying that It may eventually be possible
to recognize these entities as distinct In some rank or other.

One of the major stumbling blocks In producing this checklist was the lack of modern, worldwide systematic
review of the taxon relative to revision of numerous synonyms In the literature. For example, the
southern extension of the range for Drosera caplllarla and Intermedia from the United States into Brazil
Is still disputed by some taxonomists resulting in annoying confusion that vexes the amateur and pro¬
fessional botanist alike. As a result, we had to rely on regional flora manuals and rather ancient
treatises for our conceptions of some of the species described, and^in so doing we likely excluded
recently described species that may be valid. Our readers can help rectify the situation by informing
us of any new partial or total treatments of the genus that we may have overlooked. Many of the sources
we searched are not included in the following list of references, only those used being listed.
