TEXT- BOOKS

Approved or Recommended
for use in

Elementary and Secondary
Schools

for the school year

1956-57

Issued by Authority of
THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION

This circular contains the list of books approved for
use in the school year 1956-57. In Schedules A and B the
books listed are approved for permissive use in Grades I
to X of the several types of schools. These schedules con-
tain the lists of text-books referred to in sections 36 and
38 of Part 4 of the Regulations, General Legislative Grants,
(0. Reg. 2/56) which read:

36. The board of a public or separate school shall
be paid a grant equal to the amount expended in the
preceding year for text-books approved under clause
zf of subsection 1 of section 12 of the Act, not
exceeding an amount computed by multiplying $3 by
the average daily attendance in grades I to X, both
inclusive, during the preceding year.

38. The board of a high, continuation or voca-
tional school shall be paid a grant equal to the
amount expended in the preceding year for text-
books approved under clause zf of subsection 1 of
section 12 of the Act, not exceeding an amount com-
puted by multiplying $3 by the average daily atten-
dance of pupils in grades IX and X during the pre-
ceding year, but excluding from the computation
those pupils attending from other high- or continua-
tion-school districts.

Schedule C contains the lists of books approved or
recommended for use in Grades XI and XII, and these books
are not to be included in claims for reimbursement grants.

The lists of texts approved for permissive use will
be enlarged from time to time as suitable books appear.
Wherever possible books of Canadian origin and manufac-
ture will be chosen for these lists. Local Coordinating
Committees are again invited to submit, through the office
of the Editor of Text-books, Department of Education,
suggestions for books to appear on supplementary lists later
in the year. If a Coordinating Committee desires to use a
text-book which does not appear on the approved list,
application may be made to the Minister to have it con-
sidered for approved listing.

TEXT- BOOKS

SCHEDULE A

Books Approved for Permissive Use

Pupils will not be required to buy these books. School
Boards will be required to provide readers and other text-
books selected from these approved lists in numbers suffi-
cient for the use of the pupils. Boards should make their
selections after consultation with teachers, principals and
inspectors concerned. In 1956 Boards will be reimbursed
for amounts expended in 1955 for text-books listed in this
Schedule A, permissive use of which has been approved,
up to a maximum of $3.00 per pupil of average daily
attendance in 1955 in Grades I-VIII. In ,1957 Boards will
be reimbursed for amounts expended in 1956 for text-books
listed in Schedule A up to a maximum of $3.00 per pupil
in average daily attendance in 1956 in Grades I-VIII.
