HAVENS Hospices was hoping to
raise £50,000 from the Southend
Marathon before the event was
postponed after the council felt
“unable to allow” temporary road
closures, writes MICHAEL COX.

The Run to Remember Marathon
on March 12 was set to raise
money for the charity which helps
people with life-limiting illnesses.

A charity spokesman said it had
set the £50,000 target to come
from entry fees and donations.

A council spokesman said that
Western Esplanade was the “key
sticking point”.

Havens’ chief executive Andy
Smith said the charity had “no
choice” but to postpone the
marathon.

He said a comprehensive risk
assessment, developed with the
council’s traffic management team
and the safety advisory group,
identified some roads along the
seafront needing to be closed dur¬
ing the morning of the race, to be
re-opened around lunchtime.

He commented: “Whilst there is

Marathon disappointment dashes
hospices’ hopes of raising £50,000

GOOD CAUSE: Last year’s Southend Half Marathon

precedent for road closures, the
council feels unable to allow this
on this occasion. We therefore
have no choice but to postpone the
marathon for this year.

“This is very disappointing, but
we are already working with the
council on an alternative plan for a
marathon in 2018. We are grateful
to each and every supporter who

signed up to run the Southend
Marathon.

“They will all be contacted and
offered a full refund, or a chance to
transfer to another event, such as
the Southend Half Marathon on
July 9, 2017. We are hugely sorry
to those who were looking for¬
ward to the marathon, and we
hope to welcome them past the

finishing line next year.’

Cllr Ann Holland, executive
councillor for culture, tourism and
the economy, said the council
hoped that the work put in by the
charity in preparing for the
marathon would be used in future.

She added: “We have been work¬
ing together to achieve this but in
this instance, we have had to bal¬
ance the very clear benefits of the
event with feedback from a num¬
ber of stakeholders.

“This unfortunately means that
we were unable to permit all the
necessary road closures this year.”

Judy Grocott, Havens’ events
manager, said: “We are truly sorry
that we have had to postpone this
event so close to the day and feel
awful that our runners will not get
to complete the race they’ve been
training for.”

‘EVIL PREDATOR PUT VICTIM THROUGH HORRENDOUS ORDEAL’

JAILED FOR
CHILD SEX

A SIXTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD man
has been jailed for “harrowing and
despicable” sexual offences
against children.

David Grant, of St Helen’s Road,
Westcliff, was sentenced to six
years imprisonment at Basildon
Crown Court on Friday, February
17 after admitting intentionally
touching a child under the age of
13, taking an indecent photograph
of a child, engaging in sexual
activity in the presence of a child
and possessing/making indecent

photographs of children.

Grant will serve six years in
prison with three further years on
extended licence for seven counts
of sexual assault of a child under
13, with sentences of between six
months and two years for other
charges to run concurrently.

A joint investigation by Essex
Police’s Online Investigation Team
and the force’s South Child Abuse
Investigation Team led to Grant’s
arrest in November 2016.

DC Joanne Watts, from Essex

Police’s Online Investigation Team,
said: “This is one of the most har¬
rowing cases I have investigated in
my career.

“Grant put his victim through a
horrendous ordeal and his impris¬
onment is testament to our hard
work and determination in bring¬
ing sex offenders to justice. Grant
will remain on the sex offenders’
register for the rest of his life and
the victim and family can now start
to move on knowing they are safe
from this evil predator.”

Ray of hope in post office fight

LEIGH Post Office could remain
open, according to a Lib Dem coun¬
cillor.

The Southend group released a
statement following a Labour party
protest.

Cllr Carole Mulroney said she
wanted to reassure residents that there
were “no plans” to close the branch in
Rectory Grove.

She added that the Post Office had
confirmed to her that there was no
closure programme and that a part¬
nership arrangement was being
explored.

She said: “The Post Office provides
a vital service, especially for the most
vulnerable so it is important to deal in
the facts and not play politics. My
focus is to ensure post office services
remain at the heart of Leigh and to
safeguard jobs.

“I fought hard when our library was

under threat and I will do so again if
the plan the Post Office puts forward
takes away services we currently
enjoy in Leigh.”

Her comments come after a protest
outside the branch on February 11
that included Southend Labour coun¬
cillors, as well as members of the

public and TV star Phill Jupitus.

Southend Labour had also created a
campaign page, SAVE Leigh-on-Sea
Post Office, on Facebook.

The Rectory Grove branch was one
of 37 directly managed branches
named by the Post Office in January
as ones that it is looking to franchise.

Q&A with Rochford and Southend East MP James Duddndge

MP confident of ousting
Commons Speaker

EXCLUSIVE

Reports by Michael Cox

southend@yellowad. co. uk
THE MP at the centre of a row over
Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK
has described some of the US
President’s views as “abhorrenf’.

Rochford and Southend East MP
James Duddridge spoke about the
President in the wake of his motion
of no confidence in the Speaker of
the House of Commons John
Bercow. Mr Bercow is opposed to
US President Donald Trump speak¬
ing in Westminster as part of a state
visit to the UK later this year.

Although Mr Duddridge criticised
Mr Bercow for “ignoring vital and
ancient traditions of impartiality” he
said that did not preclude him from
being opposed to Mr Trump.

Justifying his motion of no confi¬
dence in Mr Bercow, he said: “This is

STANCE: James Duddridge MP

not about President Trump, who I am
well aware has some views that many
people, including myself, find to be
abhorrent. This is about the Speaker
ignoring vital and ancient traditions
of impartiality.

“If we care about issues like Brexit,
we need to trust we have an impartial
Speaker who will treat all members
without bias. I no longer have that
confidence.”

Mr Bercow declined to comment.

ARE you in favour of President Trump
speaking in Westminster and, if so, why?
Is it more important to get the President’s
support for a post-Brexit Britain or to
challenge him on his policies?

It is a matter for the government to con¬
duct foreign affairs and it is frankly dan¬
gerous to have the Speaker, who is not an
accountable minister, talking on who
should and who should not come to our
country to address parliament.

When you become Speaker, you sit as an
independent MP and forfeit the right to
take part in debate and other parliamentary
activity such as signing early day motions.

This is because you become a servant of
the house.

You cannot silence ministers or even the
Prime Minister if those on the green
benches suspect you are doing it due to
bias.

The Speaker knew the rules when we
took the job on and prestige that it comes
with.

If he wants to express political views, he
can, but not from that chair.

He is a key part of our democracy and
cannot become a part of the political nar¬
rative.

Hundreds of members can talk about the
policies of President Trump and their ugli¬
ness or attraction, but the Speaker is not
one of them.

The comments made by the Speaker have
been praised by Labour MPs such as
Jeremy Corbyn. Is the attempt to remove
him a party political move? Is that ironic
bearing in mind that you are saying that
the Speaker breached his political impar¬
tiality?

This issue transcends politics. In fact it
transcends politics in a way that the
Speaker is meant to and this one has failed
to do. When I go to the chamber to raise
issues, such as question the Prime Minister
on knife crime as I have done recently, I
need to know that the house operates
under the same rules for each member due
to the impartial chairing that has seen the
House of Commons become the oldest and
grandest parliament in the world.

I have no confidence this is possible
under this Speaker.

Are you confident that you will achieve
the required support for your motion?

I would be surprised if the Speaker sees
how many MPs have lost confidence in
him and decides to try and stay.

His predecessor thought he could carry
on regardless of the views of so many in
the house, and we all know what happened
to him.

He had to go before debate even hap¬
pened.

It’s animal magic at
Sea-Life Adventure

A WHOLE new world of
wonder is on offer at Sea-
Life Adventure on Southend
seafront following a
£680,000 redevelopment.

The popular attraction has
virtually doubled in size in
just over five weeks and now
features new animal attrac¬
tions including penguins,
meerkats, otters and a royal
python.

To see the amazing
changes for yourself the cen¬
tre and the YA are giving
away FIVE family tickets,
each admitting two adults
and two children. Amazing
additions include a huge
tank to house some real
monsters of the sea - two
Asian short clawed otters
from Newquay Zoo, three

meerkats from Dundee’s
Caperdown Wildlife Centre,
and penguins from
Colchester Zoo, all of which
have been rescued or captive
bom and were overcrowded
in their old homes.

Sea-Life Adventure’s
director Lucy Hodge said:
“With more exhibits and
exciting animals than ever
before, we have been able to
create a vast array of brand
new interactive experiences,
such as a Tropical Rockpool,
so you’ll now be able to hold
the crabs and starfish, as
well as some exciting new
reptile and bug encounters.”

The redevelopment means
that Sea-Life Adventure,
which has joined the British
and Irish Association of

Zoos and Aquariums, can
engage more deeply in pro¬
moting and raising aware¬
ness of environmental con¬
servation and protecting ani¬
mals.

REGENERATION
for Shoeburyness

NEW homes, a nursery and a community hall
are set to be built in Shoeburyness after plans
were approved.

The buildings will be constructed on the site
of the Friars Community Centre and the former
Friars library and now-closed Renown Pupil
Referral Unit.

Planning permission was granted last week to
demolish and redevelop the former library and
referral unit, the existing car park and commu¬
nity hall in Centurion Close.

The regeneration of the brownfield site will be
carried out by the council’s development com¬
pany, PSP Southend FFP, and will include a new
home for Friars Centre Playgroup, based in the
current community centre.

A Southend Council spokesman said the new
nursery will create 24 new places and extend its
current 26 places from part-time to full-time -

ARTIST’S IMPRESSION: What the proposed
development could look like

this will be enabled after the council’s success¬
ful bid to the Department for Education for
around £330,000 in funding.

David Amess MP with the painting

Former mayor’s
portrait unveiled

A PORTRAIT of a former Southend Mayor has
been unveiled at Porter’s Lodge, the Mayor of
Southend’s official residence.

Beryl Scholfield, who died in 2002, was Mayor of
Southend between 1982 and 1983, and later award¬
ed Freedom of the Borough.

She was elected onto the council in 1965, and rep¬
resented Thorpe ward for more than 20 years.

Mayor of Southend, Cllr Judith McMahon attend¬
ed the unveiling of the portrait, along with Beryl’s
family and friends, current and former councillors
and Southend West MP Sir David Amess.

The portrait of Beryl was commissioned by her
family and was first located at the Cliffs Pavilion.

The counts related to
category A, B and C

‘Solutions’ revealed to
improve interchange

ESSEX County Council has unveiled
a multi-million pound scheme to
improve the Fairglen Interchange.

Both short and long-term proposals
have been released.

The interchange of the A130, A127
and A1245 links roads between towns
such as Basildon, Southend, Canvey
and Chelmsford.

Cllr Kevin Bentley, county council
deputy leader and cabinet member for
economic growth, infrastructure and

partnerships, said: “We know that the
Fairglen Interchange in its current
state is not working for our residents
and businesses during the rush hour.

“That is why we are being proactive
in putting forward solutions.”

Short-term plans include a new road
linking the A130 and A1245, widened
slip roads onto the Fairglen round¬
about and a three-lane roundabout at
Rayleigh Spur with traffic lights.

The long-term scheme would see an

underpass bypassing Rayleigh Spur
roundabout from the A130 towards the
A13 and Canvey, as well as an over¬
pass linking traffic from the Sadlers
Farm junction towards the Rayleigh
Spur up and onto the Southend bound
carriageway of the A127.

and-Roads/Highway-Schemes-and-

Trump will
get it right in
the end

I AM just an average person
that sometimes feels the need
to air my views on what is
going on in the world.

I am a regular watcher of the
news and cannot understand
why some of the so-called
“experts” talk such a load of
rubbish and seem to look for
fault in everything, believing
that their point of view is of
interest to us.

The critics of Donald Trump
need to hear what he is saying
rather than judge him for the
alleged past activities and
views he may have had.

He of course has a lot to
learn about diplomacy but let’s
consider the following.

He wants to put his country
first? That’s his job.

He will do anything to make
his country’s borders secure?
That’s his job.

He wants the American peo¬
ple to have full employment?
That’s his job.

He wants good relations with
Russia and all other countries?
Makes sense. He wants trade
deals that are best for
America? And on the issue of
torture. If you knew that the
torturing of a suspected terror¬
ist would stop a relation of
yours being beheaded would
you say yes to this act or no?

If yes, Trump is right and if
no, it means that you feel less
for the life of your family
member than for a terrorist.

I believe that Trump has

much to learn but will get it
right in the end.

Keith Little
Benfleet

MP is on his
own with
Speaker bid

“UNAVAILABLE for com¬
ment” is one of them as your
article illustrated when
Rochford and Southend East
MP, James Duddridge, failed
to comment about his support
for President Trump address¬
ing Parliament in his proposed
state visit.

Another one is “disregarding
public demonstrations/peti¬
tions.” Up to L85m people
signed a petition opposing
President Trump’s visit.
Dismissed.

Yet President Trump’s
racist/sexist/anti-
immigration/anti-refugee and
anti-Muslim views have been
blazoned across the world on
TV and social media for all to
see and hear.

There are also other games at
play: “hypocrisy”, being “eco¬
nomical with the truth” and
“saying one thing but doing
another”.

These include criticising the
Speaker of the House of
Commons for voting to
Remain in the EU, yet Theresa
May did the same; feeling
President Trump’s views merit
recognition and should be
heard in Parliament which,
clearly, many people do not
agree with.

Protests across this country.

the United States and others.

Also Mr Duddridge once
wrote to me: “Throughout our
history the United Kingdom
has stood up to defend our val¬
ues and our way of life.

“We can and must do it
again.”

Commendable, but if Mr
Duddridge includes his present
action as representing these
values, then this is a game we
shouldn’t play.

Review due
over foreign
aid giveaway

CLLR Ware-Lane (YA, Letters,
February 17) seems as if he is
dazed by some ideological
miasma.

The National Audit Office is
deeply critical of the alleged
insouciant manner in which
foreign aid is handed out with¬
out significant control.

Those of us who track such
affairs, know full well the level
of local corruption involved.

In 2015, magnanimous
Britain gave away:

Pakistan: £3 51.4m
Ethiopia: £334. Im
Nigeria: £253.5m
Sierra Leone: £213.8m
South Sudan: £205.2m
Syrian Arab Republic:
£20L6m

Tanzania: £ 199.7m
Afghanistan: £199.6m
Bangladesh: £157.5m
India: £ 150.4m
Amongst many others.

Surely, charity begins at

home? How can an apparently
caring and philanthropic soci¬
ety, simply stand aloof, when
many elderly, faced with the
choice of “heat or eat?”, will
expire this winter from
hypothermia, yet allow myopic
politicians to glibly throw
away such vast amounts of our
hard earned cash?

Personally, I cannot.

Unchartered
territory of
Brexit course

TONY Blair is correct that we
are now pursuing “Brexit at
any cost”.

It’s no contradiction to say
you accept the referendum
result but reserve the right to
change your mind when you
see the Brexit terms.

If you agreed to buy a new
house but discovered, prior to
exchanging contracts, that
there were problems with it,
you would obviously cancel
the deal. You wouldn’t proceed
anyway because the vendors
were a lovely couple and had
promised to leave the curtains.

I’ve no doubt millions voted
to leave the EU lock, stock
and barrel. But millions also
voted to leave the EU while

believing we would protect
trade and jobs by staying in
the Single Market and
Customs Union.

Boris Johnson says Blair
“insults the intelligence of the
British people”. This is from
the man who told us the NHS
would get an extra £3 50m if
we left the EU. That’s £3 50m
every single week.

Yes, Britain has become
great again. Yet we are the
only nation in the world that
has been tricked by a bus.

It is right that Theresa May
now negotiates the best possi¬
ble Brexit deal. But fast for¬
ward to 2019 (or possibly
later). What if the deal is very
unpopular with the public
because it seriously damages
the economy and jobs?

So close to the 2020 general
election, that puts May’s pre¬
miership in serious jeopardy if
she agrees the deal. What bet¬
ter way for May to get off the
hook than by putting the deal
to another referendum?

“The people voted to leave
the EU so it’s entirely reason¬
able for them to endorse the
deal”, I can hear May say.

You may think that’s all
speculation and wishful think¬
ing, and can’t happen because
Article 50 is irreversible. Who
knows? We are in unchartered
territory because Article 50
has never been triggered

before. If the EU and Britain
want to do a deal that leaves
Britain in the EU then it can,
regardless of Article 50. Any
deal, to leave or stay, needs the
endorsement of the European
Parliament and the other 27
national parliaments.

Two years ago no one would
have forecast the change we’ve
seen with Brexit and our new
best friend, Donald Trump. So
who can predict how the world
will look in another two years?

The effectiveness consultancy Benchmarketing have
analysed what happens when companies include press
advertising in their media mix.

They looked at 500 econometric models, across a
five-year period and discovered that adding newspapers
dramatically increases the return on investment of
other media.

Over half were service companies who saw the
effectiveness of their TV advertising double, ROI of their
overall campaigns treble and their online digital display
enjoy a four-fold increase.

Individual categories also saw impressive results.

Automotive campaigns clocked a 70% increase.

In travel, effectiveness trebled. In retail it leapt by
2.8 times. And most remarkable of all, in the financial
category, Benchmarketing uncovered an increase
of 5.7 times.

So, whatever business you are in, you should
be in the newspapers.

Oh what
a circus!

By Liz Wade

features@yellowad. co. uk

A MYSTICAL world of frozen beauty
and magical adventure will arrive
at Cliffs Pavilion next month.
Umbrella Productions’ new show,
Cirque Enchantment, kicked off its UK
tour in January, and will be providing
plenty of entertainment at the Southend
theatre on Saturday, March 25.

The concert-style cirque production
features stunning choreography,
breathtaking vocals and mesmerising
cirque performers.

The story focuses on a girl called
Scarlett with a big imagination as she
reads her enchanted storybook.

The circus in her mind comes to life,
live on stage, and what follows is an
adventure through good and evil, led
by the captivating vocals of Miss
Enchantra.

With an eclectic musical soundtrack
including current hits from One
Direction, Sia, Paloma Faith, Rihanna
and Beyonce, in addition to a mix of
classical, rock, dance and classic
favourites, it is a show like no other.

Creative director and writer, Stuart
Glover, who has produced entertain¬
ment in the USA, UK and Europe, said:
“Enchantment is a stunning new pro¬
duction with a modern contemporary
feel. Bringing something new to UK
Theatres.

“if you are a fan of pop music, dance
and circus then this is the show for you.
We want to fill those cold winter after¬
noons and evenings with some breath¬
taking magic.”

Up-and-coming pop vocalist, Paige
Brooklyn Cook, who was a soloist for

The Water Diviner’s Tale at The Royal
Albert Hall, and was support act to
Jessie J and JLS at the Madejski
Stadium in Reading, stars as Miss
Enchantra.

As the tour kicked off, Paige, who
trained at italia Conti Academy of
Theatre Arts from the age of 16, said:
“i am delighted to join the original
cast of Cirque Enchantment. What a
great way to kickstart 2017, with a
magical creative, colourful and
dynamic production.”

Cirque Enchantment is a stunning
production that will delight both i
adults and children.

Other enchanting performances on
offer at Cliffs Pavilion include Swan
Lake, performed by The Russian State
Ballet of Siberia on Sunday, February 26.

The greatest romantic ballet of all
time is brought to life by
Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforget¬
table score. From the impressive
splendour of the palace ballroom to
the moon-lit lake where swans glide
in perfect formation, this compelling
tale of tragic romance has it all.

From Odile, the temptress in black
tulle as she seduces the prince by
spinning with captivating precision, to
the spellbound purity of the swan
queen, Odette, as she flutters with
emotional intensity, the dual role of
Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most
unmissable technical challenges.

Accompanied by a live music perfor¬
mance by The Orchestra of the
Russian State Ballet, there will be two
chances to see Swan Lake, on
February 26, thanks to a matinee per¬
formance at 2pm and an evening
show at 5.30pm.

Swan Lake will also be performed at
Basildon’s Towngate Theatre on
Friday and Saturday, March 10 and
11, by Vienna Festival Ballet.

The evenings will bring to the
stage the world’s most popular bal- ‘f
lets and best known love story. It is
the ballet that captures like no
other the full range of human emo¬
tions - from hope to despair, ter¬
ror to tenderness, and melan¬
choly to ecstasy.

On Saturday, March 11, the
Vienna Festival Ballet will also be ,
staging a matinee performance
of Cinderella at Towngate ,
Theatre.

A downtrodden young girl, a glass

bine to make the perfect piece of
storytelling in this specially com¬
missioned score, created solely for
Vienna Festival Ballet by Chris

Music from some of Rossini’s
most famous operas, including La
Cenerentola, the Italian Girl in
Algiers, and Silken Ladder, add to
the magical fantasy world of the
ballet, Cinderella.

Vienna Festival Ballet was found¬

illustrious career.

Now in its 36th year of producing

remarkable success and performs
great classical ballets all over the

Its productions have all the ele¬

dancers include graduates from the
Royal Ballet School, British,
Australian and Italian soloists, and
guest stars from Vienna and South
Africa.

PATRIOTS DAY (15,133 mins)

D irector Peter Berg and
leading man Mark Wahiberg
previously collaborated on
the testosterone-fuelled action
thrillers Lone Survivor and
Deepwater Horizon.

They draw inspiration from
another harrowing true story of
heroism for this gripping race
against time.

Patriots Day introduces a fic¬
tional character into the heart of
real-life terrorism - the bombing
of the 2013 Boston marathon - to
pay rousing and sometimes
overblown tribute to the men and
women who risked their lives in
the name of justice.

The script’s queasy conflation of
fact and artistic licence runs the
risk of glamorizing the hunt for the
perpetrators.

We become completely
immersed in the investigation as it
gathers pace, culminating in a
shootout on the city streets.

Vehicles explode, hundreds of
bullets scythe through the air,
transforming a sleepy nook of
suburban Massachusetts into a
flaming, debris-strewn war zone.

It’s certainly a pulse-quickening,
edge-of-seat rendering of a
senseless act that made head¬
lines around the world.

On the morning of April 15,
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (Alex Wolff)
and his brother Tamerlan (Themo
Melikidze) head into Boston with
homemade bombs concealed in
rucksacks.

They move into the thick crowds
of spectators thronging the
marathon course, drop the bags
and move to safety before deto¬
nating the devices in quick suc¬
cession near the finish line.

“We’ve got to decide who’s run¬
ning this and we’ve got to decide
quickly,” Deval Patrick (Michael
Beach), the Governor of
Massachusetts, tells Boston
Police Commissioner Ed Davis
(John Goodman) and the assem¬
bled responders.

“It’s terrorism, we’ll take it!”
responds FBI Special Agent
Richard DesLauriers (Kevin
Bacon) as he discovers frag¬
ments of a bomb at the scene.

Sgt Tommy Saunders

(Wahiberg) and his wife Carol
(Michelle Monaghan), a registered
nurse, are on the front line during
the subsequent manhunt.

Their resolves are tested along
with Boston’s mayor Thomas
Menino (Vincent Curatola) and
other figures in public office
including Police Sergeant Jeffrey
Pugliese (JK Simmons).

Meanwhile, Dzhokhar and
Tamerlan steal a car, which they
intend to drive to New York to
carry out more atrocities.

Patriots Day seamlessly blends
footage shot by witnesses, who
were in Boston that day, with
grainy reconstructions to docu¬
ment events before the explo¬
sions up to the point that one of

the suspects is found hiding
inside a boat.

Berg’s bombastic approach to
action sequences sets pulses rac¬
ing and he effortlessly holds us in a
vice-like grip for more than two
hours, even if we know the chain of
events from news coverage.

Wahiberg portrays another
steadfast all-American hero, who
refuses to let anyone harm the
city he loves.

The voices of real-life survivors
and officers reverberate over the
end credits, hammering home the
true valour and sacrifice behind
the expensive Hollywood
pyrotechnics.

In Each Issue You'll Discover Simple Tips to
Help You Sell Your Home for More...

"What is an Energy Performance Certificate,
and do I need one?"

It's a legal requirement to have an EPC for your
home before you sell it. This can be arranged
through us at RV Hall & Co or directly with an EPC
provider.

What is an EPC? - An energy performance
certificate shows how energy efficient your
property is, grading it from A to G with A being
the highest rating. If you have a brand-new home,
it's likely to have a high rating. If you have an older
home, it's likely to be around D or E.

Your EPC will also list ways to improve the rating
- such as installing double glazing or loft, floor or
wall insulation - and give indicative costs.

How to get an EPC - If the property has been let or
sold since 1 October 2008 in England and Wales,
it should already have an EPC and this is valid for
10 years. If your property doesn't already have an
EPC, RV Hall & Co can point you in the right
direction of an accredited domestic energy
assessor to assess your property and produce the
certificate.

EPC costs - EPC costs can range from around £60
to £120. RV Hall & Co charge just £65 for an EPC.

Energy-saving advice on EPCs - EPCs show you
and the buyer how much they might save from
making greener home improvements, to include:

potential costs of heating, lighting and hot water
after improvements

total potential savings, and potential energy
performance rating after making improvements

recommended actions to take (such as increasing
loft insulation and draught proofing)

potential cost of these improvements, and typical
saving over a three-year period

If you'd like help in determining an accurate initial
marketing price for your property, please ask
Roger or Michelle at R V Hall & Co on 01 702
470044.

Connells

Spring is good news for
sellers, says Connells

Get your property on the nnarket now if you’re serious about selling, says
local estate agency Connells in Rayleigh. According to the branch, the spring
period is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year for searching for
property. As people shake off the cobwebs of winter and the weather gets
warmer, potential buyers will be out in force looking for a new home.

“Spring is a great time to sell,” says Charlotte Pestell, Senior Negotiator at
Connells Rayleigh “Not only are properties a lot more aesthetically pleasing in
the better weather, but increased appetite to move during the spring period
means sellers will have more prospective buyers competing to buy their
home making it more likely you will achieve the best price.”

Connells traditionally experiences a spike in buyer interest during the spring
period and, since 2014, has recorded on average 19%* more people
registering their interest in a new home each March compared to the previous
month. Connells also currently has nearly 12 buyers registered for each
property that comes onto the market.**

“We almost always see a rush of buyers entering the market in springtime,”
adds Charlotte “It seems that many feel inspired by the warmer weather and
longer days to start making plans for the future, including looking for a new
home. We’re advising home owners to get their property on the market now
and take advantage of the high demand for homes - sellers are in a strong
position to achieve a good price and a quick sale.”

To find out more about selling your property, the local market or to arrange a
free market appraisal, contact your local Connells branch on 01268 777767
or email rayleigh@connells.co.uk

New look for
Skoda Citi

By Stewart Smith

A NEW-LOOK Skoda
Citigo will be making its debut
at next month’s Geneva
Motor Show.

The new Citigo comes with
upgrades to the exterior
design including bonnet,
radiator grille and fog lights
with optional cornering
function, plus redesigned
15-inch alloy wheels.

The headlights are fitted
with LED daytime running
lights and the optional
cornering function lights up
the area the vehicle is turning
into on junctions, switching
on the left or right fog light
when turning at speeds of up
to 25 mph.

With the upgrade the interior

of the Citigo has been refined
and is more functional.

The instrument cluster
with speedo, rev
counter and fuel gauge
comes in a new
design while the
seats now come
with

integrated
headrests to
provide better
lateral support.

The radio and
mobile phone
functions can now
be operated from an
optional

multifunction leather
steering wheel and a
high-resolution
Maxi-DOT

display as well as light and rain

sensors
are also
optional.

Two

L.iree-cylinder petrol
engines will be available.

The entry-level engine is a
1.0-litre MPI petrol with
60bhp. From a stand¬
ing start, it
accelerates the
Citigo to 62
mph in 14.4
seconds,
reaches a
top speed
of 100 mph
and aver¬
ages
68.9mpg
on the
combined
cycle.

A higher
powered
75bhp
version
gives 0 to
62mph in
13.5

seconds, a top
speed of 107 mph and
is rated at 68.9mpg.

Skoda says the fuel figures
apply to models with a five-
speed manual gearbox and
with a start-stop system and
brake energy recovery.

The revised Citigo will be
available in S, SE and SE L
trim levels.

BLUES BEMOAN
REF’S DECISION

Football

Southend United 2
Northampton Town 2

Brian Jeeves reporting from
Roots Hall Stadium

SOUTHEND United dropped pre-
eious home Sky Bet League One
points as struggling Northampton
Town twiee fought baek in a pul¬
sating elash.

Blues onee again approaehed a
Roots Hall fixture in buoyant
mood. Memories of a potentially
damaging defeat at Millwall a
week previous had been largely
eradieated by a 2-0 win at Oxford
United three days later.

Boss Phil Brown kept he same
starting 11 to that at the Kassam
Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Northampton Town, now under
the guidanee of former Blues and
Spurs defender Justin Edinburgh,
had shown signs of improvement.

Until reeently, the Cobblers were
looking anxiously over their
shoulder at the League One drop
zone. However, baek-to-baek vie-
tories had lifted the gloom as they
looked to finish the eampaign with
a flourish.

In a rip-roaring opening period.
Blues eame elose to opening the
seoring when Mare-Antoine
Fortune nodded wide after
Anthony Wordsworth and Ben
Coker eombined down the left.

Northampton responded but
Matt Taylor’s effort was a whisker
away with Blues keeper Ted Smith
beaten.

Miehael Timlin was next to try
his luek, but Cobblers keeper
Adam Smith did well to hold on to
the ex-Swindon man’s low drive.
Meanwhile, Hiram Boateng fired
over as the sides traded blows.

Just before the 20-minute mark
Southend took the lead. Jermaine
MeGlashan was on hand to fire
home after both Cox and Fortune
failed to make a telling eontaet
with Coker’s low eentre.

Cox found Smith’s gloves as the
Blues looked to double their
advantage, but before they eould
make any further headway Mare
Riehards fired high into the eomer
of the host’s net to level the eon-
test. But the visitors’ joy was

short-lived. Within two minutes,
Cox was on hand to guide home
after Jason Demetriou’s initial
effort appeared to be flying wide
of the target.

Cox drew a smart save from
Cobblers stopper Smith as the
game eontinued to ebb and flow.

Shortly before the break
Northampton levelled again.

Taylor’s free-kiek eame baek off
the post and one-time Blues loa¬
nee, John-Joe O’Toole, was on
hand to bundle over the line.

Riehards eame elose as
Northampton started the seeond
period brightly. Southend seemed
subdued and a little off the paee.
MeGlashan and Timlin tried to
rally the frustrated home erowd as
the home side attaeked sporadieal-
ly but ineffeetively.

Brown threw on Nile Ranger and
Theo Robinson in a bid to stoke up
the home side’s flagging attaek,
with the latter teeing up Timlin,
who in turn found Smith’s midriff

Soon after, the Cobblers keeper
brilliantly tipped over from
Ranger after Demetriou had
pieked him out.

A eombination of Smith and
Zander Diamond thwarted Ranger,

while Anthony Wordsworth was
wayward as Blues began to probe
with greater intent.

In stoppage time, Robinson
seooped wide after Ranger nodded
into his path, but despite their
efforts, Northampton held firm for
a deserved share of the spoils.

Brown said after the game: “It
was two points dropped, but it
wasn’t for the want of trying. The
way we played in the first and see¬
ond half, I thought there was only
going to be one winner.

“Again I’m here bemoaning ref¬
erees’ deeisions, and the key deei-
sion where he gives a free-kiek on
the edge of the box with a minute
to go until half-time, I ean’t see
what he’s seen. If anything it’s a
free-kiek to us. He must be the
only guy in the stadium that has
seen a free-kiek ineident.

“If we are going to do anything
this season, we are going to have
to elimb that mountain ourselves.

“Nobody else is going to help us,
the referees are eertainly not going
to help us.

“We had a go in the seeond half,
no doubt about it. We had two or
three great ehanees at the end.

“Nile Ranger’s header and Nile

heading down to Theo Robinson,
it looks like he’s got a elear run on
goal. Then, Nile and Woody
[Anthony Wordsworth] got in the
way of eaeh other. Three good
ehanees to win the game.

“But it wouldn’t have been over.
Justin Edinburgh is a feisty lad
and his sides have good battling
qualities. I knew what was eom-
ing. They’ve got goals in their
team and we’ve got goals in our
team. It was 2-2 at half-time and
wasn’t a surprise to me.

“You were looking at two teams
in form. Justin has done a good
job sinee he’s gone in there and
turned it around. It looked like
they were playing with eonfidenee
for their manager. But so are our
lads and they are disappointed
after putting in the work rate,
effort and quality that they have,
but only got a point out of it.”

Goalseorer Cox, who beeame
the first Blues player to seore in
six sueeessive home games for 57
years, said: “It’s pleasing, but we
are a bit disappointed not to have
taken three points.”

On the free-kiek that led to
Northampton’s equaliser, Cox
said: “I’d been slapped in the head
so I didn’t see an^hing. I thought
that was a foul. I don’t know what
happened after that. Some of the
lads saw it at half-time and they
weren’t happy.”

Southend United are next in
League One aetion on Tuesday,
February 21 when they take on
Peterborough United at London
Road (7.45pm).

Coker, Anthony Wordsworth, Adam

Bingham holds nerve to win Weish Open

RELIEF: Stuart Bingham

STUART Bingham beat Judd
Trump 9-8 to win his first Welsh
Open and elaim a first ranking title
sinee the 2015 World
Championship.

The Basildon star, 40, took the
last two frames, sealing vietory
with a break of 55.

Bingham stormed into a 4-0 lead
but Trump fought baek to 5-3 by
taking the last frame of the after¬
noon session to move 7-6 and then
8-7 ahead in the evening.

But Bingham levelled and after
Trump missed an early opportunity
in the deeider, it was the ex-world
ehampion who prevailed.

Bingham’s wife Miehelle sur¬
prised him by travelling to the
Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff with
baby Mamie to see him win the
£70,000 prize.

On his offieial website, Bingham
said: “This title was right up there
for me and not too far behind the
world ehampionships to be fair.

After winning tournaments in eon-
seeutive seasons it was hard not to
win one for a while, espeeially as I
had been going so elose too.

“So it was also a relief in Cardiff
And having Miehelle and the baby
there made it extra speeial.

“I’d spoken to her on the phone
the night before and she said it was
going to be too mueh trouble to
make it. But when we went for the
break at 5-3, she was there and that
was a niee surprise.”

Non-league round-up

struggling Grays
stun Billericay

By Brian Jeeves

GRAYS Athletie produced the performance of the
day with a stunning 1-0 Ryman League Premier
Division victory over free-scoring Billericay Town
at Mill Field.

Grays went into the game bottom of the table.
However, Kwabena Osei’s last-minute strike saw
the hosts grab three points against their in-form
Essex neighbours.

Despite the win. Grays remain at the foot of the
table, three points behind fellow stmgglers Canvey
Island, who went down 3-1 to Folkestone Invicta at
Park Lane. Miles Cornwell grabbed a brace for the
visitors, with Ian Draycott also on target. The Gulls’
consolation came via a Liam Friend own goal.

In Ryman League Division One North, Femi
Akinwande hit both goals as leaders Maldon &
Tiptree won 2-1 at Ware. Brightlingsea Regent are
in second place after Aaron Condon (2) and a
Tommy Spillane own goal helped overcome Aveley.
Russell Mahon’s late own goal offered a crumb of
comfort for the beaten visitors.

Jed Chouman’s second half goal ensured AFC
Hornchurch a 1-0 success over Soham Town Rangers
at Bridge Avenue, while Ronnie Winn (2), Perry
Dunn and Michael Pindy helped Thurrock to an
emphatic 4-0 triumph over Bury Town. Michael
Spencer hit the only goal as Waltham Abbey edged
out Brentwood Town at Capershotts, while Anthony
McDonald and Chris Benjamin were on target as
Haringey Borough won by two goals to one at
Witham Town. Nathan Koranteng responded for the
hosts with a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Bowers & Pitsea staged their big derby with Tilbury
on Friday evening and it proved to be a popular deci¬
sion for the hosts who romped to a 4-0 win with David
Knight (2), Martyn Stokes and Brad Warner on target
in front of a crowd of 257.

It wasn’t such a successful weekend for Romford,
who despite an Ayodeji Olukoga goal, crashed 4-1
at Norwich United, and Heybridge Swifts who lost
2-1 at home to VCD Athletic. Reece Grant with the
Swifts’ goal.

In the National League, Braintree Town went down
2-0 at promotion-chasing Macclesfield Town.
Connor Jennings and Chris Holroyd with the home
side’s goals. Meanwhile, Dagenham & Redbridge’s
hopes were hit as Jordan Preston scored twice for
Guiseley, who won 2-1 at Victoria Road. Ollie
Hawkins reduced the arrears in stoppage time, but it
proved too little too late.

In the National South, Chelmsford City produced a
superb performance to win 1-0 at fellow play-off
hopefuls Dartford. Anthony Church grabbed the all-
important goal for the Clarets during the second peri¬
od in front of a bumper 1,385 crowd at Princes Park.

Lyle Della-Verde and Steve Cawley hit the goals as
Concord Rangers enjoyed a 2-1 victory at Truro City,
and there was another 2-1 scoreline at Rookery Hill,
where East Thurrock United saw off Hampton &
Richmond Borough thanks to goals from Reece
Harris and Tom Wraight.

There was a marvellous contest between Enfield
1893 and Redbridge in the Essex Senior League -
hosts Enfield eventually winning an eight-goal
thriller 5-3. West Essex won 4-3 at Hullbridge
Sports, while the goals flowed at the Mile End
Stadium, where Barking also won 5-3 against
Sporting Bengal United.

Barkingside edged out Haringey & Waltham 3-2,
while Ilford were 2-0 winners at Eton Manor. FC
Romania saw off London Bari 3-0 and Waltham
Forest won by the only goal against Burnham
Ramblers.

The match at Southchurch Park between Southend
Manor and Basildon United ended 1-1.

Selected action from the ProKit UK Essex
Olympian League saw Manford Way see off Harold
Wood Athletic 4-2.

In Division One, Basildon Town were 2-1 win¬
ners at Great Baddow. FC Hamlets hit five without
reply against Benfleet in Division Two, while
Shoebury Town were 6-0 Division Three winners
over Debden Sports.

You can make a BIG difference just
by understanding your symptoms

With over 12,000 GP appointments wasted every month across mid and south Essex, many
people miss out on seeing the doctor when they really need to. By understanding how to
treat less serious conditions, you can help prevent appointments going to waste.

Coughs

TYPICALLY LAST 2 - 3 WEEKS

What can I do to treat myself?

Simple home remedies, such as sucking lozenges or 'honey and lemon', can help
to relieve many symptoms. Just add freshly squeezed lemon juice and a teaspoon
of honey to a mug of hot water. It also helps to drink 6-9 glasses of water in a
day. If you're a smoker, reducing the amount you smoke or stopping altogether
will not only improve your cough but benefit your overall health.

Speak to your pharmacist or doctor’s surgery
if you experience any of the following:

• Your cough persists beyond 3 weeks

• Coughing up blood

• You experience chest or shoulder pain

• Difficulty breathing/breathlessness

• A high temperature above 39°C

• Weight loss for no reason over six weeks or longer

• Your voice becomes hoarse for longer than 3 weeks

• Any lumps or new swellings in the neck or above your collarbone

• Symptoms start after you've choked on something

Antibiotics:

Did you know?

Antibiotics are not an effective
treatment for symptoms such as a
cough, cold, sore throat or nasal
congestion. These symptoms are
caused by viruses and antibiotics only
work against bacteria. If you take
antibiotics unnecessarily then they
may not work when you need them
to treat a bacterial infection.

Colds

TYPICALLY LAST 1 - 2 WEEKS

What can I do to treat myself?

Get plenty of rest until you're well enough to return to your usual activities.
Drink lots of fluids to replace those lost from sweating and try to eat at least
five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.

Speak to your pharmacist or doctor’s surgery
if you experience any of the following:

• Symptoms persisting beyond 3 weeks

• A high temperature above 39°C

• Feeling confused or disorientated

• Sharp pains in your chest or difficulty breathing

• Swelling of the glands in your neck and/or armpits

• You cough up blood-stained phlegm (thick mucus)

Cold remedies can be bought cheaply
from supermarkets and chemists, giving
doctors more time to treat people who
are really poorly.

Sore Throat

TYPICALLY LASTS 1 WEEK

What can I do to treat myself?

You can relieve symptoms by eating cool, soft food and by sucking on
lozenges, ice cubes, ice lollies or hard sweets. Try to drink 6 - 9 glasses
of water every day, particularly if you have a fever. Gargling warm salty
water can also help reduce swelling and avoiding smoky environments
can reduce irritation.

Nasal Congestion

TYPICALLY LASTS 2V2 WEEKS

What can I do to treat myself?

There are several things you can do to help ease your symptoms
including washing out the nose with a stream of saline solution
(available from your pharmacy) and applying a warm face pack. Drink
plenty of fluids to replace those you've lost and try to eat at least five
portions of fruit and vegetables every day.

Allergies

Symptoms of an allergic reaction usually develop within
a few minutes of being exposed to something you're allergic
to, although occasionally they can develop gradually over a
few hours. Your pharmacist can help determine whether the
symptoms are caused by an allergy or another condition, and
will advise if you need to see your GP. Very occasionally, a
severe reaction called anaphylaxis can occur.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis

• Swelling of the throat and mouth

• Difficulty breathing

• Lightheadedness

• Confusion

• Blue skin or lips

• Collapsing and losing consciousness

Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency that requires
immediate treatment. Call NHS 111 for urgent
treatment or 999 in emergencies
