FAMILY OF MISSING 64-YEAR-OLD MAKE EMOTIONAL NEW APPEAL

HAVE YOU IPn
SEEN THIS M'
WOMAN?

By Michael Cox

southend@yellowad. co. uk

THE FAMILY of a woman from
Southend, who has been missing
for more than three weeks, have
made a renewed appeal to find her.

Patricia Finnic, 64, had been to
see a friend in Riviera Drive in
Southchurch on May 11, and left
there sometime between 12.45pm
and 1.15pm.

She was reported missing that
evening after failing to come
home, and has not been in contact
with any family or friends since.

Her husband Gordon, who has
been married to Patricia for 45
years, made an emotional plea to
his wife during a press conference
at Southend Police Station on
Thursday, June 1.

He was accompanied by his son
Matthew, daughter Ruth and
grandson Ashley.

Gordon said: “Pat, if you are see¬
ing this or hearing it of your own
free will, I am desperately anxious
to know at the very least that you
are safe and well.

“I urge you to please contact
your mother, me or the police so
that you can return safely and we

CONCERNED FAMILY: From left, Ashley Dalton, Ruth Finnie,
Gordon Finnie and Matthew Finnie launch the new appeal

can work out any issues there may
be that are troubling you.”

He added: “Pat has been missing
for three weeks and we really
are very, very anxious for her well¬
being.

“Immediate family and friends
all know and they are worried sick
and are missing her badly.”

The family members were joined
by Detective Inspector Jasmine
Frost, one of the officers involved
in the investigation to locate
Patricia.

DI Frost explained that police
had made a number of enquiries to
date.

She said: “Patricia’s never been
missing before. She does take
blood pressure medication and we
don’t believe she has access to that
at the moment which means we are
concerned about her long-term
health condition.”

She said the case was “very
unusual” for a number of reasons,
adding: “Firstly, Patricia’s age. Our
general missing person enquiries
tend to be people that are a lot
younger, so her age is unusual.

“The fact she has been missing
since May 11 and we’ve had no
verifiable sightings of her is also
quite unusual.

“Somebody who was a lot
younger would probably have
footprints in various different
social media, which would give us

extra lines of enquiry and, obvi¬
ously, that’s something Patricia
doesn’t have.”

A CCTV image shows a woman
believed to be Patricia walking
past Pembridge Court and towards
Belle Vue Road at about 1.45pm
on the day she went missing.

Patricia does not drive, so she
may be using buses and trains to
get around.

She volunteers in her communi¬
ty, including at a befriending ser¬
vice for elderly people.

She has links to the Angus area
of Scotland, and DI Frost revealed
that officers have been working
closely with Police Scotland.

Some of Patricia’s favourite
places to visit are Dedham,
Flatford, Brighton, Birmingham
and Cornwall.

Her favourite places to visit
locally include Hockley Woods,
Priory Park, Southchurch Hall
Park and Churchill Gardens.

Patricia is 5ft bins, of medium
build, with straight auburn-
coloured hair. She also sometimes
wears glasses.

She was last seen wearing a full-
length quilted black coat with a
hood, a pink top, navy trousers and
black shoes.

Anyone who has seen her or has
any information on her where¬
abouts is asked to call Southend
police station on 101.

Volunteers
scoop top
accolade

VOLUNTARY groups from
Rayleigh and Westcliff are to
receive The Queen’s Award for
Voluntary Services, the highest
award a voluntary group can
receive in the UK.

Rayleigh Baptist Church Carers
Cafe and Crossing Boundaries are
among charities, social enterprises
and voluntary groups to receive
the award this year across the UK.

The award recognises the work
they do in their communities.

The groups will receive the
award from Lord Petre, Lord
Lieutenant of Essex, later this
summer.

He was thrilled that the two
groups had won the award.

He said: “Volunteers at Rayleigh
Baptist Church Carers Cafe
Ministries Team offer effective
support and respite to carers and
the support it extends to the carers
and their loved ones is exception¬
al. Carers can access help on the
telephone as well as attend three
different sessions.

“The group makes a significant
contribution to improving the
mental health of adult carers
because the cafe and its satellite
services combat loneliness and
isolation.”

Georgina Biggs, cafe leader,
said: “Being awarded the Queen’s
Award for Voluntary Service is a
great encouragement to the team
and gives credibility to the work
we do, enabling carers to come
forward with confidence.”

Crossing Boundaries is made up
of church and non-church mem¬
bers who came together following
a meeting at Earls Hall Baptist
Church in Westcliff They help
those in need to access statutory
services.

Lord Petre said: “They provide
invaluable advice and exceptional
community support and continue
to build strong relationships with
Southend Social Care.”

Police in appeal
to trace driver

POLICE are appealing for wit¬
nesses after a man suffered mul¬
tiple injuries in a road collision.

The man, 35, was crossing
Sutton Road, Southend, shortly
after 9am on Thursday, June 1,
when a dark coloured hatchback
collided with him close to the
Co-Op and Spar shops.

The driver of the vehicle failed
to stop at the scene.

An Essex Police spokesman
said the make and model of the
car are unknown, and the car
was travelling in the direction of
the Greyhound retail park.

PC Fay Firmin, of the Chigwell
Road Policing Unit, said: “An
innocent person has suffered
FAILED TO STOP: CCTV footage of the serious injuries, including a bro-

man police want to speak to ken leg. Someone must have

seen something at that point in
the morning - we are urging
anyone who can help to contact
us.

“To fail to stop like this is
extremely cowardly, and it is of
paramount importance the per¬
son responsible for inflicting
such injuries on the victim is
caught.”

The victim was taken to
Southend Hospital for treatment
and is in a stable condition.

Police have now released a
CCTV image of a man they
would like to speak to in connec¬
tion with the collision.

Anyone with information or
who recognises the man is asked
to contact PC Firmin at Chigwell
Police Station on 101.

Belfairs Woodland Centre
to host open air concert

BELFAIRS Woodland Centre
is playing host to its first open-
air concert later this month.

The centre is holding the event
on Saturday, June 17, and will
be raising money on the day for
the Essex Wildlife Trust, which
runs it.

Alison Askwith, the centre’s
assistant manager, said that
four groups will be performing
- The Show Choir, The Hoy
Shanty Crew, Gaudeamus
chamber choir and members of
Southend Symphony

Orchestra.

Alison said: “The idea is local
musicians playing to local peo¬
ple in a community facility.”

The centre is also having a

fundraiser towards the concert
where people can buy a musical
note for £5 and write a loved’s
one name on to be displayed on
a memory tree inside the centre.

Alison said that Southend
Symphony Orchestra would be
dedicating their performance to
the names on the tree.

cial stall for people to buy picnic
food.

The event marks Volunteers’ Week, an

are the life blood of SAVS and this is our
chance to say thank you and show them

Foul play: Some walkers are allowing their dogs to soil Two Tree

ESSEX Wildlife Trust has
appealed for people to take
care of Two Tree Island Nature
Reserve after claiming it was
being “misused” by some dog
walkers.

A trust spokesman said visi¬
tors should be allowed to enjoy
walking around the island,
“without abandoned dog foul
tainting their day”.

The spokesperson said:
“Essex Wildlife Trust’s Two
Tree Island Nature Reserve is

home to a diverse array of
wildlife and nature, but is sadly
being misused by a few dog
walkers.

“Leaving dog foul is not only
anti-social behaviour, it can
lead to negative impacts on the
ecology of our reserves, espe¬
cially on native flora.

“Flicking dog faeces else¬
where does not remove the
problem, it will only move it
elsewhere, and leaving a full
poo bag hanging on a branch is

Island Nature Reserve

no benefit for anyone either.

“There needs to be a balance
between protecting wildlife,
and everyone, including fami¬
lies with young children, being
able to enjoy the reserve.”

The spokesman added that
the trust was thankful to
responsible dog owners who
visit Two Tree Island on a daily
basis, and asked people to clear
up after their dogs to help
wildlife flourish and allow the
public to enjoy their visit.

EVENTS took place last week
as schools broke up for half-
term holidays.

At the Victoria Shopping
Centre in Southend a treasure
hunt was held to raise money
for Havens Hospices.

The event, run by the Little
Havens Hospice team, which
supports children and young

adults with life-limiting ill¬
nesses, saw families tasked
with finding characters includ¬
ing Captain Jack Sparrow from
the Pirates of the Caribbean
films.

They were asked to donate to
£2 to Havens, which incorpo¬
rates Fair Havens and Little
Havens, and got the chance to

Captain Jack Sparr

win a goody bag.

Children also took part in
Forest Friday at Belfairs
Woodland Centre in Leigh.

They had the opportunity to
enjoy crafts, activities and

games both indoors and out¬
doors.

The event, for children aged
seven and under, required a £6
donation to the Essex Wildlife
Trust, which runs Belfairs.

CHALLENGE: Rochford Running
Club members are preparing for
the HARP24

RUNNERS are taking part
in a 24-hour relay to raise
money for a Southend
homeless charity.

Beginner runners at
Rochford Running Club are
joining HARP24 at Westcliff
Rugby Club on June 24-25.

They took part in a 12-
week course and completed
their first 5km run in April.

HARP24 sees participants
run as many laps of a four-
mile course through Cherry
Orchard, as they can in 24
hours. They can compete as

a team of up to eight, or
solo, and the club has five
mixed teams of eight run¬
ners and two duos.

The club has a fundraising
curry night this month and
runners are collecting spon¬
sorship.

Lisa Walton, community
and individual fundraiser at
HARP, said: “It is fantastic
to have so much support
from Rochford Running
Club and we are thrilled to
welcome a new team of run¬
ners to HARP24 this year.”

Concentrate
on getting a
good Brexit

IT is becoming impossible to
decide where you place your X
on June 8. But one thing is for
sure is that all parties must
deliver a Brexit.

Leaving Europe means we
make our own laws, control
our own finances and control
our borders. A bad government
cannot blame Europe and will
be fully responsible for all
decisions made by them.

This will make our future
decision on who to vote for
very easy as it did before
Europe had control. Leaving
Europe will give back full con¬
trol to our Government, who¬
ever they are, so the only deci¬
sion we need to make is which
party will deliver the best deal
on Brexit.

Brexit is the big issue and
we want the best deal. Other
issues such as defence, NHS,
education, immigration,
employment, etc, are grey
areas as you cannot believe
most of what the parties say.

Whichever party gets in we
will be leaving Europe so this
is why Brexit is the only issue
we need to consider and which
party will get the best deal.

If still not sure who to vote
for there are secondary issues
to consider. The Labour Party
promises big improvements to
the NHS and confused figures
for policing. They also
promise to weaken our nation¬
al defences and reading
between the lines they will

keep the borders open raising
the terrorist risk.

Almost all terrorist attacks
are carried out by visitors from
other countries or their off¬
spring. This is not a racist
remark as I believe that the
vast majority of immigrants
and their families are good
people and should be accepted
and respected as our equals.

The Tories seem to want to
hit the pensioners without real¬
ising that affects every person
in the UK that survives to pen¬
sion age, whatever that may be
in the future.

At present we can blame
Europe for many of our
Government’s failures so we
need to remove this excuse
once and for all so we are able
to judge their actions as sole
responsible representatives of
the people.

At future elections we can
base our votes on existing
policies, but right now we
need to support the winning
party for the sake of a good
deal.

Let’s get out of Europe with
a good deal for all concerned.

Keith Little
Benfleet

Shocking
attitude to
homeless

WHAT a disgraceful and inhu¬
man attitude was displayed by
Fred Nicholson (Southend YA,
June 2) regarding homeless
people in Southend.

Does he really think these
people choose to be homeless

and live on the streets? Does
he not consider what misfor¬
tunes may have caused their
predicament?

There are many reasons why
someone can end up in this
position - failed relationships,
poor physical health, mental
health problems, bereavement,
financial problems.

Why does he assume all
homeless people are drunks
and drug addicts? Does he not
realise that alcoholism is an
illness not a choice of
lifestyle? What happened to
caring, humanity and compas¬
sion?

I am surprised he suggested
the BHS Building on High
Street as a place to accommo¬
date the homeless.

With his attitude I would
have thought he would have
advocated for Auschwitz to be
reopened where he would
probably fit in nicely.

K. Knight
Basildon

Realism is
not being
defeatist

WHEN replying to a letter it’s
always a good idea to have
actually read it first and not
one of your own invention that
says what you want it to say.

To be crystal clear, I am
against England (not Britain,
please) bowing down to any¬
one.

The left bows down to
Europe, the right to America.
To hell with both.

Stiff upper lips? Stiff back¬

bones? That’s not patriotism,
it’s arthritis. Sclerosis of the
imagination.

Realism is not defeatism. To
imagine that the world loves us
and is lining up to do deals is
wishful thinking.

The only think likely to be
done is us as the rest of the
world buys us up.

Is this what we’ve come to -
a nation of spivs?

In 1939, England was isolat¬
ed, divided, ill-informed and
ill-prepared - and Europe was
dominated by Germany and
Russia. No change there then.

It’s amusing to hear the intol¬
erant whining about intoler¬
ance. Their charges rebound
on themselves, and just as we
can’t tell the difference
between democracy and
majority rule, so we can’t tell a
sellers’ from a buyers’ market.

Germany makes cars. We
like to buy German cars. Who
has whom in their pocket?

We can go elsewhere. Not if
we want German cars we
can’t. They can easily go else¬
where.

Why do we imagine we can
play hard ball and Europe
can’t or has no right to? This is
foolish pride.

As for the 60 per cent figure
for goods and services import¬
ed from Europe, that’s the one
bandied about by press and
politicians, take it up with

them. If I’m wrong, so are
they - and they’re the ones in
charge.

K. Knight owes me a big
apology.

Paul Divine
Westcliff

Reward to
catch these
cruel thugs

I WAS totally and utterly
appalled to read the article in
the Yellow Advertiser (June 2)
about the two kittens found
with “horrific” injuries in
Gunners Park.

What sort of low life scum
(you really can’t dignify them
% calling them human beings)
would inflict injuries like this
on poor defenceless kittens? It
really beggars belief

I would like to see the same
treatment inflicted on them
and see how they like it.

I have rescued many cats in
my life and I absolutely
deplore senseless and mindless
cruelty to animals of any
description.

I am so incensed about this
that I am prepared to put my
money where my mouth is and
offer a reward of £200 for
information leading to the
prosecution of whoever did

this. We really need to make
people realise that there is no
need for cruelty to animals
when they can take them to the
RSPCA or animal charities for
re-homing.

yVlrs Carol Shindler
Shoeburyness

Police are
out of touch
locally

MANY people criticise the
police for not doing their jobs
properly, but as we all know
local police numbers have
been reduced to such an extent
that they are now practically
non existent.

Local police meetings have
been reduced to the point that
they have virtually finished.

That connection with local
police has been lost and the
police are now completely out
of touch with residents and our
streets. In recent months we
have seen an dramatic increase
in burglaries in our area.

I believe that if we don’t
invest more money in our police
force, crime and lawlessness
will eventually become ram¬
pant, even in our relatively low
crime area of Hockley.

Alan James
Hockley

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

★★★★★

Thank you Scott

“I am most grateful to Scott for making me the most comfortable denture I have ever had I don’t even
have to use a fixodent now. I came over from France and he fitted me in during my visit here whilst
seeing my family.” - John James

★★★★★

Excellent service

“I visited Scott as I had broken my dentures. He repaired them there and then at a very reasonable
price. I took the opportunity to discuss my options with him as my dentures had never been
comfortable. After advice with no pressure from Scott I decided to have new dentures. Best decision
ever. I now have a great comfortable set. I would highlyrecommend Scott to anyone.

A very professional service throughout.”

CONVERTING your loft for storage is one
of the easiest conversions you can do - and
one of the cheapest.

Loft conversions are great storage solutions
for all of your unwanted and even wanted
goods, or a great place to keep items out of
sight for a few months or even years.

If you are planning a family, you may need
the extra storage room to put your baby
clothes in, or you may want to put some of
your current possessions into the loft to clear
some space.

Using loft space as storage is also a popular
option if you have a commercial business
downstairs and need more room to store work
belongings, giving your business the space to
expand without the need to move.

Loftman’s luxury storage rooms can
include the strengthening of the loft joists,
flooring, lighting, access, roof insulation,
stud walls, windows and ready to skim plas¬
terboard throughout. It can also install access
doors into the eaves - offering valuable stor¬
age space on both sides of the room.

Depending on what you want to store in
your loft will determine how much work
needs to be done to create the extra loft
space.

Luxury storage rooms are surprisingly
affordable at just a fraction of the cost of a
standard loft conversion.

Lor example, a loft conversion on an aver¬
age sized two bedroom terrace house costs
just £3,999, including supply and fitting. To
book a free, no-obligation survey, call now
on 07973 672227.

Trishade Blinds come
to The Blinding Concern

NEW Trishade Blinds are now available at The
Blinding Concern along with a range of other
revolutionary blind systems.

The Trishade Blinds, which are partly Venetian
and partly roller blinds, are available in manual

company’s Basildon factory, you are sure of a
“perfect fif’.

You can now install the system in your whole
conservatory, in any colour of your choice, for

GRAN

DEBUT

FOR

MATT

By Liz Wade

features@yellowad. co. uk

B arking-born Matt Barkley
makes his professional UK
stage debut in Gangsta
Granny at Cliffs Pavilion next
month.

Birmingham Stage Company, the
acclaimed producers of Horrible
Histories and George’s Marvellous
Medicine, will bring the touring
production of David Walliams’s
popular children’s book to the
Southend theatre from Thursday
to Sunday, July 6-9.

Matt completed his studies at
Mountview Academy of Theatre
Arts in London and graduated with
a BA in acting.

Prior to that. Matt, who lives in
Braintree, studied screen acting at
the New York Film Academy,
where he worked and expanded

his knowledge of the industry.

His favourite role at drama
school was Zhen in
Grandfathers by Irish play¬
wright Rory Mullarkey,
physically demanding
play which followed
eight teenage sol¬
diers at boot camp.

He is appearing in
the ensemble along¬
side the cabbage¬
crunching, crimina
mastermind, Gangsta
Granny, and is also the
male understudy in the
production.

It is Friday night and Ben
knows that means only
one thing - staying with debuT:
Granny.

There will be cabbage soup,
cabbage pie and cabbage cake
and Ben knows one thing for sure

it is going to be so boring.

But what he does not know is
that Granny has a secret
and Friday nights are
about: to get more
exciting than he could
ever imagine, as he
embarks on the
adventure of a life¬
time with his very
own Gangsta
Granny.

As Gangsta
Granny says: “All
you can do in this life
is follow your dreams.
Otherwise you’re just
wasting your time.”
Walliams, one of the
Matt Barkley judges on Britain’s Got
Talent TV show and cre¬
ator of comedy series Little Britain
and Big School is now the best¬
selling author for children in the

country. He began his publishing
career at Harper Collins in 2008
with debut novel. The Boy in the
Dress, followed by Mr Stink and
Billionaire Boy.

In 2011, he published Gangsta
Granny, which went straight to
number one in the children’s book
charts. It was shortlisted for both
The Red House Children’s Book
Award and the Roald Dahl Funny
Prize.

A TV version was broadcast on
BBC1 at Christmas in 2013.

The all-star cast included
Walliams, as well as Julia
McKenzie, Miranda Hart, Rob
Brydon, Joanna Lumley and
Robbie Williams.

Gangsta Granny has been trans¬
lated into 30 languages.

Walliams said before the tour: “I
am over the moon that Gangsta
Granny is coming to the stage.

“It’s the most popular of all my
books and I am sure this produc¬
tion by the brilliant Birmingham
Stage Company will delight not
just children but their parents and
of course grandparents.”

After seeing the opening night in
Birmingham, he added: “What a
fantastic show. And so much bet¬
ter than the book.”

Gilly Tompkins plays Gangsta
Granny, with Ashley Cousins as
Ben, Rachel Stanley is mum, Ben
Martin, dad, Devesh Kishore is
Raj, Liz Garland plays the
Matron/Oueen, and Richard
James is the doctor. Sophie Gibbs
joins Matt in the ensemble and is
also the female understudy.

Gangsta Granny is a must for
everyone from five to 105.

Annabelle Wallis as Jenny Halsey

THE MUMMY (15,110 mins)

A lmost a decade after the
release of the hammy fantasy
adventure The Mummy: Tomb
Of The Dragon Emperor, director Alex
Kurtzman attempts to reboot the hor¬
ror franchise with this action-packed
thriller set in the present day, which
positions Tom Cruise at the centre of
the special effects-laden destruction.

Cruise plays tomb raider Nick
Morton, who travels to Egypt with
plucky archaeologist Jenny Halsey
(Annabelle Wallis) to retrieve an
ancient artefact.

In the process, Nick accidentally
unearths the resting place of
Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella),
who was buried alive thousands of
years ago after she murdered King
Menehptre (Selva Rasalingam) in
order to seize the throne.

Nick and a team of military spe- ,
cialists transport Ahmanet’s sar¬
cophagus back to the UK. En route,
the airplane is brought down by a
flock of crows. While Jenny man¬
ages to escape the fireball by para- J
chute, Nick is trapped inside. |
Miraculously, he survives the
inferno without a scratch and
enigmatic scientist Dr Henry
Jekyll (Russell Crowe) reveals
that Nick has been chosen
by a resurrected Ahmanet to
help her destroy the modern
world and refashion it as her
new dominion.

In Each Issue You1l Discover Simple Tips
to Help You Sell Your Home for More...

"I've found a property to buy, but which type of
survey is best for me?"

If your purchase requires a mortgage, the lender
will arrange a basic valuation of the property. This
is only for their benefit and just confirms the
property exists as collateral. As the buyer, you
should have your own survey, to check for
problems.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RIGS)
offers three levels of survey for residential property:

The Condition Report - If you're buying a
conventional property built from common building
materials and in reasonable condition, this report
offers clear 'traffic light' ratings of the condition of
the building; lists any problems that require
attention; provides a summary of the risks to the
condition of the building; flags guarantees,
planning and building control issues.

The HomeBuyer Report - If you require more detail
this report includes: An extensive inspection,
opinion on 'Market Value', advice on repairs and
maintenance, insurance reinstatement figure,
problems that may affect value, issues to investigate
to prevent serious damage or dangerous
conditions, legal issues to address before
completing your conveyancing, and information on
the location, local environment, etc.

The Building Survey - Formerly known as a full
structural survey, is the most detailed survey, and is
appropriate if you are buying a large, old or run¬
down property. It includes: A thorough inspection
and detailed report, a description of visible defects
and potential problems caused by hidden flaws, a
summary of repair options and dangers of leaving
things as they are, details of serious risks and
dangerous conditions.

If you'd like help in determining an accurate initial
marketing price for your property, please ask Roger
or Michelle at R V Hall & Co on 0l 702 470044.

Fit your child’s seat correctly

By Stewart Smith

NEW research clainns that
nnore than eight in 10 dri¬
vers are putting children’s
safety at risk by failing to fit
child car seats correctly.

The investigation, carried
out in conjunction with
Leicestershire Police, Child
Seat Safety Ltd and What
Car? magazine, found that
only 15 per cent of the
child car seats assessed
were fitted correctly and
were appropriate to the
children being carried in
them.

Of 85 seats analysed at
random, in 51 cars only 31
were fitted correctly and,
when the suitability and fit¬
ting of the child were taken
into account, that figure
dropped to just 13.

Three-quarters of the
incorrectly fitted seats
inspected were able to be
rectified on site but four
seats - five per cent of the
sample - were condemned.

with two being removed
immediately and replaced
before onward travel was
permitted.

While car seats with Isofix
attachments were all cor¬
rectly installed, those that
used the seatbelt as a
restraint caused the most
problems.

The most common issue
was with the harness or
seatbelt restraining the seat
being too loose, twisted or
incorrectly positioned.

Up to the age of 12 years,
when it is assumed that
children will be able to use
the seatbelts fitted in a car,
the driver is responsible for
ensuring that an appropri¬
ate child restraint is fitted
and that it is being used
correctly.

Steve Huntingford, What
Car? editor, said: “It’s clear
that the overwhelming
majority of drivers are
aware of their responsibili¬
ties when carrying a child
in the car.

“But, unless the child car
seats have Isofix attach¬
ments, there is confusion
over how to correctly fit
them and ensure your

child’s safety.

“At best, drivers could
land themselves with a
£100 fixed penalty notice,
but at worst they are signif¬

icantly increasing the risk
of death or serious injury to
their children.

“It’s a form of Russian
roulette that drivers are

playing,” he added.

Child Seat Safety co¬
director, Julie Dagnall,
added: “The evidence from
this study was that the
overwhelming majority of
drivers were exposing the
children in their cars to sig¬
nificantly increased risk.

“It is important to raise
awareness of this issue
and to offer parents and
other drivers carrying chil¬
dren the correct informa¬
tion and guidance.”

Few of those surveyed
had sought professional
guidance in selecting their
child seats, and fewer still
had retained contact with
the retailers or manufactur¬
ers of their child seats.

Mr Huntingford added:
“Parents and carers often
go to great lengths to
ensure the safety of chil¬
dren in many aspects of
daily life, and it is shocking
that the proportion of
unsafe child restraints in
their cars was so high.”

DEPARTURES
A BLOW TO
BLUES SQUAD

Football

Football round-up
by Brian Jeeves

SOUTHEND United have been
dealt a blow with the news that
eentral defender Adam
Thompson and midfielder Will
Atkinson have parted eompany
with the Roots Hall elub to join
Bury and Mansfield Town
respeetively.

Atkinson, 24, was arguably
Southend’s most improved player
during the last eampaign. He was
reeently seleeted as a part of
Northern Ireland’s squad for their
fortheoming matehes with New
Zealand and Azerbaijan, but joins
Bury on a three-year deal after
making 121 appearanees for the
Blues.

Speaking to the Bury offieial
website about his signing, man¬
ager Lee Clark said: “I have seen
Adam operate at elose quarters
this season and he was very
impressive, and it’s that impres¬
sive form whieh has led to his
eall-up to the Northern Ireland
squad.

“Adam is a fantastie signing for
us. I am thrilled to have signed a
young, talented, international
player who is at the age where we
ean still help him develop and he
ean help us improve.”

Former Hull City and Bradford
City man Atkinson linked up
with Southend in 2103, making
171 appearanees and was a piv¬
otal part of the Blues side that
won promotion to League One
via the play-offs in 2015.

Speaking to the Mansfield
Town offieial website, the 28-
year-old said; “I spoke to the
manager, Steve Evans, and he
really sold it to me.

“He was determined to get me
in, he made me feel really wanted
- that was a big part - and obvi¬
ously I’ve spoken to people and
got adviee and they said the elub
was going plaees and I want to be
a part of that.”

• West Ham United’s sueeess-
ful under-23 side faee a number
of testing pre-season friendlies
ahead of the new Premier League

2 -Division 1 eampaign.

The Hammers youngsters were
promoted to the top-flight fol¬
lowing a dramatie 2-1 play-off
vietory over their Neweastle
United eounterparts at St James’
Park at the start of the month.

Now aeademy direetor Terry
Westley will be looking to ensure
his side get the best possible
preparation ahead of the new sea¬
son.

The Hammers get under way
with a visit to the Hive on
Saturday, July 15 to faee Sky Bet
League two side Barnet (3pm),
before travelling to the Weston
Homes Community Stadium to
take on Colehester United three
days later on July 18 (7.45pm).

West Ham take on National
League side, Dagenham &
Redbridge, at Vietoria Road on
Saturday, July 22 (3pm), before
travelling to Slovakia to take on
Super Liga sides Spartak Tmava
and FC ViOn Zlate Moravee.

Speaking to the Hammers offi¬
eial website, Westley said; “This
group of players is at a level
where they need a pre-season
whieh is akin to that of a
Championship elub.

Vandals strike at Millfield

TWO eharity matehes and all of Aveley and Grays’ pre-season
home games have been eaneelled following damage to the Millfield
ground by vandals.

In a statement on the Millers offieial website, elub seeretary Craig
Johnson ealled on the loeal eommunity for help in routing out those
responsible.

“For that reason, we have
organised matehes against ELL
elubs, as well as a trip to Slovakia
where we will take on two of the
eountry’s top sides.

“The likes of Dan Kemp, who
made his England debut on
Monday evening, Martin
Samuelsen, George Dobson, Toni
Martinez, Mareus Browne and
Josh Cullen, if they are with us,
need to be tested, so we have put
together a pre-season sehedule
that is fit for purpose.”

• Colehester United striker
Chris Porter has parted eompany
with the elub to link up with fel¬
low Sky Bet League Two outfit
Crewe Alexandra.

Porter seored 16 times for the
U’s last season, and made a total
of 91 appearanees for Colehester,
finding the net 30 times during
his time in North Essex.

The 33-year-old will join the
Gresty Road side at the eonelu-
sion of his eurrent eontraet on
July 1.

Meanwhile, Colehester has
announeed that West Ham United
will be sending a team to the
Weston Homes Community
Stadium as part of their pre-sea-
son preparations. The Hammers
visit the U’s on Tuesday, July 18
(7.45pm).

• Dagenham & Redbridge
have bolstered their ranks with
the triple signing of Morgan
Perrier, Daniel Sparkes and Ben
Nunn

Striker Perrier, 22, netted 11
times for Boreham Wood during

the last campaign. He links up
with the Daggers subject to a fee
being agreed by a tribunal.

Previously, the frontman had
spells with Arsenal, Nottingham
Forest, West Bromwich Albion
and Crystal Palace before mov¬
ing into non-league football with
Bishop’s Stortford and Hemel
Hempstead Town.

Sparkes joins the Daggers from
fellow National League outfit
Torquay United. The midfielder
made 36 appearances for the
Gulls during the last campaign,
finding the net six times.

Previously he enjoyed spells
with Histon and Braintree Town,
helping the latter to the National
League play-offs.

This signing comes hot on the
heels of defender Ben Nunn
linking up with the Victoria Road
Club from Boreham Wood.

Like Perrier, Nunn arrives from
Boreham Wood on a two-year
deal, having made 38 appear¬
ances for Boreham Wood during
the last campaign.

The 27-year-old had spells with
Boston United, Rushden &
Diamonds, Cambridge City,
Bishop’s Stortford and
Chelmsford City.

During his five seasons at
Boreham Wood, Nunn made 151
appearances and scored three
times.

Meanwhile, the Victoria Road
side has confirmed that midfield¬
er Scott Heard has left the club
after cancelling his contract by
mutual consent.

HAVE YOU
SEEN THIS.
WOMAN? L

What’s causing your
pain in the BUTT?

Sciatica

1

Sciatica “Si-at-ika” is a group of symptoms involving pain in
the buttock and back of the leg, only usually on one side of
the body. In addition to pain there may be any combination
of pins & needles, numbness, tingling and muscle weakness
in the affected leg or foot. The true meaning of Sciatica is
often misunderstood. The term is merely a group of
symptoms and not a diagnosis. This means that if you have
been told you have Sciatica, you still have not been given a
diagnosis, as the diagnosis is being told what is causing
your Sciatica symptoms. Having a correct diagnosis is
important because the treatment options for the different
causes are very different.

Jon Handley-Collins,
Doctor of Chiropractic

l^r

The main causes of Sciatica are:

• Spinal disc herniation: Some people call this a “slipped
disc” but what actually happens is the fluid like contents
of your spinal disc causes the outer layers of the disc to
bulge out. If this bulge is on to a spinal nerve in your lower
back, it can cause Sciatica.

• Spinal Stenosis: This is where the hole for your spinal
nerve to exit from the spinal canal closes up and puts
pressure on the affected nerve, causing Sciatica.

• Piriformis Syndrome: The piriformis is a muscle in your
buttock. The Sciatic nerve passes very closely to this
muscle and in rare cases passes through the muscle.
When this muscle gets tight it can irritate the Sciatic
nerve, which can cause Sciatica.

To find out whether Chiropractic can help, a Chiropractor will
first conduct a case history and physical exam to narrow a
patient’s symptoms down to find out what's causing
them.This includes neurological, orthopaedic and
Chiropractic examinations.

Then there is a return visit to explain our findings, to tell you
what has been found and what needs to be done to sort it
out. At the Optimum Spine Centre, (based at 1212 London
Road, Leigh on Sea) we are conducting these initial
consultations, including a report of findings for
just £15 (usually £90).

Give the Centre a call today on 01702 710084.

Only a vote for Theresa May’s Conservatives
Will ensure that we take back control

For nearly 20 years I have campaigned for the United Kingdom to leave the
European Union and restore full sovereignty to our Parliament. That focus led me
to join UKIP in which I played a significant role in developing its local election
strategy which resulted in over 50 councillors being elected across Essex.

I have always known James Duddridge was one of the leading MPs supporting the
case for Brexit and I was delighted when we were able to work together on the
Vote Leave campaign last year. James was very involved in the national campaign
but he also gave me his full support in my role as regional director for Vote Leave.
The campaign was also strongly supported by Sir David Amess.

Article 50 has been triggered and the Prime Minister needs our full support so she
has a strong hand to deliver the best outcome for our economy and our country.
Only Theresa May can deliver on Brexit’s 4 core goals:- taking back control of our
borders, our legal system, our finances and our ability to trade freely.

We need the ability to control who enters or re-enters the UK. We need to
prosecute laws that protect our citizens without foreign courts interfering and we
need to be strong against the internal enemies that threaten our way of life. This is
not the time to have a weak and inclusive approach to terrorists or a coalition of
chaos dominated by wanting to hold re runs of the referendums on the EU and UK.
